Has his halo slipped?

Is he really just the same as some of those other overpaid, rich celebrities who "do charity" on one hand and then take it directly away with the other by not paying his fair share of taxes?

I always thought that DB was one of the good guys and I am truly disappointed with what I have learned in the last few days.

gillybob Thu 09-Feb-17 23:56:31

Soon we will be typing on some thread about funny things our DGC say or do and have to add "allegedly" after every bloomin' sentence . angry

Rigby46 Fri 10-Feb-17 00:09:16

It's patently absurd Jalima to trot out vacuous phrases like that. Who on earth is saying that we expect people to be practically perfect in every way and the idea that you can't criticise unless you are without sin? Oh please.... That would be the end of much of GN for one thing - I would think many regular posters do a fair bit of that and why not? Come to think if it J haven't you just done that yourself by criticising us for casting stones when not being sin free. And yes I do think AB is an ardent admirer, she threw her twopennerth into this thread when she hadn't read anything at all about the story.

Iam64 Fri 10-Feb-17 08:33:27

Thanks Jalima for your comments on what has become, yet another, very nasty thread. None of us are perfect, and the reminder that we should 'let s/he who is without sin cast the first stone' is timely.
It doesn't matter whether the Beckham's aren't perfect. His emails were hacked, it's not on to hack private emails then tout them round to the highest bidder. Whatever people's personal views of the Beckhams individually, as a brand or as a family, what is absolutely clear is that both of them work very hard. People who work with them speak positively about the experience. I would run a million miles from a life in the lime light, I spent several years pointing out the pitfalls of acting/modelling to one of my teenagers and I'm relieved to say she listened to me. I accept that my views are just that. I wouldn't judge the Beckhams for encouraging their children to pursue employment in similar areas to their parents. How many professionals encourage their children to be lawyers, doctors, how many teachers do we know whose children followed a similar career path. The Beckhams can use their money and influence, how different is that to the families who send their children to the same famous private schools and onward to Oxbridge, then the city?

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 09:07:36

Me an ardent fan of a footballer? i thought the Beckhams lived in Europe or America, didn't even know they lived in this country

Nop, not a fan.

I think the same as Jalima and Iam.

And I also dislike envy of people's wealth when they have worked for it and mocking people who have not had a good education.

Reading people's private emails is the same as hacking phones , nasty, dirty, sordid, sly, dishonest and cruel

gillybob Fri 10-Feb-17 09:51:39

I believe they live in the USA Anniebach and only just pop back for the amount of days allowed to avoid tax. Not that I have a problem with that at all. Hence why the UNICEF meeting was rearranged. It would have meant he would have had to pay more tax.

When you are in the public eye (and as has been said previously) court the press, media etc. as the Beckhams clearly do, then perhaps you should be doubly careful what you write in an email . Not saying it was right for them to be hacked mind you.

I wonder if the saying "there is no such thing as bad publicity" stands in this situation? hmm

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 10:16:45

Very few have condemned the theft of his emails Gilly , so his big mistake was thinking emails were private

I don't think the publicity will cause long term harm , the Beckhams may court publicity, I never read celeb mags, i can only recall hearing him interviewed twice, recently he was on Desert Island Discs and years ago on Parkinson's when she revealed to the world she called him golden balls .

What I think is brutal has been the criticism of him making money and the mocking of his lack of education. It has certainly caused me to wonder which posters are mocked because they are crap at spelling grin

gillybob Fri 10-Feb-17 10:25:20

I have been mocked pulled up for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors loads of times Anniebach I couldn't give a monkeys . I remember a recent serious thread when I said bare instead of bear and someone (I can't honestly remember who and care even less) pulled me up about it. They had no comment to make and nothing to add to the conversation they just had to "put me right" hmm now if I spot one of my goofs in time I correct myself further down the thread. That way they don't get chance to.

