Farage is standing down as leader of UKIP

nanakate Tue 05-Jul-16 16:28:54

Well said Bluecat. Project Fear wasn't Project Fear at all, but a realistic assessment of what the likely impact would be. And we are seeing it happen already.

HootyMcOwlface Tue 05-Jul-16 16:33:40

All MEPs (and MPs come to that) should have to clock in and clock out and be present and awake for all debates etc. Otherwise they should get nowt. Bloody scroungers.

petra Tue 05-Jul-16 16:42:31

Could be more tears on the way. Hungary are going to have a referendum on the 2nd October to decide whether ( or not) they take their quota of migrants.
Their president said " The eu has no right to redraw Europes cultural and religious identity"
I think I know which way this vote is going to go.

hopeful1 Tue 05-Jul-16 16:44:34

Oops,I must have missed that bit daphnedill, i went to work and the news changed! I can't keep up.

suzied Tue 05-Jul-16 16:56:38

He kept quiet about some of the other UKIP proposals such as bringing back smoking in pubs and loosening up gun controls.

Kempsy3 Tue 05-Jul-16 17:09:16

I and many of my colleagues who voted for Brexit had been hoping to leave the EU for many years. We are all educated adults who didn't need anyone to tell us how to vote. I can't understand how the "remainers" are so bitter. Could it be because they lost?
I happen to like Farage. He did what he had to do, and what he does with the rest of his life is entirely up to him. I wish him good luck as I do all the campaigners, Cameron included.
Let's move away from personal insults, surely we Gransnets are above that.

Great Britain is a great Country and will continue to be great.

Shelagh6 Tue 05-Jul-16 17:10:08

The country has grumbled about the EU for years - he knows what goes on there - everyone wanted a referendum - I can only say 'be careful what you wish for' and now thanks to Farage, we got one and the majority got 'leave' - we are a democracy so 'get on with it' - the British are always moaning!

suzied Tue 05-Jul-16 17:21:22

I am not bitter, but angry and anxious. I am not going to get on with it but continue to express my displeasure at the mess our politicians have got us in. For the first time in my life I am ashamed to be British. It's not being a bad loser, 75% people in my area voted to remain as did 48% nationally not exactly a landslide victory.

daphnedill Tue 05-Jul-16 17:31:13

No, Shelagh, I won't get on with it.

If Leavers can honestly say that they voted Leave, despite knowing that:

- the £350,000 a day promise to the NHS was rubbish
- Turkey is unlikely to join the EU for decades
- immigration is unlikely to decrease significantly
- it is highly likely that prices will rise and there will be less money for investment
- that there are no guarantees for EU citizens living in the UK or expats
- the pound was likely to fall (it has) so expats will be considerably worse off
- areas such as Cornwall and Wales would lose billions in development funding
- that British universities and research centres will lose billions
- that opportunities for young people to study abroad will be reduced
- that there is and never has been a plan for the UK outside the UK
- that negotiations will cost billions and 'red tape' will be increased

etc etc etc

...and are prepared to take responsibilty for their vote, I will consider moving on.

Jane10 Tue 05-Jul-16 18:10:17

Well said daphnedil!

daphnedill Tue 05-Jul-16 18:13:18

PS. I meant 'plan for the UK outside the EU'

whitewave Tue 05-Jul-16 18:15:13

smile daph.

JessM Tue 05-Jul-16 18:21:48

Bags I have never been "hysterical" in my life and I suggest you reflect for a moment on the implications of your terminology.
1. It is a description of behaviour that is rarely if ever used in relation to male behaviour. So therefore it is sexist.
2. It's origins in the not too distant past were that medical men were convinced that female behaviour and emotions that they found unacceptable, worrying or weird were caused by the uterus breaking loose inside the body and affecting the emotions.
They sometimes went on to try to "cure" this behaviour they labelled as "hysteria" by removing the uterus.
Graphic wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_hysteria
So another reason why bandying this term about is offensive is that many women have been abused in its name.
If you genuinely can't understand this line of argument, and you can't understand why anyone would find that UKIP's "keep the foreigners out" manifesto racist and offensive, then maybe someone can explain it to you face to face.

Anya Tue 05-Jul-16 18:22:42

It is exactly about being bad losers and predicting doom and gloom and talkimg this country down. I think some of those above would actually be pleased if this country was brought to its knees, just so they can say they were correct.

As an example, Jobs might be at risk? Guesswork.

Fact today Jaguar Landrover in Coventry has just announced it is creating 250 new jobs.

whitewave Tue 05-Jul-16 18:27:35

We should have never got to this disastrous position anya

suzied Tue 05-Jul-16 18:37:11

No it's not about being bad losers, in a general election I might be disappointed about whichever way it went if it wasn't my choice, but I would get on with it in that situation. This is not the same -we are the laughing stock of the world, we haven't got a government or opposition, the main leaders in the appalling campaign have chucked in the towel, we can't let the extremists emerge.

daphnedill Tue 05-Jul-16 18:37:25

No, Anya, it is not about being a bad loser. This wasn't a game of tiddlywinks or Strictly. This was about something that many people cared very much about and knowing that about a third of the country was prepared to take a leap into the dark to make this country a less inclusive and more inward-looking place matters.

It will give me no pleasure at all to look back and know that the 'experts' were right all along. I will be absolutely delighted to be proved wrong.

Zorro21 Tue 05-Jul-16 18:42:20

There were a lot of lies told by the Remain Camp. People voted Leave - live with it instead of swearing on this site and moaning. It ill befits a Grandma to swear to the extent that you do - are you really a Grandma ?

Zorro21 Tue 05-Jul-16 18:44:31

I've never come across such a lot of ill tempered moaners as there are on this discussion - not that it is much of a discussion. No wonder Nigel Farage had to report to the Police trolls who wanted to kill him - seems to me they're possibly Grandmas.

Anya Tue 05-Jul-16 18:44:33

Bad losers. Anti-democratic.

daphnedill Tue 05-Jul-16 18:45:04

Swearing? Where? hmm

daphnedill Tue 05-Jul-16 18:47:34

I suggest you study the meaning democratic processes, Anya. There is no agreed definition of the word 'democracy'.

Even North Korea describes itself as a democratic republic.

suzied Tue 05-Jul-16 18:50:53

I expect Germans who opposed Hitler in 1933 were told they were bad losers and anti democratic.

Anya Tue 05-Jul-16 18:53:28

Anti-democratic without any doubt,

Always bring up Hitler.if you think you're losing the arguement hmm

Jane10 Tue 05-Jul-16 18:59:47

But she hasn't lost the argument!
