This article in the Independent certainly gives food for thought, and puts things into perspective. It may explain a lot.

In September of 1954, the United States, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand and Pakistan formed the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, or SEATO. The purpose of the organization was to prevent communism from gaining ground in the region.

hmm we didn't get dragged into the Vietnam war, although Australia did to their regret.

I hope it never comes to that.

Do you suspect me of not thinking, then sarahellenetc ? confused
When did George Bush Snr jump ship/cross the house then?
He was a Republican POTUS, hardly Mr Democrat hmm !! . And Blair cosying up to either Bush was as nauseating a spectacle as May and Trump.
Your point is....?

MawBroon Tue 31-Jan-17 20:07:40

Nannyanny your point would be perfectly fine if it didn't affect us all.
To dismiss the worldwide outcry at what Trump is "promising " or threatening or has already made a hamfisted attempt at enacting, is to miss the point.
Hardly a Trump bashing bandwaggon.

Nannyanny Tue 31-Jan-17 20:47:42

I can safely say MawBroon that I have not missed the point, for better or worse Trump is president voted for by an American majority. This outcry is premature, he can't just carry on willy hilly, all laws are approved by congress and the senate, I'm not saying he's just a figurehead but he will be kept in check all being well.

Anniebach Tue 31-Jan-17 21:05:09

Sarah, the twin towers horror was two years before the Iraq war

Hollycat Tue 31-Jan-17 21:08:04

Thank you Rosesarered!wine

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 21:14:26

Trump wasn't voted into office by a majority, Nannyanny. He was voted into office by a minority after a dirty campaign.

marmar01 Tue 31-Jan-17 21:17:13

lets hope Trump is ok cos Pence is a total MADMAN!!!!!!

MawBroon Tue 31-Jan-17 21:17:28

Just the point I was about to make, daphnedill

This might shed more light on it fior nannyanny to anybody who still thinks Trump won the popular vote. (D. Trump Esq. for instancegrin )

Ana Tue 31-Jan-17 21:18:09

Not a real majority...sounds familiar

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 21:20:03

Who's going to keep him in check? Congress and Senate both have Republican majorities. It's going to take brave people in Congress, Senate, the judiciary, etc to stand up to him and face being sacked.

It's going to need a huge populist movement. The second American Civil War anyone?

Chewbacca Tue 31-Jan-17 21:22:19

Apart from when Nixon was impeached and removed from office, is there any precedent for a president to be removed because he's mentally unstable?

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 21:22:46

Pence's politics are odious IMHO, but at least he's not a loose cannon.

daphnedill Tue 31-Jan-17 21:24:06

No there isn't, Chewbacca. Apparently Article 25(?) was invoked when Bush senior had a serious operation, but it has never been used to get rid of POTUS permanently.

Rigby46 Tue 31-Jan-17 21:48:55

Nixon wasn't impeached <sigh>

Chewbacca Tue 31-Jan-17 21:51:45

Wasn't he Rigby? I'm so sorry, I thought he was. My apologies. I'll shuffle off and bother you no further.

Rigby46 Tue 31-Jan-17 22:05:01

I just think that if people are going to post information that is easily verifiable, then they might well, you know, verify it before posting?

Chewbacca Tue 31-Jan-17 22:24:52

Gosh sorry rigby , lesson learned, I won't do that again. blush

rosesarered Tue 31-Jan-17 22:58:50

"Apart from when Nixon was impeached and removed from office, is there any precedent for a president to be removed because he's mentally unstable?'"

You were not far off the mark in my opinion and if I have the facts right? I am sure somebody will point out the error I may make soon enough.

Papers were indeed proceeding to impeach Nixon but did he not 'resign' to save his skin?

So he was 'REMOVED' but by his own doing because of what was coming down the line, 'IMPEACHMENT'.
-

My understanding is 2 American Presidents were IMPEACHED.

President Andrew Johnson March 5th 1868. Senate votes fell short for his conviction.

President Bill Clinton December 19th 1998. Acquitted, again Senate fell short of votes for conviction.

President Richard Nixon 'RESIGNED' before impeachment papers being drawn up came to fruition. (Watergate)

On his resignation the next President, Gerald Ford, issued Nixon with a 'FULL and FREE PARDON'.

This sounds good but it is thought that whilst Nixon was not impeached he therefore could not be found gulity nor aquitted on impeachment. Ford giving him a 'PARDON' as opposed to Nixon being 'ACQUITTED' which implied 'GUILT' for something he was never tried for. Nixon's reputation was tarnished but he never the less resigned rather than face impeachment.

So if in a way you are not far off the mark if I have the facts right .

www.history.com/this-day-in-history/nixon-charged-with-first-of-three-articles-of-impeachment

Nixon released the tapes then avoided a trial by resigning.

So yes, the impeachment process was started but not completed.

Chewbacca Tue 31-Jan-17 23:24:58

Thanks POGS and Jalima , I knew impeachment had been involved in the Nixon presidency but Rigby was right, I should have checked myself before posting blush. USA appears to have had a somewhat "colourful " presidential history and has somehow come through them all. Whilst I think that Trump is ghastly, I accept that the vote to make him president wasn't mine to make. It will be interesting to see how this all pans out, won't it.

Jalima Tue 31-Jan-17 23:28:29

It wasn't our decision to make and we are becoming guilty of what we accuse America of constantly doing - interfering in another country's politics.

They surely have enough people over there who must all be working frantically behind the scenes to work out the best way to deal with him.

Eloethan Tue 31-Jan-17 23:33:39

I think grumppa's point is perhaps what concerns me most - what about the sanity of those that voted for him? I don't see why, even if you were poor and powerless, you would think it a good idea to vote for such a ghastly, vicious man.

POGS Tue 31-Jan-17 23:35:37

Chewbacca. (got the spelling correct this time blush

You are welcome.