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 10:37:07

Gilly, I think the spelling critics have given up on me ,not bothered anyway, well I get cross when I spell someone 's name incorrectly

KatyK Fri 10-Feb-17 10:41:39

I would never dream of correcting someone's grammar/spelling (was my apostrophe in the right place?). When I said Beckham makes me cringe in interviews, I just think that someone so high profile with pots of money and (presumably) advisors, should have been given a few lessons in how to speak. A small point in the scheme of things, but it's irritating to me, what with me being perfect grin

Jalima Fri 10-Feb-17 10:50:32

I understood that anniebach was not a fan of Beckham - it is fairly obvious and anyway he was the England captain not the Welsh one wink and I do understand what she means.
People are missing the point - a crime has been committed and blackmail attempted but that is glossed over in the hoo hah about what the hacked emails contained.

This thread is like Cissie and Ada except that it is not funny.

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 10:52:02

So the chap who founded the Big Issue and is now in the Lords should not speak unless he has gone back to school to learn to speak proper . What about those with Money who have accents ? should they too ?

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 10:57:45

Jalima, thankfully I have never used 'duw' in my posts , but duw it's hard remembering not to grin

I did watch the Welsh team playing in the World Cup last year, or was it the Euro cup? Anyway I think football is sooo boring , but not when Wales plays !

KatyK Fri 10-Feb-17 10:58:23

I don't mean accents or his voice. When people in the public eye say things like 'we was going on holiday' or such like, which Beckham does, it's irritating. Well, maybe it's just me and as I said, it's a small matter. I'm sure he has done a lot of good with his charity work.

Jalima Fri 10-Feb-17 11:01:30

Rigby46 you never miss a chance!

It's been such fun since some of the Mumsnetters allegedly grew up and joined us.

Here's another one:
John ch 8 v7

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 11:22:45

KatyK, people saying was not were irritates you? Doesn't bother me, criticising the speech of a person who had a poor education bothers me , no matter their wealth or lack of it.

KatyK Fri 10-Feb-17 12:33:04

I was poorly educated myself, having been dragged up in the back streets of Birmingham. I try not to be judgemental, having been through so much horrible stuff in my life. Yes I do find it irritating that people in the public eye, particularly some TV presenters, cannot speak properly. I honestly don't know how they get jobs when they are interviewing people and ask questions like 'how was ya feeling when that happened?' Maybe I'm just a grumpy old woman. There are more important things to be irritated by I know!

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 12:51:27

I do understand but Beckham is not a tv reporter, just an ex footballer . If he suddenly stsrted speaking as you want him to think of the mockery he would get for that .

He may be wealthy but the amount of mocking he has endured over years must have caused hurt

gillybob Fri 10-Feb-17 12:54:33

His millions must help to mend his hurt though Anniebach smile

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 13:05:24

Do you think so Gilly? I believe there are things money cannot buy

Ana Fri 10-Feb-17 13:09:31

If he was that bothered by his lack of education Annie, he's had plenty of time since his football career ended to do something about it.

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 13:35:23

No idea if he is bothered about leaving school young Ana, I am speaking of the years of mocking and cannot agree that money eases this for people. Why did George Michael need drugs, why was Tara Palmer- Tompkinson so troubled, why did Robin Williams take his life , money and fame didn't help them .

Ana Fri 10-Feb-17 13:39:43

I thought gillybob was joking, but I can see it's a waste of time trying to be reasonable in the face of such a determined defence!

Jalima Fri 10-Feb-17 13:43:25

I will never actually receive a gong because I keep deliberately splitting infinitives.

Anniebach Fri 10-Feb-17 14:46:16

But Ana , you have just wasted time typing replying to me is a waste of time grin

gillybob Fri 10-Feb-17 16:38:40

What exactly do you think I was joking about Ana?

The tax avoidance? , the foul mouth rants about not getting his "deserved" knighthood? , the not attending a UNICEF meeting for fear of having to pay tax for being in the country.....?

I was however joking about his millions helping to "mend his hurt" though. smile

Having ones feelings hurt with £500m or so at ones disposal would be just the same as having your feelings hurt and being broke.

Do you think so Gilly? I believe there are things money cannot buy

Like a knighthood maybe?
