Labour shifts to back a customs union with EU after Brexit (Sky News)
news.sky.com/story/labour-shifts-to-back-a-customs-union-with-eu-after-brexit-11267193
Sir Keir Starmer Labours Shadow Brexit secretary said Labour had "unanimously" agreed at a meeting last week to "develop" their Brexit policy.
He said: "It's a customs union… there's going to have to be a new agreement, but will it do the work of the current customs union? Yes, that's the intention."
Sir Keir admitted Labour's position means it will have to be "negotiated" as to who is in control of Britain's trade policy after Brexit.
He said: "We will have to have a say but the real point is - because we all want trade agreements, we all want more trade agreements - are we more likely to get them if we do it jointly with the EU or on our own?
From Labour Leave. (below) The Andrew Marr interview.
Marr: After we leave, who will be in charge of trade policy?
Starmer: That will have to be negotiated.
"Keir_Starmer confirms a Labour government would sell out the British public on Brexit and tie us into a protectionist Customs Union with the EU. Shameful!"

Just read an interesting analogy - it's like the country as a whole had a stroke at the referendum, and is now getting its senses back.
I have this talk about communism (and it seems we are talking about revolutionary communism here) is only coming from the very old who were brainwashed after the war. It just requires ignoring as there are very few who feel that way although it is not surprising that some of them pop up on a grandparents forum.
Democratic socialism has given us, according the Economists list (hardly a left wing organ of the press) the most democratic country in the world in Norway. That makes me think we should at least be looking at it.

Businesses want a customs union. I think they know what they are talking about.
day6 did you listen to Corbyns explanation as to why labour wants to stay in the CU.?
Makes sense doesn’t it?
Do you think that sort of agreement would make it easier to stay within the Space agency, possibly keep Galileo project and easy access to Euratom, retain meaningful links with the medicines agency, keep links with Interpol and other networks etc? That sort of thing worries me.
I don't think it made sense to you though ww.
He didn't say he wants to stay in the CU.
""Britain will need a bespoke relationship of its own. Labour would negotiate a new and strong relationship with the single market "
Customs union and single market are not the same thing, though, primrose.
I thought you would know that.
We have long argued that a Customs Union is a viable option for the final deal. So Labour would seek to negotiate a new, comprehensive UK/EU Customs Union to ensure there are no tariffs with Europe and to help avoid any need, whatsoever, for a hard boarder on Northern Ireland. Labour would not countenance a deal that left Britain as a passive recipient of rules, decided elsewhere by others, that would mean ending up as a mere rule taker.
The European Union is not the root of all our problems and leaving it will not solve all our problems. Likewise the EU is not the source of all enlightenment and leaving it does not inevitably spell doom.
There will be some who tell you Brexit is a disaster for this country and some will tell you that Brexit will create a land of milk and honey. The truth is more down to earth and it is in our hands. Brexit is what we make of it, together; the priorities and choices we make in negotiations.
So you think he wants to stay in the customs union too Jen?
Read GracesGran's post, primrose. Those are his words.
First paragraph says A customs union.
I am listening to him now on the news. Perhaps you ought to, too.
Thanks for the transcript of the main points of his speech GGMk2. Exactly what I said yesterday. It's even been dubbed 'the cake and eat it' speech.
"Remainers in the Conservative party such as Anna Soubry, Ken Clarke, Nicky Morgan and Stephen Hammond have teamed up with centrist Labour MPs including Chuka Umunna to table amendments to both the Taxation (Cross-Border Trade) Bill and the Trade Bill that would force Britain to be part of a customs union with the European Union after Brexit. This directly contradicts current Tory policy, which is that there won’t be a customs union of any kind. Today, Mr Corbyn confirmed that Labour now wants a customs union with the European Union.
Mrs May has deployed her classic tactic of putting a hard thing off for as long as possible and hoping it will somehow go away in the meantime by delaying these votes for several weeks. But if this amendment passes, then she will not be able to negotiate free trade deals with non-EU countries as she would like. And that’s why those around her are urging her to take the highest-stakes route possible to stop the amendment from succeeding by making the vote a matter of confidence."
An interesting time ahead.
I noticed Norman Smith lied about what labour voters voted for, pedalling yet again the Brexit broadcasting corporation message.
No, they did not vote to leave the customs union, and the single market.
Many of them had no idea what they were. They probably still don't.
After my middle brother graduated he went to do further degrees in the US. He married an American and stayed there except for a couple of sabbaticals in Australia and Switzerland. His kids are American. After twenty-five years of being defined on his British passport as a "Resident Alien" in the States he decided to apply for American citizenship. This meant giving up his British citizenship. He had a choice. He made it.
Will the Brits currently living in other European countries not have this kind of choice? How did academics like the bloke in the Guardian article manage before there were freedom of movement rules within but restricted to the EU?
I don't think my brother suffered from the lack of so-called freedom of movement between the US, Australia, and Europe.
In short, is there really an unsurmountable problem that visas and similar arrangements wouldn't deal with as they already do between non-EU countries?
When my Danish family go on a ferry, they have to go to Holland, through Germany then Denmark.
They might have to stop at all the borders and show their passports, apart from the ones with Danish passports, who will only have to show theirs once.
I am sure that will not bother you, but the same will happen to all those with British passports living in the EU.
An extra 1.5 million people clogging up the border posts unnecessarily every time they travel from one EU country to another.
Boris chose to be British rather than American as he would have had to pay US tax. That was just last year, I believe.
durhamjen
an extra 1.5 million people clogging up the border posts unnecessarily every time they travel from one eu country to another
Have I read this right that you believe that there are still border posts across Europe.
All you see now is a sign saying you are now entering xyz.
At some 'crossings' there is a building where you can buy your vignette. Most people don't bother with them as the chance of getting pulled up is ny on zero.
We preferred it when you did have to stop at each country because it felt as if you were going somewhere. Now, it's all one big country.
Will the Brits currently living in other European countries not have this kind of choice?
I would have thought so, and they would not necessarily have to give up British citizenship as some countries allow dual, or even triple, nationality.
Johnson said it was unfair that the U.S. government was forcing him to pay capital gains tax on the sale of his Islington home, even though he had not lived in the United States since he was 5 years old.
Who can blame him then!
It does make me laugh a little bit that Theresa May is always criticised for not giving us all a blow by blow account of her every negotiation, surely one doesn’t show ones hand until negotiations are won & secured, or even lost . There seems to be an awful lot of armchair politicians out there.
Interesting that Corbyn says the EU is not the source of all enlightenment and that leaving it will not spell doom!
Some of us have been saying that for ages!
He also says Brexit is what we make of it, together......another thing some of us have been saying for ages.
