Anti-Trump Demonstration Today

Today, I participated in the Women's March to The American Embassy in London in protest against Trump's attitude to women and to his proposed plans.
There were thousands of woman( and some men, babies in slings and pushchairs, marching children, even dogs on leads), all using the only method left to us to express our solidarity. It was cold, the sun shone, drums beat and people chatted, shared case histories, laughed, sand, cheered to each helicopter flying overhead and marched until they could move no more.
The police were wonderful and it was peaceful all round, full of goodwill.
There were hundreds of pink pussycat hats, original handmade placards and slogans, even a huge vagina in cardboard. My favourite was a placard( in background of one of the photos attached) stating thus:
A woman needs Trump
Like a fish needs climate change.

My DH, who was with me, thinks that the march, especially one in a foreign country, is a feel good moment for the participants but otherwise useless. Trump is now president and such marches, DH thinks, will do nothing to change the course of his government.

I disagree.

What do Gransnetters think?

In order for evil to prevail etc except this time the good women did something!

Rinouchka Sun 22-Jan-17 15:51:41

Jane10, our responses to roses must have been typed simultaneously!

I don't need to justify my actions to anyone. No one.

I will say this. For me, I'm hoping this is a warning shot to politicians here in the UK and elsewhere that people will rally - will march - will take action to be heard - if we don't like what they are doing.

daphnedill another patronising post from you, yes so called experts like Cameron and Osborne was that who you meant. But heyho life it seems has not been good to you, by your own statement you are poor as a church mouse, I on the other hand have come from humble beginnings but life has been very good to me smile

rosesarered Sun 22-Jan-17 15:56:36

a few marches today , tomorrow, next week [and they will fizzle out sometime] won't bother Trump a jot. This is unlike policy changes for wars.Think before he tweets? Can't see him coming over PC somehow. There won't be any more pussy jokes or lockeroom banter as he calls it, but no doubt will still continue doing things his way.
He may adopt a certain gravitas, his advisors will be working on it, but we have to remember he was voted for because he shoots from the hip [lip] and it's part of what a lot of people there like.

rosesarered Sun 22-Jan-17 15:58:49

you did ask Rinouchka if we thought your DH may be right!

Rinouchka Sun 22-Jan-17 16:02:53

Yes, roses, I did. And he is delighted that some GNetters agree with him!

rosesarered Sun 22-Jan-17 16:04:57

grin Hello Mr R [waves]

Ana Sun 22-Jan-17 16:06:32

And I was the very first one! grin

I take great comfort from the fact that the US has had some duff presidents in the past. We've all survived. Maybe he and Putin will get on so well that there will be peace. I doubt that he is the slightest bit interested in the opinions of women in the UK. I would love to hear why there were any women who voted for him.

Jane10 Sun 22-Jan-17 16:29:11

Mass protests throughout America too -and round the world!

thatbags Sun 22-Jan-17 16:41:58

According to the Sunday Times, there are rallies by Trump supporters as well. Are any other media outlets reporting such?

Anya Sun 22-Jan-17 16:50:58

Yes, American women, especially black American women, came out in force. It says to me that if any legislation is in the offing that is against human rights (of all kinds) then even more will be out on the streets next time.

The French have a wonderful history of protest usually putting up baracades and that has been effective in focusing the politicians. These protests are sending out a clear message that people will not take things lying down if Trump tries to push through policies like making all Muslims register or criminalising the gay community.

Ana Sun 22-Jan-17 16:52:15

Haven't seen any reports, bags.

LumpySpacedPrincess Sun 22-Jan-17 17:03:38

I'm encouraged that the marches were covered. There were huge anti tory rallies after the last election and they were barely covered by the media.

daphnedill Sun 22-Jan-17 17:10:39

Good grief, Firecracker. This might surprise you, but I'm not impressed by your rise from humble beginnings. Socialist principles enabled that, but it's a shame you didn't hold on to decent values. I am not unhappy that I'm poor, but I'm fortunate, because I had a good education, so I can use my brain to create happiness. Materialism and its trappings mean nothing to me, nor do the people who boast about possessing them. Life is great! (Far better than the alternative.)

daphnedill Sun 22-Jan-17 17:14:51

That's true, lumpy. I hope this can be sustained. It's not just about Trump, but the rise of global ignorance. I might even knit myself a pussy hat and go on a march.

varian Sun 22-Jan-17 17:17:26

Firecracker's smug statement that she had done well compared to you, daphne, actually shocked me. This is the sort of taunt you might expect from a nasty child in the playground, not from an adult woman.

Life is not generally fair. We should not claim credit for our good fortune or gloat over those who have not fared so well. None of us knows what is round the corner.

daphnedill Sun 22-Jan-17 17:30:19

I know, varian. I feel I was quite restrained in what I wrote. I have no respect at all for the likes of Firecracker. I really couldn't care less if people like that flaunt their wealth or achievements. I know how my life has been and I don't feel bad about it. At the age of 60+, I now know who I am. When the grim reaper calls my name, I won't be unhappy and I still won't have any respect for the likes of Firecracker. I've dealt with difficulties as best as I could and haven't exploited people for my own benefit - that's all that matters.

willsmadnan Sun 22-Jan-17 17:42:59

Remember that repulsive 'Brummie' character invented by Harry Enfield(one of many)... 'Of course we're considerably richer than yo' ? Firecracker obviously thinks that's an okay remarkhmm. He/she seems to have returned to the thread in another guise. Just saying wink

mcem Sun 22-Jan-17 17:59:32

Firecracker vile post!

BlueBelle Sun 22-Jan-17 18:03:06

The marches, and there will be more, are a message and yes Trump is so arrogant and thick skinned that he ll pretend there was only 20 people walking, he ll pay no heed at all, but the message will go round the world and like the suffergettes actions it can make a difference

Beammeupscottie Sun 22-Jan-17 18:48:12

It was the rough-rich vote that helped Trump. It's a pity money can't buy class or brains.

Iam64 Sun 22-Jan-17 18:48:34

I came across a programme on Sky Arts (who knew Sky did Arts?) last night on Bob Dylan. I enjoyed the programme, which reminded me how good Dylan was in his early years, so young, yet so talented. The other big thing that stood out for me, was the level of protest marches in support of civil rights, the crowds were racially mixed with white Americans marching in support of equal rights for Black Americans. This protest happened in my early adult life. The protests in the US and many other major cities yesterday, against Trump are happening in my later years. We go one step forward, two back in many ways.
We should never forget though as Rinouchka says, the anti Vietnmam war protests had an impact on the president of the time. Protest is our right and it does influence policy, it just takes a while to do so.
