Boris Johnson's Latest 'Gaff'

Is it just me?

Watching the tv tonight and noting the 'shock-horror' over Boris Johnson's refusal to apologise for saying that women wearing the burka look like letter-boxes.

Why all the fuss? I'm sick of the media snatching odd, trivial comments and making mountains out of them! (Haven't we got more things to worry about than this?)

Yes, I suppose that comment was a bit rude. But a sacking offence? I think not.

In his defence, in his article in the The Daily Telegraph, Mr. Johnson did not support Denmark's new face-covering ban. And all this talk about him being 'Islamophobic' is completely groundless. So, he said something, publicly, that could be considered 'insensitive' by some.

But why are we all so quick nowadays to be offended by throw-away, silly, comments?

Get a life! (Or some more important news!)

Maybe they feel safer from all the racist bigots they meet every day.
PECS Islam is not a race - it is a religion, with different sects as in other religions, some stricter than others.

I can’t see why people are so incensed by the burqua. I live in a Muslim area. I don’t see a burqua every day but perhaps one a week. I have never seen a lady in a burqua who looked at all likely to be a man; he would have to be very small and slim. If you smile at the pretty eyes in the letterbox you will likely see them smile back. I hope they are happy to wear it. No doubt there are some who are oppressed by their menfolk but you don’t have to be in a burqua for that to be a suspicion. I am honestly happier to see a woman in a burqua than some of our young females with wobbly bottoms in thin leggings or short shorts and everything hanging out on top.

Boris Johnson in my opinion is a boor

The first time I saw a shape, totally draped in black with a hole near the top,I honestly thought it was a pillar box on its way to a fancy-dress party.

Gill bob
Why would your daughter not want to ask these ladies to move? I do not understood why tilt would be a problem if the are using tables that are supposed to be for customers?

Fennel Thu 09-Aug-18 11:41:53

If it's correct that more muslim women are wearing the burqua now than in the past that could be more worrying.
The spread of more extreme fundamentalism, interpretation of the Koran.
Eldest son works in Kuwait which used to be quite liberal. Now becoming less liberal.

gillybob Thu 09-Aug-18 11:42:40

Because she is quiet and hates confrontation pinkwallpaper There are quite a few of them and her senior manager has told her not to, for fear of being accused of racism.

We have a small predominantly Muslim area in our town (they tend not to mix) and we are seeing more recently than we ever did. I wonder why?

Worrying indeed Fennel

I agree with Nellie and Maizie, it was spiteful and rude and somehow gives others permission to comment and be rude too. Ladies wearing the Nicab or full face cover are attacked more often now than previously, Boris is high profile and knew his comment would stir things.

Nobody comments on how stupid he often looks.
And it is just women's clothes they want to censure. Too short, too revealing etc. Women going to the beach in long black trousers and tops because of religious reasons are criticised too. And it is not just Moslems. Jewish women wear a head covering if very observant.

gillybob Thu 09-Aug-18 11:48:52

He does often make himself look stupid and almost always looks like he has been dragged through a bush backwards but what does that change?

KirbyGirl Thu 09-Aug-18 11:53:30

Vickya, I think 'nobody comments on how stupid he looks' is not correct. why do you think that photograph was printed if not to show this?

Too many generalisations! Too much stupid journalism.!I've just read an articles which say only 89 people didn't watch love island, and everybody is wearing barefoot sandals, espadrilles or sliders. I'm not and neither are my friends!!

Fennel Thu 09-Aug-18 11:54:55

"Nobody comments on how stupid he often looks."
I hardly dare post this, from a letter in today's Guardian (not mine!):
" I think Boris Johnson looks like a baboon's bottom with a haystack on top".
Obviously intended to be a comment in the same style as Boris' about the burqa.

vickya Thu 09-Aug-18 11:59:36

Sorry, you are right, there were joke comments with the picture I posted. Ok there is less attempt to censure and control what men wear. And I agree with those who have said Boris is not a friend of women's rights.

mabon1 Thu 09-Aug-18 12:11:18

This man was a journalist, he knows full well what he was saying .

When i was a Head Teacher a young mum came in one morning thrilled to bits with the new clothes her husband had brought her back from his holiday in Bangladesh.... complete black outfit complete with mesh window... she came to the office to show us... i thought she was thrilled by the fact he'd bought her something as usually they all wore pretty thin cotton sari's etc...including dad at home... we were so horrified that an ordinary quite young shy woman was now wearing such an outfit...
a child coming along the corridor saw her and leapt in the air with delight and shouted Darth Vader... causing hysterics around him... and the young woman to cringe in a doorway...
I had to tell him that was an inappropriate comment and he went off a bit subdued..
well... did that open the door to abuse from his mother ... over the top but really her argument was that my young bangladesh mother DID look like Darth Vader in the eyes of a 7 year old and that's OK with her...

Wonder what you lot would have done..?

sylviann Thu 09-Aug-18 12:22:44

I don't think Boris Johnson should apologising might have been inappropriate but true he's been called all sorts of thing it nobodies made a big todo about it political correctness has gone mad and seems all one sided

moggie57 Thu 09-Aug-18 12:48:41

its all crap really. its the media with nothing else better to do.everyone makes throwaway comments. even me that said the other month that i didnt want to end up with a sun tan that made me look like an african. not meaning anything as i was with my seychelles penpal .who is a very dark african lady. she just laughed and so did others. its only GB that takes offence,...

lemongrove Thu 09-Aug-18 12:51:08

I don’t think there is any point in Boris ‘apologising’ as he knew full well what he was saying so an apology means nothing.
Not being a Minister now, he felt free to say what he likes and he was/is setting out his stall to be PM.
For many reasons I hope that will never happen...if it comes to him or Corbyn as Leaders I shall have to abstain from voting for the first time ever.

gillybob Thu 09-Aug-18 12:52:57

The devil or the deep blue sea lemon ? I think I’d feel the same .

lemongrove Thu 09-Aug-18 12:53:08

I don’t like either the niqab or the burkha either, it makes non people of the wearer and I want women of all nationalities living here to take a full part in life.

lemongrove Thu 09-Aug-18 12:54:11

Exactly gilly

inishowen Thu 09-Aug-18 12:54:40

I hate the look of the women who look through a slit. You would wonder if they ever take photos on a day out. They wouldn't know who was who. Also when out and about they wouldn't recognise if they bumped into friend and family. I'm not being pc. I'm sick of it.

Neilspurgeon0 Thu 09-Aug-18 12:59:20

Oh yes Nicenanny3 I do so very much agree, storm in a reduculous tea cup

NfkDumpling Thu 09-Aug-18 12:59:59

How do children find their mum’s at the school gate?

Jimbow15 Thu 09-Aug-18 13:00:53

I suppose if politicians can try and not say stupid and irrelevant things then they won't offend anyone. They are paid enough to watch what they say.
How about them doing a decent day's work instead of acting the fool all the tine

Anniebach Thu 09-Aug-18 13:07:04

His comments are to be put before an independent panel , will they be elevated to the Lords if they absolve him
