Where is the vote in the Commons going to take us next. Whether remainder or leaver, this is a disgraceful shambles!

PECS Wed 16-Jan-19 15:27:37

I am sure we will leave but I truly think the majority of people will regret the long term changes that leaving will bring.
I really hope I am wrong as I want a positive and harmonious future for my SC and the DGC.

I would vote to remain again.

Jabberwok Wed 16-Jan-19 15:35:30

Hear hear lemon. How sad Grandad that you find fighting the second W.W a subject for merriment! Even sadder that your colleagues who no doubt have little or no knowledge of that war equally find it a subject for amusement. Presumably the loss of life, the suffering, and devastation, the heroism ( do any of you know the meaning of that word?) of VERY young men and women make the whole episode so hysterically funny that you'll all be giggling for weeks!!

Blinko Wed 16-Jan-19 15:39:16

SAW tin or what ever, it doesn't alter the fact that as an Objective 1 area, Cornwall has benefited massively from EU funding over the years.

Blinko Wed 16-Jan-19 15:40:30

Sorry, that should be SEW.

My view is that the way the referendum was set up was 'undemocratic' . In this country we have a Parliamentary Democracy. We vote for MPs to make major decisions on our behalf. It is their job to do the research, find out about the pros & cons etc of the issues they are voting on. Cameron, when deciding to hold a referendum, should have said it was to inform Parliament of the electorates opinion. To help MPs make the decisions we have elected (and pay) them to make. He did not have to make it a decisive referendum. He could have also said a certain %age for one way other the other would trigger a policy response.
As it turned out the country was pretty much split down the middle and did not give either Leave or Remain a clear mandate.
Sadly Cameron was too stupid to build in these safeguards and so we find ourselves with this debacle now! Whatever the next steps, whoever takes the country on... Tory/Labour or other... has first got to clear up a great big steaming pile that was totally avoidable.
It is a no -win situation for whoever leds the next stage.

PECS Wed 16-Jan-19 15:52:21

Leads not leds!

moggie57 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:04:34

yes there should have been a vote . you want to read the list of EU rules.for britain..

moggie57 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:08:19

back in the 1970's when we joined the europeasn common market ,we were not given the option whether we wanted to join or not.i think david cameron should have not resigned and seen this through to the end. instead it has turned into a shambles. even more reason why we should get out.

Lily65 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:09:04

Britain won the war ( hilarious)

humptydumpty Wed 16-Jan-19 16:13:07

Pollaidh 15:12

"Just because the result does not please everyone ,it did please the majority"

that's the majority who voted, not the majority of the electorate.

moggie57 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:14:01

i agree maizie d. had it gone the other way and remained would there be another referendum .no there would not.we don't need to give Europe 93 BILLION TO LEAVE. we need that money to fund our WONDERFUL NHS. and wonderful it is .its FREE.

VIOLETTE Wed 16-Jan-19 16:27:30

Don't let us forget there were an awful lot of British nationals who were unable to vote ...Cameron was always promising to amend the 15 year rule and allow (as all other countries do) any British National living or working abroad, a vote in the UK decisions. I have been shouted down and told that we (as a ex pat ) should NOT be interested in UK Politics as we left the UK ...BUT as UK Pensioners what the UK does DOES affect us ...mostly in a disadvantageous way ...as in ...we are not entitled to the fuel allowance, or much else come to that ...fair enough, we left, as we are often told but SOME left to work in the EU (teachers, scientists, etc) encouraged by reciprocal rights agreements ...it is now likely that they will have to give up their jobs for an EU National ....whereas in the UK ANYONE BUT UK Nationals seems able to have a preference ! Obviously I voted remain ...and it was a very narrow 'victory' for the Leave side ...I hope they will be proud of themselves when it all goes pear shaped ..oh, sorry, as already on here, they are blaming those who voted REMAIN .....sacre bleu !!!!angry

pheasant75 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:41:47

Do your home work on the EU .we voted to leave and we should have left don,t bring in the UK nationals who left the EU has had too much time to make life difficult for the UK
when we have a general election, we cant have another vote like it or not we have voted .

sarahellenwhitney Wed 16-Jan-19 16:47:33

Labaik
The EU, was akin to a marriage / partnership .Not always does the marriage/partnership live up to expectations. Hence divorce /annulment

Do you have at least a degree in economics/politics or some kind of great understanding of the world economy.

You must be very highly educated to think the worlds most experienced economists and leaders of trade are wrong.

The referendum should never have happened the average person is not educated enough to understand the full implications.

Lily65 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:52:05

well said Mom. Cameron was basically like a little boy showing off at a birthday party. The next day when reality dawned it wasn't so funny.

Jabberwok Wed 16-Jan-19 16:52:07

Why is it hilarious that Britain ( and her allies) won the war Lily65? My father was killed in that 'hilarious ' war, five weeks before I was born. My stepfather was a 'guest of the Japanese for 4 1/2 years in that war that some of us now find 'hilarious ' Just curious as to why a devastating war won with such bravery and tenacity by VERY young extremely brave men and women, Violette Zarbo (sp), comes to mind, (ever heard of her?) seem to generate sarcasm or hilarity?!

Momof3 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:56:17

This isn’t a game!! this is people’s lives, jobs, their financial futures.

Pollaidh Wed 16-Jan-19 16:57:47

Agreed HumptyDumpty - I was quoting Lancslass with whom I absolutely disagree. I wanted the David Lammy speech to make my case for me. Just trying to be too clever! Did you watch the video?

Lily65 Wed 16-Jan-19 16:57:54

Yes, I have indeed heard of her. I had relatives who fought too.

No Britain did not win the war. Britain and its allies including of course Polish fighters won the war.

So there is a certain irony in the fact that people from Poland and what was previously the Empire are so despised by some on these forums.

MawBroon Wed 16-Jan-19 17:02:11

Violette Szabo was of course born in Paris (Franco- British)

VIOLETTE Wed 16-Jan-19 17:02:38

Indeed...lest we forget !

POGS Wed 16-Jan-19 17:03:19

Munof3

" The referendum should never have happened the average person is not educated enough to understand the full implications."
----

So referendums should never take place or only well educated people should have the right to vote?

Are you saying only we'll educated people voted Remain?

Do you believe people may not be well educated but hold a lifetime of knowledge through experience, employment etc.

Nonnie Wed 16-Jan-19 17:09:25

nannypiano straight bananas was a hoax, seems you were taken in by it.

Please stop and think everyone. At the moment we don't have to be part of the EU and we have a veto which not everyone has. If we leave and then decide it was a mistake the terms on which we return will be a lot worse than the special privileges we have now.

Sorry I'm going to shout because so far I haven't had an answer even though I have been saying it for months.

WHY ARE LEAVERS WORRIED ABOUT ANOTHER VOTE? IF THEY ARE SO SURE THE MAJORITY AGREE WITH THEM THEY SHOULD BE GLAD OF ANOTHER VOTE TO CONFIRM THEIR OPINIONS

Anan Wed 16-Jan-19 17:28:13

I can see only one resolution. To attempt to renegotiate a deal is pointless. The only Brexit deal on the table is the one defeated by parliament. It should therefore be presented to the people to vote on it. To say this is betraying the referendum result of 2016 is ridiculous. All the electorate (still here) are free to vote again to make their views count. We now also have a large number of 18, 19 year olds not able to vote in 2016. I suggest an initial vote - do we want to stay in the EU or do we want to leave. If the answer is that we want to leave a second vote will have - do we want May's deal or no deal. The people will have the choice and democracy will be seen to be done.
