I think , this year I might be eligible to receive a Winter Fuel Payment according to www. govuk dates .( born before 25th Sept 1957)But according to my Scottish Power advisory leaflet the qualifying date is born before 26th Sept 1955 . If I qualify it should come through automatically ?
Then there's the Warm Discount Scheme which appears to come from your supplier but you have to be in receipt of some benefits - you have to apply for this ? Am I correct ? smile

On the WFP yes, it comes through automatically.

Thank you for making me think about it - I went to the gov site and it sounds like I'll be getting more than I thought, if I've read it right.

You qualify if you were born before 25 September 1957.

www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment

You should get a letter from DWP tellng you about it. It’s usually paid in November or December straight to the bank account where your receive your state pension.

The Warm Home Discount Scheme for winter 2023 to 2024 opens on 16 October 2023. The government information page has not yet been updated but Money Saving Expert issued this yesterday:

www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/warm-home-discount/#ScottishWHD

Ignore the Scottish tag in the title. The scheme applies in England and Wales too but it works differently in Scotland. Neither Scottish Power not EoN are open yet for applications but other suppliers are.

Check this page carefully. If eligible, you may get it automatically but you may need to apply.

polnan Sat 14-Oct-23 11:33:10

I don`t think the Government makes this easy to understand.

farview Sat 14-Oct-23 11:53:36

I don’t know if this may help.

I was born 15 days too late grrrrrrr!

Georgesgran Sat 14-Oct-23 12:41:49

The dates to benefit change every year.
This year the payment is £500 per household if one resident was born between ‘43 and ‘57.
Before ‘43 it’s £600. It’s automatically paid (into the account where DWP pays your pension) usually Nov/Dec.

Criteria for the Warm Home Discount has changed - I know DD2 in receipt of DLA no longer qualifies.

From the website:-

Maria59 Sat 14-Oct-23 16:05:48

tiredoldwoman my understanding is you need to apply for your first WFP it is then paid automatically in future years

farview Sat 14-Oct-23 16:30:13

Maria59..we never applied..just received it..

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 14-Oct-23 17:04:38

It’s paid automatically. You don’t have to apply.

Has anyone seen the vitriol on mumsnet about pensioners being paid lots of money for heating that they don't need when they're struggling with inflation etc? It's quite upsetting given that I only became a home owner because I lived on fresh air and wore second hand clothes. Ran old cars and didn't take the children abroad until they were in their mid teens. And we ate out once a year as a special treat paid for by a family friend who didn't have children.

Mojack26 Sat 14-Oct-23 20:48:06

I only started getting it last year... born October '55 and I'm in Scotland. My friend got it year before as she was born June '55 if this helps

Ziplok Sat 14-Oct-23 21:04:23

My advice Maybe79 is don’t let what is said on mumsnet upset you. You’re entitled to that payment, you (and or your DH) have contributed enough in taxes over the years, so don’t worry. Their day will come if they’re lucky, and, if they’ve been sensible, will have ensured they have a reasonable pension to live on when their time comes - goodness, we’ve been warned enough for years that the state pension on its own is not enough to live on and should make other plans where possible.

Ziplok Sat 14-Oct-23 21:04:50

Maybe70, sorry, not 79.

Had my letter yesterday from DWP saying I was entitled to the warm home discount £150. Just had email from Eon it's been added to my account today.

BlueBelle Tue 17-Oct-23 16:13:47

My friend says she’s had a letter and getting £600 why ? She’s on her own and not on benefits. Don’t understand at all

bikergran Tue 17-Oct-23 16:20:28

I got my winter fuel allowance for first time last year when I was 67, I missed out the year before.

But I do not get the Warm front grant now that I receive the winter fuel payment if that is any help

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 17-Oct-23 16:28:45

The payment is per household BlueBelle. If the household contains an eligible couple they get half each, a single eligible occupier gets it all. Your friend must have been born after Sept 1943 to be getting £600 rather than £500.

Aldom Tue 17-Oct-23 16:39:30

I receive £600 this year because I was born on or before 24th September 1943. Single occupancy household.

Aldom Tue 17-Oct-23 16:43:46

My letter also explains that my £600 also includes extra money from the government to help with the cost of living. This extra money is known as a Pensioner Cost of Living Payment.

BlueBelle Tue 17-Oct-23 16:54:07

Thanks GSM yes I think she’s a couple of years older than me so that would be it
Is the warm front now only for people on benefits I used to get it but I m not on benefits so I think things must have changed
