I've been reminded that over a month ago I was tentatively suggesting doing something in Edinburgh on Burns Night - or rather Burns Lunchtime, as that gives people longer to get home afterwards.

I think we had four possible expressions of interest at that time - Gally, Marelli, Baubles and me. Anyone else going to join us?

And do we want to have a toast to His Nibs, and to The Lasses and someone reciting the Ode to a Haggis, or just a plate of haggis, neeps and chappit tatties and constant conversation?

The receptionist at the venue I had in mind originally sounded distinctly lukewarm when I did a very preliminary recce - could be because I had no idea of numbers or date or anything. If I get it a bit more concrete I will go back.

Enjoy your Burns celebration grans wish I could be with you, but looking at the snow - er - maybe not! Take care and keep warm with a few wee drams grin

Happy Burns day!

soop Fri 25-Jan-13 14:34:24

HAPPY, happy, happy Burns day to one and all. Bags sent a text as she was travelling on the train. My consellation prize [for being unable to join the high-jinx] was to watch a cliff-hanger of a four hour match between Andy and Roger. When "our man" won...out came the dram. Oooh, it was lovely. grin
PS...much rain but no snow...

Gally Fri 25-Jan-13 15:37:34

Hope you've all had a lovely afternoon. Thought about you all tucking in while we were on the Eurostar whizzing through France. Just arrived in Paris and settled into our lovely rooms. It's bitterly cold but, hey, we're going to have great time grin

Grannylin Fri 25-Jan-13 15:39:58

Just back from Elegran's after having had a really lovely afternoon with lots of chat and laughter and food! Elegran had made us all so welcome and worked so hard to make Burns Day special for us. Thank you Elegran, and everyone else who joined us - Glass, Gillybob, Bags, Marsco (Lurkio), baubles, Granny23, Elizabeth1. What a fine bunch of women. flowers.

whenim64 Fri 25-Jan-13 18:32:09

Oh, that sounds absolutely lovely! Good to hear you've had a happy time smile

Granny23 Fri 25-Jan-13 18:33:42

I'd like to second everything Marelli said especially the thanks to Elegran for sharing her lovely house with us (and the house, within a house, within a housewink.

I got home just before 6, No snow in Edinburgh, quite a lot near Falkirk and none on Clackmannanshire Bridge - but then - the bypass was closed (I presume an accident) and I was directed uphill on a bendy country road which got worse and worse, over a foot of fresh snow, car skiting all over the place but thankfully nothing coming the other way. Anyway, I made it down hill and home OK through heavy rain. Felt quite proud of myself but Himself remarked how lucky I was that there was no snow. [humph] Good job he doesn't know the half of it grin

You missed a house, Granny23. It is a house within a house within a house within a house.

I've only just turned on the laptop to see what everyone else has been up to. It was so lovely to see everyone, and now I have enough food in the house to withstand a siege. (That is the house within which is a house, within which is a house, within which is a house.) You all brought so much with you. I just wish more people could have been there to help eat it all up.

Soop, we spoke about you (all nice things) so you were there in spirit. Everyone else who could not come, we will see you at the next meet-up. When will it be? Valentine's day? Easter?

baubles Fri 25-Jan-13 20:01:42

Thanks again Elegran for your wonderful hospitality. It was such a pity that the Fifers and G23 had to take their leave a wee bit earlier than planned. How lovely it was to meet up with such fabulous wimmen again and to meet others for the first time.

Hope Glass Gillybob and Bags got home without incident.

Just settled down at home! Thank you for inviting us all, elegran. It was lovely smile flowers

I was sitting with an ex principal of Univ Strathclyde and a man on his way to pipe at a Burns Supper on the train back from Edinburgh. Very interesting talk about bagpipes. Fun journey.

Then train home from Glasgow and Mr Bags waited for me at the station because he knows how scared I am of driving in snow. That was nice. Meanwhile phoned Minibags to check she was OK. Certainly – she was making snowmen and igloos in the garden with pals.

Gransnet Burns' Birthday meet up was super and all is well. Thank you all for a lovely time.

Elegran Fri 25-Jan-13 20:28:27

Thank you all for braving the elements to come - and for the return journeys you have done too, when it was all over. I just had to stay here in the warm eating traybake.
