Anyone else seriously concerned at the rise of Trump in the USA? It seems that the more extreme, the more crazy, the more fascist he and his 'solutions' become- the more his ratings go up. You would have thought that people would begin to think he is a loose and dangerous canon- but no- they love him all the more.

My mother was studying German at Munich University in 1933- and this is exactly what she described.

And we can't just say 'this is the USA' and it has little to do with us. We have no vote of course- but we certainly live in the same crazy world.

Monthy Python- they knew how to recognize a witch- but how on earth do you recognize a 'Muslim' ???

Elegran Thu 10-Dec-15 11:41:54

That clock is one from a book of fairy-tales, which is exactly where his insular mind is, keeping out the great big ogre, which can be recognised and defeated at once by all fairy-tale all-american heroes.

Some people want to ban Trump from coming into the UK because Trump wants to ban Muslims from coming into the USA? Er, there is something not right about this. I don't agree with anything Trump says so I am hardly going to support a ban on freedom of speech or movement.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 10-Dec-15 12:49:11

I agree the petition is more about a gesture, but we have banned other public figures from the UK for the same sort of speech.

The Home Office has powers to ban individuals from overseas coming to the UK under the '^unacceptable behaviours or extremism exclusion policy^'. Last year Home Secretary Theresa May said she had excluded hundreds of people because she considers their presence is "^not conducive to the public good or if their exclusion is justified on public policy grounds^".

People banned from entering the UK under the exclusion policy in the last few years include leaders of the Westboro Baptist Church, Islamist preachers and Ku Klux Klan officials, and two anti-Muslim bloggers.

The part of the petition that I think is most relevant is -

If the United Kingdom is to continue applying the 'unacceptable behaviour' criteria to those who wish to enter its borders, it must be fairly applied to the rich as well as poor, and the weak as well as powerful.

Free speech in the UK comes with a number of exceptions including threatening, abusive or insulting words or behavior intending or likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress or cause a breach of the peace (which has been used to prohibit racist speech).

Of course, this is all hypothetical because who knows when Trump will be returning to the UK, but the petition will send him a message.

durhamjen Thu 10-Dec-15 13:43:46

If Trump were a muslim and said the same about Christians, he would be banned.
Theresa May has said that she does not comment on specific cases. What rubbish. Those who get banned are always individual cases.

durhamjen Thu 10-Dec-15 13:44:58

It's a very good gesture, Wilma, as is taking away his degree by a Scottish university.
Nearly 425,000 signatures now.

Anniebach Thu 10-Dec-15 13:52:04

Do we not demand all who preach hatred are banned from this country ? Trump is no different to others

granjura Thu 10-Dec-15 13:58:49

Sometimes 'gestures' get noticed- it would be great if the petition gets more than 1/2 million votes, really.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 10-Dec-15 14:44:52

He has also been dropped as a business ambassador for Scotland. He has responded by saying

"The UK politicians should be thanking me."

Then he tweeted "The United Kingdom is trying hard to disguise their massive Muslim problem. Everybody is wise to what is happening. Very sad. Be honest."

He has responded with this article in the local Aberdeen Press and Journal

Donald Trump's response

In the interest of fairness there's now a petition opposing Trump being banned from the UK HERE .

granjura Thu 10-Dec-15 15:19:06

Best Tweet of the day from Donald. The lovely and 'respected' (what!?!) Katie Hopkins seems to be his only friend today:

Thank you to respected columnist Katie Hopkins of Daily Mail.com for her powerful writing on the U.K.'s Muslim problems.

gillybob Thu 10-Dec-15 15:21:14

There is no doubt that Trump has a large following in the USA. What makes sense to me is that we should be looking at how/why someone like him should represent the views of so many people. What went wrong?

There are apparently 5 UK police officers who have come forward to say that he is right and that there are places in the UK that they are frightened to police and will not even go into those areas wearing a police uniform. Now I have no idea whether this is fact or fiction but if it is true then we have a much more serious problem than we realise.

granjura Thu 10-Dec-15 15:42:53

Where we used to live, there were a couple of infamous estates where OH would hesitate to visit at night without protection. Not a brown or black face in those 2 estates - they wouldn't have survived. He on the other hand happily go alone in the middle of the night to those areas with a big ethnic mix- where there was prostitution and drug-selling going on- but little violence.

