The remaining member states MaizieD? Oh you mean the ones that we will spend billions on when we bail out their failing economies if we stay in the EU? Greece, Spain, Italy? Oh yes, THOSE remaining member states, sure, the ones that are practically bankrupt and won't have to pay back their debts. Yes, of course we want to stay tied to them, why wouldn't we? Jeez, the sooner we leave the better.

"There will be NO renegotiation!" says Juncker for EU. Let us get out NOW!
(290 Posts)So, the EU will tie us to them forever and tell us when we can leave, and which trade deals we broker with other countries are acceptable.
I really, really hope there is a well-developed plan B, because our dealing with the WTO has to be the best deal for the UK.
NO DEAL has to be the way forward.
I think we are seeing just how tied and powerless we will be if we allow Brussels to continue to pull our strings.
Can I recommend Sam Willis's excellent series 'Invaders' which is on BBC4 catchup. In which he points out that, throughout the centuries our nation has been created by people from all over Europe moving here. A lot of food for thought in the three programmes.
lemongrove, in regard to stockpiling and your enthusiasm for it, could you suggest how we are to cope with the situation in chilled and fresh foods.
The warehouse on Severnside is only to hold stock in tinned and dry foods. In that, obviously chilled and fresh foods cannot be stockpiled in that way. So, I would imagine that every supermarket chain in the country are open to suggestions on that problem.
My heritage is Celtic and Jewish. I don't care, I am not interested and never have been.
I describe myself as European and I am neither lying nor virtue signaling.
I don't think it's down to anybody else to tell me who i am.
Common Transit Convention between UK and EU which has been agreed means that there should not be any hold up in lorries leaving / arriving in UK from EU countries Grandad.
I assumed that as you are heavily involved in the haulage industry you would have known this.
If there isn't going to be a problem*GG13*, why are the govt. stockpiling?
Trading with the world instead of Europe is going to increase air miles and add to the problems of controlling the climate.
Bossyrossy
So you think we have are going to have to choose between the two, hilarious ?
MaizieD as I am not in government I have no idea.
Surely there is nothing wrong with planning for all eventualities.
This Government is doomed if it does and doomed if it doesn’t.
Grannygravy, the Common Transit Convention signed only yesterday covers cross-border checks when the Vehicle is already travelling in the European Union from Britain. It will mean that drivers will not have to show documents at each border that they cross, but those documents will be required when they arrive at their "final destination."
In terms of the European Union that will be at the port of entry or exit where those documents will have to be shown and checked for trade tariffs to be applied as Britain will be a third party nation after the 29th of March.
At least, that is how I read the agreement in the little time since it's been published, and I cannot see how else it could be done.
Evidence to that can be witnessed In that the British Government have given a statement of "The UK Government HOPES it will make border clearances easier at key ports and airports, such as Dover and Holyhead.
Many I feel will think that hoping is not enough based on all the failed predictions on Brexit this shambles of a government has made.
How do you see tariffs being assessed if not on port inspection GrannyGravy
Why is the Stobart group pouring £ millions into upgrading the runway at Southend airport?
Because the planes are not going to stop flying
I am not a haulage or customs expert Grandad.
Petra some people think that EU controls the skies???
By the way the Common Transit Convention will not in any way solve the Irish border issue.
Theresa May told us a few weeks ago that it would be a choice between "her deal" , "no deal" and "no brexit" but she only seems to be preparing for the first two.
Surely she should also be preparing for the sensible choice- NO BREXIT?
That's the 39 BILLION pounds choice which comes with open borders. Great deal for the UK - NOT!
Why is that the best deal - or indeed even worth considering now that we have seen just how difficult it is to get any sort of favourable terms from the EU?
I should add, 39 billion deal plus, EVERY SINGLE YEAR, open borders, no limit to EU immigration, and a liability to bail out the Euro to the tune of even more of our taxpayer billions when/if it fails or the economies of other members states falter, as happened in Greece.
We were mad to stay in the EU as long as we did, imo.
It will be interesting to see, when they are apprehended as I am sure they will be, whether the perpetrators of this drone incident are British citizens or infiltrators from the EU 27. My bet is that they will be found to be UK citizens.
GrannyGravy13 Quote [I am not a haulage or customs expert Grandad.] End Quote
So why are you quoting complicated documents such as the Common Transit Convention within twenty-four hours of them being signed GrannyGravy13?
I believe even the Road Haulage Association (RHA) and the Freight Transport Association (FTA) have as yet to give any detailed response to the document as far as I am aware.
In that, the RHA Chairman has been "spot on" in all he has predicted throughout this crisis up to this point in time.
So, I think i will await his considered judgment on the situation at the ports in the light of this agreement.
Check your facts Day6.
Our government is entitled to limit EU migration. Other EU countries do but succesive British governments have chosen not to.
EU migrants have contributed far more to our economy and our national life than they have taken from it.
We are not in the Euro and have no obligation to support the Euro.
We currently have the very best deal of any EU nation- not in the Euro or Schengen, and receiving a rebate on our contributions.
We can continue to enjoy this great deal if we rescind Article 50 before 29th Mach next year.
Analysis by economists at the Treasury and at the Bank of England have shown conclusively that -
-Mrs May's deal will leave us worse off than we are now and having to comply with EU regulations without having a say in them.
-A "no-deal" brexit would be utterly catastrophic, costing us almost 10% in GDP and hurting the poorest in our society the hardest.
-Any kind of brexit will leave us, our children and our grandchildren worse off than we are now as full members of the European Union.
I believe that the Common Transit Convention will allow British registered or based aircraft to fly into European Union States but not to then fly onto other EU States. In that, they have to return directly to Britain which will drastically affect their efficiency and operational profitability.
Therefore, I feel that not many airlines will base their operations in Britain in the future affecting thousands of jobs. But of course, Brexiteirs do not care one hoot about people losing their jobs as long as they get their broken Britain.
Easyjet have just moved their HQ to Vienna.
Grandad the UK still has free speech and I like anyone else can comment on a news item.
Brexiteers do not care about jobs Or trading with our closest countries, they only care that immigration from the EU is stopped ( they’re not racist so it’s ok from everywhere else of course) and they can claim to have got back control, despite the fact we had control all along. The illusion that we will have some nebulous “sovereignty” whatever that means just so they can muck up the lives of half the country.
The UK has just been voted 1st in Forbes Magazine for the best country for business, for the second year running.
So I do not think that the UK is a "broken" country, nor do many businesses and business men/women.
