Any extremes are dangerous, left or right and need guarding against. The LP is slightly reminding me of the rise of the Nazi party between the wars, and look where that got us all in Europe and else where. Moderate politics is what most people feel comfortable with on all sides of the political spectrum.

grannypauline Sun 09-Sept-18 15:27:57

Niggly - how are moderate politics going to solve our various problems - housing, low wages, poverty, education? Grandad1943 asked this earlier and I don't think he got a reply here.

nigglynellie Sun 09-Sept-18 16:00:34

Perhaps some realism, common sense and compassion thrown in?!

Actually what is wrong with Marxism ?

Just empirical evidence - it didn’t work!

Fennel Sun 09-Sept-18 16:48:19

Pauline I've asked the same question in the past.
Many people are afraid of it. Maybe because it advocates revolution in order to overthrow the status quo. Maybe the ideal is good but as Maw said it doesn't work in the longterm. Have you read Dr. Zhivago?

trisher Sun 09-Sept-18 16:49:37

Bloody hell! Now I've heard it all the LP likened to the Nazi party. Y. ou do realise that it was the socialists who fought the fascists in Spain, in Germany and on the streets of London. Socialist who were far more left wing than most of the present Labour Party you so fear. As for the posts about how the party was a broad church under Blair. People who disagreed with Blair were sidelined, or bullied probably the best example being Clare Short.

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 16:59:30

Clare Short was silenced ? That is sooo funny.

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 17:01:25

Where has revolutions been a success?

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 17:12:26

Thinking of the Blair government and comparing it with the shadow cabinet now !

MaizieD Sun 09-Sept-18 17:31:42

What I'm trying to find out, grannypauline is if it's solving things like that which people actually want.

There are, after all, people who aren't in the slightest bit bothered that such states exist.

All we're getting is what people don't want.

Jane10 Sun 09-Sept-18 17:36:14

The old truism has ever been more apt. You can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all the people all the time.
There is most certainly a need for a middle ground between the two large parties each of which seem to be becoming more and more extreme in their socialist/Marxist vs cspitalist/fascist ways.

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 17:43:57

The same as happened in the 70’s , 80’s. The country endured the strikes through the 70’s, then came the far left and 1983 which gave the country Thatcher, little wonder a centre left Party won three general elections

nigglynellie Sun 09-Sept-18 18:04:12

So called socialists now behaving like Fascists?!! (anti semitism?!) that's the comparison! variation on a theme I agree, but the overtones are just as sinister!

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 18:12:30

Trevor Phillips supports Chuka Umumma , the top of the Labour Party is anti semetic

trisher Sun 09-Sept-18 18:19:27

Annie read page 29 books.google.co.uk/books?id=FJaEAgAAQBAJ&lpg=PA29&ots=RhWAlPVgsS&dq=clare%20short%20silence%20d%20by%20campbell&pg=PA29#v=onepage&q=clare%20short%20silence%20d%20by%20campbell&f=false

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 18:24:43

Sorry trisher, tiny print , wouldn’t enlarge on my iPad, what is the book title and who is the author?

grannypauline Sun 09-Sept-18 18:51:53

Yes, various so-called Marxist states have turned out VERY badly - to put it mildly. The theory is egalitarian but the practice has been very flawed. That is why socialists and Marxists know they have to ensure a democratic and accountable government.

But Capitalism has no such "fix". It has to make increasing profits and cut costs. This cannot be to the benefit of its workers or consumers. In addition it needs wars to keep its armaments industry in profit.

trisher Sun 09-Sept-18 19:18:35

Social Policy, the Media and Misrepresentation
edited by Bob Franklin- Annie
Basically it's an account of how Alistair Campbell banned people from talking to the media and briefed the lobby about how irrelevant and untrustworthy their comments were. Amongst those he targetted were Harriet Harman, Frank Field and Clare Short. This was the "Broad Church" which existed under Blair. Gordon Brown by the way was described as "psychologically flawed"

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 19:32:50

Thank you trisher , can’t find anything about a Bob Franklin , but who penned it?

You have come up with three names, Clare did leave the party by choice, Harriet and Frank still there.

You compare three alleged allegations of bullying in ten years with numerous in three years , sorry a poor defence from you

OldMeg Sun 09-Sept-18 19:36:57

Clare Short was silenced ? That is sooo funny

Really? Well that is what she told the Chilcote Enquiry. Are you saying she was lying Annie?

I have no reason to disbelieve her.

OldMeg Sun 09-Sept-18 19:44:20

Blair rode rough shod over cabinet members and public opinion re the Iraq war to push his own (and George Bush’s) agenda. He was certainly guilty of using bullying tactics to get his own way.

trisher Sun 09-Sept-18 20:06:43

It's a collection of essays by academics Annie that's why there's an editor. If you choose to believe everything under Blair was hunky-dory that's up to you. Fortunately most aren't so naive.

lemongrove Sun 09-Sept-18 20:08:21

Marxism, Communism etc......all end badly.Capitalism for all it's flaws, is the best political model there is.

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 20:14:35

trisher, I am trying to believe anyone succeeded in silencing Frank Field and it is difficult. Considering Clare repeated on radio that British spies were intercepting UN communications I am surprised she was advised to zip it . She was a member of the privy council.

I think she made the right choice when she became an independent MP

Anniebach Sun 09-Sept-18 20:19:18

Good grief trisher, I accept I was green in believing Corbyn was honest but I have never thought any government was all hunky-dory . Untill exchanging posts with Corbynites I never encountered people who thought a party leader was the second coming and even refuse to believe things he has said and which is recorded .
