The Trump presidency

The last Trump thread has run out of space. I suspect we need a new one. As he steams through his first week issuing royal edicts on a range of things and asserting that he will build a wall, how will politicians in Washington react to his fascist agenda along with his apparently immature and decidedly dodgy personality?

If you really can't see ( why the rush) ww then you are not as politically astute as I thought you were.
It matters greatly both in political and diplomatic ways that our PM should go over to the US quickly.

Why

Anniebach Mon 30-Jan-17 14:08:51

How can one look Muslim,

I agree. The title was correct in referring to the state. Whoever drafted the rest should not have mentioned the Queen - it just gives people a chance to niggle. It is about where we stand as the UK not about the personal.

POGS Mon 30-Jan-17 14:13:12

So the UK Government should have refused to visit the democratically elected President of the United States of America.

Right oh.

I am reminded of the words of Corbyn and how it could apply not only to our EU Referendum but to this issue with USA.

He said this:-

"Parliament has to respect the result of the Referendum.

We should not say we know better than the result of the Referendum.". (Amen to that)

Substitute Referendum for US Presidency Election.

Don't know, Anniebach. DD's boyfriend looks Arab(ish) but isn't Muslim and isn't too impressed. His father was born in Yemen.

Why? Because politically T May being unelected by the people in a GE is not in as strong as position as she might be, there is dissention both in her own party and the opposition, and she has to deliver as good a Brexit as possible, which means trade deals outside the EU.Diplomatically, establishing really good early relations with Donald Trump means that he will be grateful to the UK to get their backing as POTUS.
Since he now has the power to affect deals with us, this can only be a good move, and he may be more inclined further down the line to listen to May if he goes too far off piste.

Jen that is a bit startling isn't it (Mon 30-Jan-17 12:17:34)

I meant to ask. Where did you get that information from durhamjen?

daphnedill Mon 30-Jan-17 14:17:00

The last the UK needs is a trade deal with the US.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 14:18:25

We already trade a great deal with the US, but it could be even better.

varian Mon 30-Jan-17 14:20:17

The term liberal, in US politics is often used as an insult by the so called conservatives, It only means slightly to the left of the kkk. I agree this person could never by our standards be described as a liberal.

Anniebach Mon 30-Jan-17 14:24:39

I don't want their meat

daphnedill Mon 30-Jan-17 14:25:11

But it wouldn't be better. From the UK's point of view, it most certainly won't be better. We have a trade surplus and Trump wants to abolish trade deficits (from the US's POV). US exporters are champing at the bit to sell the UK cheap hormone-filled, chlorine washed, soy-fed foodstuffs and get their hands on the NHS and the UK pharmaceuticals market.

daphnedill Mon 30-Jan-17 14:27:09

Neither do I Anniebach and I bet British farmers don't either.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 14:28:01

I think that may be alternative truth dd that social media and various papers are full of these days.

rosesarered Mon 30-Jan-17 14:28:55

We won't be tearing up all our regulations in regard to accepting any old foodstuffs.

POGS Mon 30-Jan-17 14:30:07

So Scotland should refuse to export Whisky to the US as an example.

It is not ALL about trade there are other ramifications that require consideration, defence and intelligence sharing would be an example there.

whitewave Mon 30-Jan-17 14:34:51

rose but that is my point. In order to establish the sort of relationship that will be beneficial to the UK. Tearing over there before any real thought or indeed understanding as to how his presidency will develop has done us no favours whatsoever. It was neither an intelligent or clever thing to do and has resulted in the criticism she is now having to endure, both from the opposition, her own side and other world leaders. She has a bit of face to make up after Davos and this isn't helping.

daphnedill Mon 30-Jan-17 14:35:23

~lol~

Errmm, no roses

whitewave Mon 30-Jan-17 14:38:37

With regard to US meat products. It is guaranteed that Trump will go for our regulations with regard to animal welfare, and lowering the standards. Tariffs are so low there isn't any point in going for them. I think our standards are something to be proud of, but that is not to say these standards could not go further but to reduce themshock

daphnedill Mon 30-Jan-17 14:40:06

I agree with POGS that defence and intelligence sharing are probably the most important issues, but I'm not convinced that May made any progress with those issues. I wonder if she was told about Trump's executive order about immigrants from the 7 countries. I'd rather she had waited until things had settled down. Trump is firing in all directions at the moment. I don't see how it's possible to have any sort of sensible agreement.

nigglynellie Mon 30-Jan-17 14:40:13

I think using the word 'stunning'was rather clever as it has several connotations, not all necessarily flattering! Incredible, amazing, extraordinary astonishing etc. All of these things of course but not 100% indicating that you're pleased!!
Now if she'd said 'wonderful' that would behave been a bit desperate!!!!

daphnedill Mon 30-Jan-17 14:42:28

I hadn't thought about that, niggly, but you're right.

nigglynellie Mon 30-Jan-17 15:10:54

I think in meeting D.T early on, T.M did the right thing, a bit like testing the water, weighing up the problem, giving her time to size up the person we're up against first hand so to speak, before actually having to make any commitments, In fact, having a rekky! (sp!!) Another neat move I think.

whitewave Mon 30-Jan-17 15:12:37

Canada is behaving well I think
