The one indisputable FACT in this referendum debate

Like many of us, I prefer to deal in facts, not surmise, assumptions, or what might be, or might not happen. The truth is that neither side have a clear idea of what leaving or remaining in the EU might entail, except for one clear fact.

This is, that if we remain, we will continue to have no control over numbers of immigrants from the EU, entering the country.

We all agree that immigration is a Good Thing, but uncontrollable immigration is another issue completely.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 16:30:58

Don't know anya but good to know the immigrants haven't had any effect.

Anya Wed 15-Jun-16 16:38:24

OK ...this thread has gone the way of all political threads on GN with the 'usual suspects' using their usual tactics.

I don't have to outline them as everyone else knows exactly what I mean.

Another one bites the dust.

Anya Wed 15-Jun-16 16:41:27

I don't count you in with the 'usual suspects' WW which was why I was surprised to see your silly post. To reply to your last point..most immigrants are coming to work.

There are jobs available as they have proved.

Anya Wed 15-Jun-16 16:42:09

On that note roastchicken

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 16:43:24

I couldn't resist it anya?

Sterling has lost 3% of its value over the past 5 days. Quite a large drop, due to Brexit fear. This will have an effect on prices like imports like food, fuel etc They will rise.

House builders - growth falls due to fears of Brexit.

These are FACTS and not speculation.

Another FACT - immigration has had no effect on unemployment

durhamjen Wed 15-Jun-16 17:00:50

Anyone else watching the debate on the economic benefits of EU membership on 131 now?

This is an excellent article about immigration.

www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2016/06/15/what-are-we-to-do-about-immigration/

I feel sorry for anyone at the moment who has to interview foreigners looking for work in this country.

durhamjen Wed 15-Jun-16 17:01:48

It will have a big effect on our pensions as well, whitewave.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 17:03:29

Just switched over.

The value of the pound could go up again in a few days time. There is going to be uncertainty either way, which is what markets dont like.
I suspect it is going to take a few weeks for things to be calmer.

The pound going down does have benefits as well, particularly for exports.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 17:10:27

So never mind the poor who have to cope with rising prices to basics, as long as our exports are buoyant that's OK?

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 17:11:38

At least the so called project fear by the remain camp is beginning to be correct, so not fear it is in fact - FACT

obieone Wed 15-Jun-16 17:16:52

Against which currency whitewave?
Only the Euro. Or others?

My motto on GN is that someone tries to derail a thread by sniping then ignore them and move on.
Lots of conversations over the last couple of days.
The woman who said the EU was against her Christian principles confused
The woman who works in a hospital who said EU staff upset at the hostility of the campaign and planning to go home if there is a Leave vote.
The union rep who said that so many people seem focussed only on immigration to the exclusion of other issues.
I'm organising an event to publicise my concerns about women's rights in work, which are likely to be compromised if we leave.
Patel is already on record as saying she'd like to cut the burdensome red tape of employment rights and "help businesses create jobs".
The equation here is that you give your workers less holiday, pay temps and part-timers less, cut maternity leave entitlement and ditch the working time directive so that people can be pressured to work very long hours without entitlement to breaks etc. All of these would of course reduce staff costs and increase profit.
Of course many employers would continue to treat their staff fairly. But some would not. Would their profit be re-invested to create more exploitative jobs? Possibly. Or it might be just taken as increased profit and invested in holiday homes and yachts in sunny climes.
If there is a Leave vote and the likes of Johnson/Gove/Patel end up running the country they will not have to call a general election for 4 more years and could - no the WOULD - do incalculable damage to working rights in this country.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 17:18:02

Of course the wealthy will be speculating like mad on sterling and making a killing. Sod the poor they are deserving it.

whitewave Wed 15-Jun-16 17:19:05

All currencies the dollar in particular

varian Wed 15-Jun-16 17:19:26

The value of the pound has a huge effect on the prosperity of this country. The only way we can prevent it from falling further is to vote REMAIN.

obieone Wed 15-Jun-16 17:19:27

Even the poor, especially the poor, very much need a healthy economy. They rely on the government very much so. Much more than others in the economy.

obieone Wed 15-Jun-16 17:20:36

What is your source please whitewave

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 15-Jun-16 17:21:05