Anya Thu 10-Dec-15 16:27:14

The Twitter community had responded by mocking him, according to todays papers.

"One user captioned a picture of the queen wearing her headscarf with 'Britain so radicalised that the Queen now wears a hijab'.

Another captioned Jeremy Corbyn's picture with 'The capital is full of dangerous bearded radicals'

granjura Thu 10-Dec-15 17:09:38

The sheer stupidity of his proposals certainly has brought out the best of British Humour- hurrah.

Katie Hopkins has tweeted that she would go and live in the USA if he won- it almost makes you wish he would, doesn't it ;)

gillybob Thu 10-Dec-15 17:16:32

Are they really mocking him though Anya I'm not so sure. hmm

durhamjen Thu 10-Dec-15 19:26:06

458,000 signatures to keep him out. 20,000 to let him come in. Keeping him out still getting 7000+ an hour.
Middle east shops are now banning his goods for sale.
The only reason he has managed to get where he is is because of the money he has. His ex-partner has said that muslims put hundreds of billions of dollars into creating jobs in America. They are likely to invest it elsewhere.
Well done, Trump.
Who do you think the British government will want to appease, Trump or lots of muslims with money?

granjura Thu 10-Dec-15 19:33:20

78.000 signatures got him stripped of his Honorary Scottish Degree today. Won't make much difference to the reality out there- but it feels good all the same. Hurrah.

durhamjen Thu 10-Dec-15 20:53:58

He has also been stripped of his position as a business ambassador for Scotland by Nicola Sturgeon, as he was no longer thought to be fit to be a business ambassador for Scotland. His membership has been withdrawn with immediate effect.
At least the Scottish Assembly has some sense of decency.

Ana Thu 10-Dec-15 20:56:04

Wilma informed us of that earlier, thank you durhamjen. Do keep up!

Anniebach Thu 10-Dec-15 21:04:41

Good for Nicola Sturgeon, I agree Jen a sense if decency

Ana Thu 10-Dec-15 21:06:49

Oh, have you only just caught up as well, Annie? tchgrin

rosequartz Thu 10-Dec-15 21:16:06

Some Trumpisms (or Trumpetts)

Donald Trump has said he will “postpone” a trip to Israel and a meeting with the country’s prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, until “after I become president of the US”
"I am the least racist person that you have ever met"
“You know, it really doesn’t matter what the media write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.”
“One of the key problems today is that politics is such a disgrace. Good people don’t go into government.”

Is he now 'the front-runner' for the nomination?

To quote one American and hope the others come to their senses: 'You cannot be serious'!!

soontobe Thu 10-Dec-15 21:28:36

The reason he and Ben Carson are topping the polls is down to who they are not, not so much who they are.
They are not establishment. They are not Washington.

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 10-Dec-15 21:31:28

To me his article above responding to being stripped of his honorary degree and being dropped as a business ambassador for Scotland speaks volumes about the man.

He clearly thinks spending his money in Scotland gives him the right to be above others in some way. He rode rough shod in Aberdeen and I have no doubt in my mind he used his money to get planning permission for his projects.

I don't know about the policemen who came forward to say they agree with Trump. But as long as I can remember there's been inner city areas where the police are regarded as the enemy by certain groups in those communities. Let's face it, when was the last time you saw a police officer walking the streets alone? For years now police officers have travelled in pairs and in cars. Every officer lost in the line of duty is a tragedy and thankfully it is a rare occurrence. We've had Police Community Support Officers (PCSO) patrolling our streets in England and Wales since 2002 and none have been killed on duty. None of this happened because of radicalisation.

There's a world of difference between the situation we recognise and Trump's statement that parts of London are so radicalised that police fear for their lives.

Anniebach Thu 10-Dec-15 22:10:54

So easy for any paper to quote unnamed sources , I am sure police officers are more fearful now , many members of the public are too , but police have always known there is a risk to their lives, it's part of the job , shouldn't be so but sadly it is so

Greenockgran Thu 10-Dec-15 22:20:16

I know many people are afraid to voice their opinions, and he just came right out and said it. Those who wish to ban his point of view, are forgetting the right of freedom of speech that my father fought for.
