.... almost want the other side to win, simply because the follow up to the result would be so much more interesting? Yes, I know that is completely irresponsible. hmm

rubylady Fri 24-Jun-16 04:25:49

This poor guy on tele for IN looks really deflated, poor chap.

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 04:32:39

Labour have flipped flopped between saying sorry for the high level of immigration under it's watch to Corbyn saying he is happy for unlimited immigration. The working class have to live with the consequence and they have not been heard. They have just been called racist by the party they thought would understand the issues they experience because of it.

Employment has been boosted but take just one thing Corbyn has been keen to mention, The Posted Workers Directive, produced by the EU but works against countries such as the UK who pay higher wages than other countries, particularly the Eastern European countries. Corbyn says we must work from within to get rid of it, it has already being revised! The point however is neither Labour nor Tory governments could do a thing about it, their hands were tied.

It doesn't matter which party had been in power it is the fact the EU has too much control and people have voiced that opinion in the referendum. It is still close to call although I think they will call it soon for Leave. Believe it or not I reluctantly voted remain today , I always said I was head in, heart out and head won today.

How will Brexit help, God knows and I am as concerned as anybody. It could go either way and there will no doubt be
difficult times ahead but democracy has been exercised and we have to accept that.

So be careful what you wish for jinglebells. Looks like we will be leaving the eu. Oh dear......

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 04:33:32

Well, I came to bed 45 minutes ago, but couldn't sleep, so am watching on my iPad as the results roll in. Might as well have stayed downstairs with the TV. Can't leave it now though.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:38:27

Has anyone been up all night? I've been up since about 1.30. Had about 3 hrs sleep.

rubylady Fri 24-Jun-16 04:40:13

We're leaving!

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 04:41:21

Estimated 73% turn out , higher than I thought it would be.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:42:26

Yes pogs of course the result will be accepted, but I am so worried what's ahead. Not just now but in the years. I hope and pray that history doesn't show a steady decline as I am so fearful it may. The sunny uplands are by no means certain.
When the lines of Farage can claim victory I shake

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 04:42:52

I've been up all night, WhitehaveN. I said I wouldn't, but it's had a horrible fascination for me.

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 04:43:51

whitewave The exhaustion's set in!

obieone Fri 24-Jun-16 04:44:56

Contrary to what a lot of people seem to think of me on gransnet, in some ways I am far from living in a bubble.

10 miles to the left of whre I live, there are many expensive, 4 million type houses.
If I go 10 miles to the north or east of where I live, lets just say it is not like that!

If I go 10 miles south, I would say that the people are "ordinary"?

I regularly go, socialise, shop etc in all of these areas.

POGS is right. Labour is in the London bubble. It needs to wake up.

Where I dont probably agree with POGS, is that I dont think Corbyn has done too badly? He was a bit between a rock and a hard place. I dont really think his heart is in Europe really, and I would guess or like to guess that he has been feeling a bit disloyal to the grass roots that voted him in.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:47:08

B of E will probably have to take emergency measures.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 04:48:33

Please listen carefully! I AM NOT A LABOUR SUPPORTER!! I think the fact that the party is so weak is a factor, but not the only one. Liverpool and Manchester, for example, are solidly working class Labour, but voted Remain.

Please don't turn this into an anti-Labour Party rant.

The pound has fallen to its lowest level since 1985, which will have repercussions for interest rates and public debt - just as the 'experts' predicted.

The EU has far less control than people seem to believe and I wish more than anybody else that people understood more about the EU and how it works. People obviously have an opinion, but it's just not based on fact.

I just don't know where the UK is heading now and I'm genuinely distressed and fearful for the future of my country. I think there are some dark and gloomy days/years ahead.

Maggiemaybe Fri 24-Jun-16 04:49:09

Yep. I'm off to bed now. No more to see here sad

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 04:50:28

@ww

Yes, it will. Glad I wasn't intending to go abroad this Summer.

My daughter has a Euro bank account - she's going to be quids in - I think this will be a case of Mum sponging off daughter.

merlotgran Fri 24-Jun-16 04:50:59

I can't believe we stayed up all night. DH is now cooking breakfast. The dogs and cat think we've gone mad.

I also can't believe the result!!

WOW!!

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 04:53:26

OMG! Even Birmingham voted Leave. That's it then!

POGS Fri 24-Jun-16 04:53:29

DD

I have been answering questions asked of me , including your own.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 04:58:04

POGS

OK! I have always understood people's concerns, but I've also been saddened by the amount of rubbish people have been fed about the EU. I wouldn't have minded so much, if the decision had been based on rational arguments, but so much of it has been myth. I still don't understand what people think they're going to gain, apart from getting one over the so-called elite.

I am genuinely upset by it all.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 04:58:06

So now can Brexit deliver?

Primarily less immigration.
Much more money for NHS
Funding for all areas at the moment funded by EU?
Social policy to remain the same?
Environmental policy to stand?
Single market is easy as its gone or will be.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 05:00:37

And me pogs. Someone just said this was a referendum on a major constitutional change.
But decisions have been made on minutiae and myth.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 05:04:33

God this is so serious. It has implications for a generation. In our economy in our relations throughout the world and for the EU and the world economy.

What a bloody cock up

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 05:10:13

This is utterly seismic - I hope the Brexiteers know what they are doing because I'm buggered if I know, or have confidence that they do

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 05:16:14

Yes, it is.

Of course it can't deliver on more money for the NHS. It's just kissed goodbye to that. The pound has fallen by 9% and falling. That means our debt will increase and the government won't be able to borrow money so cheaply. Who was it scare-mongering that we'd end up like Greece?

The Bank of England will have to intervene to prevent sharp inflation. One way or other the 'little people' are going to have to pay for this through higher taxes or more cuts. Thereis LESS money to spend on the NHS, just as predicted. I don't think I will be able to stand Osborne's 'I told you so' smirk.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 05:19:38

If we can convince the markets that alls well than nothing much will happen for a while. But the markets are looking dreadful. Watch as prices begin to rise, inflation takes off. Oh God.
