Just how arrogant are the anti-EU Conservatives?

Conservatives for Britain - that's what the group of MPs are calling themselves. They may as well have called themselves the "We are the only ones who are right" party. I am sure that all Conservatives, indeed all politicians basically want the best for Britain they just disagree on the way to get it.

Conservatives for Britain seems to me rather like the BNP taking ownership of the union flag as if they are the only ones who really support Britain. It also reminds me of those Ukippers (on other forums) talking about coming out of the EU and saying such things as "every sane person would agree" or anyone who wants the best for the UK would agree" as if they have been told by God that this is what we need to do. Such arrogance makes me so angry and I don't get angry often angry

Gracesgran There are lots of ordinary people who support Conservatives for Britain, who do not want to remain in the EU. I am just voicing my views.

If by a slim chance Jeremy Corbyn, a far left MP became leader of the Labour Party, I personally do not think he would have a chance in hell of winning an election.

Perhaps the far left on here could be a bit more tolerant of those on the right.

They will choose Andy Burnham.

grannyonce Fri 19-Jun-15 16:30:25

regardless of who they elect
none of them (any politicians) can hold a candle to Tony Benn who I greatly admired
his views on the EU : -

"My view of the EU has always been not that I am hostile to foreigners but I am in favour of democracy. I think they are building an empire and want us to be part of that empire, and I don't want that."

"When I saw how the European Union was developing, it was very obvious what they had in mind was not democratic. In Britain, you vote for a government so the government has to listen to you, and if you don't like it you can change it."

Ana Fri 19-Jun-15 16:33:32

Well said that man!

durhamjen Fri 19-Jun-15 17:11:34

But magpie, you do not want the left to win an election. Therefore you should hope that Corbyn is voted in.

Here's an answer to the problem of refugees, too.

Such a clever trick.

soontobe Fri 19-Jun-15 17:46:10

I find it strange that any posters on here want Corbyn to get voted in.

durhamjen Fri 19-Jun-15 17:48:16

Terribull, this is how we treat asylum seekers in this country.

durhamjen Fri 19-Jun-15 17:49:26

Why do you find it strange, soon?
Corbyn is a proper socialist, not like the others. He was also a good friend of Tony Benn's.

soontobe Fri 19-Jun-15 17:49:52

It reminds me of the thread where voting tactically was not seen as a good idea.

durhamjen Fri 19-Jun-15 17:50:04

The Tories want Corbyn to get in, as he is the candidate they fear the least.

soontobe Fri 19-Jun-15 17:54:32

The bigger picture doesnt matter much?

durhamjen Fri 19-Jun-15 18:05:45

What do you mean, soon? Whose bigger picture?
The Tories told all sorts of lies to get in. They thought they would be okay because there would be a coalition. Now they have found out their plans are unravelling fast. They all have to keep uttering the words "long term economic plan", but they do not have one.

Ana Fri 19-Jun-15 18:09:16

Labour told all sorts of lies but still didn't get in! Funny old world, that of politics! grin

soontobe Fri 19-Jun-15 18:17:17

I meant the bigger picture of if Corbyn gets elected, that probably means that Labour wont get back in power for a longer period of time. But that doesnt seem to matter to a lot of people.

loopylou Fri 19-Jun-15 18:22:37

I've long since come to the conclusion all politicians are 'economical with the truth' in order to achieve what they want, regardless of which party.
So nothing's new in politics.
It just depends on who's the most plausible at any one moment in time.

magpie123 Fri 19-Jun-15 18:33:37

Hi durhamjen surely the Labour Party want to elect a leader who could win the next General Election. Liz Kendall in my opinion would be their best bet.

durhamjen Fri 19-Jun-15 18:37:06

Jeremy Corbyn is the only one standing against austerity.
That's the bigger picture for me.

soontobe Fri 19-Jun-15 18:45:13

You would think so magpie123, but it is not the case.

So I dont think they can then complain when the party they want does not win an election. But they will.

magpie123 Fri 19-Jun-15 18:51:41

But if he has no hope of ever winning an election even if he won the vote for leader of the Labour Party, you are not looking at the bigger picture are you.

magpie123 Fri 19-Jun-15 19:08:17

Hi soontobe I don't think they will vote for Jeremy Corbyn he's too far left, I personally think Liz Kendall would be their best bet. Personally I feel that I could never vote for any party only the Conservatives, although I did tactically vote UKIP in the last election. The next general election is another 5 years away, so who knows how I will think and vote then, it depends if the next 5 years have been kind to me and my family.

grannyonce Fri 19-Jun-15 19:30:11

DJ
the definition of austerity (such an emotive word to bandy about )

A state of reduced spending and increased frugality in the financial sector. Austerity measures generally refer to the measures taken by governments to reduce expenditures in an attempt to shrink their growing budget deficits.

so you and Jeremy Corbyn are against austerity
what do you propose to balance the books and shrink the deficit
how would labour under Corbyn achieve it? hmm

loopylou Fri 19-Jun-15 19:34:30

I am confused!
DJ therefore is apparently vehemently anti-financiers and the financial sector but now doesn't want austerity measures against the financiers and financial sector?

I'm lost.........

whitewave Fri 19-Jun-15 19:52:05

At the moment, as a Labour Party member I am afraid I am underwhelmed by all the candidates.

Ana Fri 19-Jun-15 20:06:51

dj is primarily anti-Tory. Anything that can be used against them will be utilised and exploited! grin

loopylou Fri 19-Jun-15 20:11:40

QED Ana grin along with umpteen links. If I had the inclination (and I definitely don't!) I'd spend time googling counter-arguments sad
