.... almost want the other side to win, simply because the follow up to the result would be so much more interesting? Yes, I know that is completely irresponsible. hmm

annsixty Fri 24-Jun-16 06:35:29

The old Chinese proverb/curse comes to mind
"May you live in interesting times"

GandTea Fri 24-Jun-16 06:37:19

"Racism was not the only motivation of those who wanted to leave."

The very fact that you accept that racism was part of he motivation of some makes me ashamed.

I suspect that anyone who is not white/British now feels less welcome in this country than they did.

The pound has now dropped to it's lowest 30 years

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 06:39:23

Hope our triple lock holds good, although there is no telling with the Brexit lot what will happen

Luckygirl Fri 24-Jun-16 06:43:32

There were bound to be DM readers who voted with an anti-immigration mindset - there was no way of avoiding that - it is human nature and I deprecate those who were motivated in this way as much as you do GandTea. I do indeed accept that this is what motivated some and I too feel ashamed on that score.

I am just saying that not every out voter should be tarred in the same way and that some thought though the issues in great depth and came to a different conclusion from yours.

My biggest concern, as I said above, is that such a momentous decision should have been decided by such a miniscule majority - this was always going to be the case whichever way the vote went and that to my mind is not democratic at all. Referenda are blunt instruments and have no place in a democracy in my view.

oldgoat Fri 24-Jun-16 06:43:47

So the whole of Scotland voted to stay in. Wonder what the likely consequences will be?

Gracesgran Fri 24-Jun-16 06:44:03

We may loose our triple "A" rating and a comment from the markets "Stirling has burnt to the ground overnight".

varian Fri 24-Jun-16 06:47:26

I have had a terrible sense of foreboding about this and have just woken up to the ghastly news- this is a sad day for the UK, for Europe and or the world.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 06:48:56

We will almost certainly lose the triple A which will make borrowing more expensive.

J52 Fri 24-Jun-16 06:54:51

I feel as if we have just jumped off the edge of a cliff! I cannot guess at what the future holds, but I'm keeping my 'Scottish passport' in a safe place.

A bit surprised by the Welsh result when so much of their modern infrastructure was paid for by the EU.

Anyway the phrase ' be careful what you wish for' comes to mind and I hope that the majority remain happy with their lot. We will see.

Nandalot Fri 24-Jun-16 06:56:32

Varian, I am with you. And what have we gained? The Brexit supporter on the BBC earlier started backtracking already on how long it would take from to make savings from not being in EU and on immigration controls. And Sturgeon is already talking about Scotland's desire to remain in EU. So Great Britain could become just England and Wales.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 06:57:36

Not quite the whole of Scotland wink

Nandalot Fri 24-Jun-16 06:57:51

Apologies for all the errors in typing. Should have proof read.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 07:00:04

What a lot of doomsayers! I feel a sense of excitement about the political future that I haven't felt for a long while. Working class people have refound their voice and used their hard won democratic right. They looked at Greece and Spain and said Sod that!

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:03:12

@thatbags

Try reading the financial pages. We're heading towards the same situation as Spain and Greece.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 07:04:23

Good bags as long as your future doesn't include the likes of Farage.

J52 Fri 24-Jun-16 07:04:44

Quite a few British people have looked at Greece and Spain and said 'that looks nice I'll go and live there' I wonder what will happen to them and their pensions now?

annsixty Fri 24-Jun-16 07:05:22

God help us then.

Ceesnan Fri 24-Jun-16 07:07:00

Well I woke up to the news and am delighted. Sorry if that upsets those of you who voted to remain, but let's face it, if you had won you would feel like cheering from the rooftops too smile

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:10:36

So what advantages do you expect to see, Ceesnan?

petra Fri 24-Jun-16 07:13:09

GandTea My 2 West Indian friends voted to leave. They are more patriotic than me.

whitewave Fri 24-Jun-16 07:13:23

Your celebrations should be tempered a tad ceesnan until we can be certain that our economy can be stabilised, because if not the vast majority who votedBrexit will be hit, by job losses on an industrial scale, expensive debt and no money for the NHS.

thatbags Fri 24-Jun-16 07:18:08

Don't worry, ww, my future is solid progressive left like Engels and Tony Benn.

"In the original The Condition of the Working Class in England, written in 1845, Friedrich Engels argued that the industrial revolution, which had enriched the owners of capital, had done nothing for the people who lived and worked in the industrial cities. The same message is coming back from the post-industrial revolution, and Labour has to find a way to respond."

Philip Collins in The Times today.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:19:25

Ceesnan, I wouldn't have been cheering from the rooftops. I would, however, have felt very relieved and would have continued to fight inequality, tax dodges, cuts to public services, etc in any way I can.

The poorest, most vulnerable and disenchanted have just shot themselves in the foot. Meanwhile, the much despised fat cats will still continue to make money.

daphnedill Fri 24-Jun-16 07:20:49

We've moved on a little since 1845! Engels' vision didn't work out too well!

grannyactivist Fri 24-Jun-16 07:21:40

Oh dear. sad
