Why doesn't Starmer hold another referendum?
This article in the Independent certainly gives food for thought, and puts things into perspective. It may explain a lot.

And if you look at some of the comments made by "ordinary " Americans, in their newspaper comments, there is still a lot of support for him unfortunately Eloe. I'm the most surprised by the comments made by refugees who have already settled in the US; some are saying that they waited 3, 6 or 9 months to be allowed in, so why should other countries be expecting to be allowed in any quicker. Completely divided not just America but the rest of the world too.
ELOE you are such a kind hearted lady to be so concerned about the mental health of the millions of people who voted for DT and shame on the people who forced them to do so.May the good Lord bless you for being so concerning.
Why do I get the impression that this particular Christian is just being fucking sarcastic?
Anya. You are a very naughty girl for swearing, may god forgive you.
Tick, tock, another wind up? ⏰

@Eloethan re your comment last night about how hard it is to understand why the poor and disillusioned not to mention disadvantaged chose to support Trump (if I have understood you correctly) and I too have found it almost impossible. However Russell Brand - to whom I would not normally give the time of day - actually puts it well in his way in this clip.
It's a bit strange Eloethan to question the sanity of about 70 million people, unless it's in a jokey way.Imagine ( shudder) if Corbyn got in here at the next GE, you may be clapping your hands, but many millions would be aghast....we wouldn't really think you were crazy (though some may!) but just that you liked the sound of his policies.Well, so it is in the US, being inclined to overlook his faults because they think he will act on his policies ( which he is doing.)
There are 16 countries in the world who do not allow entry to Israeli citizens, and 8 of those do not allow entry to people have an Israeli stamp in their passoprt.
Is this racist?
People who have...
Any of the sixteen countries in the West maddyone?
Yes maddy it is.
But should America be following their lead or setting an example to the rest of the world? Surely their border security is stringent enough to weed out suspected terrorists? Or are their security services not up to the standard they should be?
Not sure if it is racism or support for Pakistan , I don't know the countries
Have read the report from Russell Brand and although he's not my favourite person, this time, imo he's spot on!
Of course discrimination against Israeli citizens is wrong, but I'm afraid they're damned by their very existence which in the eyes of many makes their discrimination not just ok, but desirable! Outrage can be very selective!!
Chewbacca
They are/were (don't know the state of chaos at the moment) turning away those with entry visitor visas which they had to go to the US embassy in their country to get. Business travellers, tourists, etc. So they want to put in more extreme vetting procedures at these US embassies to get the visa. Not very good for those who already were on the plane and the airlines who had to send them back at their expense. The airline industry was not happy about non-consultation.
Some students, even with existing student visas who had been in the US at school already, returning from holidays with family were stopped from entering, too.
Those who have applied for settlement visas DID all go through the several months of processing already. My husband emigrated back with me in 1993 and even then it took 3 months for him as a Brit.
The ban caught out those who had their settlement (provisional green cards) visas in hand from those countries... and you have a face-to-face interview when you arrive for the first time as well and must designate which airport you are arriving to. The vetting was very strong. I cannot imagine it has gotten easier. So why ban them?
Existing settlement visa holders, like Mo Farrah, who were out of the US and returning originally had some problems, but that got sorted.
My point about the sanity of those who voted for Trump was to suggest, perhaps too obliquely, that once you start questioning one person's sanity it can be very hard to stop. I did not intend to suggest that they actually were insane, and more than the Brexit voters were insane....
My worry with Trump is not so much with any personality disorder from which he may suffer - it is easy to pin one on most political leaders if one tries hard enough - but with the way he goes about things. If you are going to introduce new border controls, in accordance with an election promise, you go to the State Department and say "This is my promise; how do I give effect to it?" The officials then think through the practical problems of implementation and come up with a workable solution. I hope he learns quickly what is actually involved in running a country and actually doing something effectively.
It wasn't our decision to make and we are becoming guilty of what we accuse America of constantly doing - interfering in another country's politics.
Absolutely.
Trump wasn't voted into office by a majority, Nannyanny. He was voted into office by a minority after a dirty campaign
As I have mentioned, probably in another thread, it seems to me that Trump did more campainging in key states.
If it took a majority to win, he would have done his campaign differently.
If Hillary Clinton had done the campaign the way he did, she might have won instead.
It was getting to the whitehouse that mattered, not winning a majority, in america.
Not much point winning the wrong race.
Can I inject just a moment of frivolity and tension relief, with this interactive page?

After a brief visit, the serious discussion can continue.
grumpaa and Lewlew yes exactly ( to both your comments.)
I'm sure there were many different reasons why people voted for Trump, but if we're thinking of specific reasons why some people did, perhaps if you'd been unemployed for years, and someone said they were going to create jobs - you might just overlook the man's personality and outrageous behaviour.
I watched some footage of towns with people living in abject poverty, with no hope of a better life, and it made me wonder if in those circumstances I would have voted for him.
It would be interesting to know how many of over 1 million Native Americans eligible to vote, acually voted. I read that elders and associations had been actively encouraging them to engage in the election and vote for change, but that they struggle to establish voting rights.
This group clearly thought Bernie Saunders would give them a 'Future to Believe in'. and would presumably have voted for Clinton.

Eloethan:
I think I posted this link some time ago - it partly explains why some types of people voted for Trump:

Also, I have a theory that many poor people admire rich people, hoping a little bit might rub off on them, and think, to get so rich, he must know what he's doing.

[if some people want to post the same sort of thing from a different website, be my guest.
I am beginning to think that us on this forum are hugely out of step with american voters.
And probably, either because we do not really know the half of what is going on, or...
Not sure why. I was going to say because our media may be a bit biased or wrong?
How else can we explain the differences?
Or is there a large silent majority on gransnet?
