Surprise announcement from T May this evening.
She will have talks with Corbyn to break the deadlock !
This means that he will have to climb down from the comfy fence now.
If she and her team suggest adding a customs union to her deal, he would be hard pressed not to agree. That could be approved by Parliament.

Only 3 years too late - what’s not to like?

crystaltipps Tue 02-Apr-19 18:47:03

Just highlights how much time they’ve wasted, should have been doing it months ago. Not holding my breath, though.

maryeliza54 Tue 02-Apr-19 18:55:11

Hope she asked him first and is not inviting Chuk ( or Tiny Tears) this time

kittylester Tue 02-Apr-19 18:55:43

In answer to the OP-

Not a cat in hell's chance!!

lemongrove Tue 02-Apr-19 18:58:04

Unsure about that ( should have been done earlier) as we have seen this week, sometimes if you involve other Parties chaos can ensue with endless debating followed by voting no to everything.
A committee of five often achieves more than a committee of fifteen I find.
However, we are where we are, and now Corbyn has a chance to say yes instead.

maryeliza54 Tue 02-Apr-19 18:58:43

I wonder if she’s let the Cabinet out yet and given them their toys back?

maryeliza54 Tue 02-Apr-19 18:59:25

But yes to what?

lemongrove Tue 02-Apr-19 18:59:29

kitty....grin
The cat may be very singed and lose all it’s whiskers but we can always hope!

Riverwalk Tue 02-Apr-19 18:59:41

Well rather late in the day!

Could be attempting to off-load the blame onto him if things don't work out hmm

The announcement was a bit of a damp squib - was hoping for at least a General Election!

maryeliza54 Tue 02-Apr-19 19:00:54

The voting no yesterday was basically done by Tory MPs

cangran Tue 02-Apr-19 19:01:16

Hmm - meeting for over 7 hours and all she can come up with is 'I'll talk to Jeremy and if my deal still doesn't go through we can blame it all on him and the Labour party instead of the useless wasters in government!'?

maryeliza54 Tue 02-Apr-19 19:02:37

Of course thats what she’s up to River

MamaCaz Tue 02-Apr-19 19:02:41

The untrusting part of me fears that there might be more to it than meets the eye, some kind of ulterior motive, paving the way for some kind of blame-shifting if the stalemate continues maybe.

However, I will be extremely pleased to be proved wrong ☺

MamaCaz Tue 02-Apr-19 19:03:29

Ooh, I see I'm not alone.

lemongrove Tue 02-Apr-19 19:04:38

My MP (Conservative) voted yes to everything, a bit of a surprise.

Grandad1943 Tue 02-Apr-19 19:06:28

Theresa May has in all probability totally split the Tory party which may well be for good.

The ERG group and others will never accept a further extension to the leave process along with a much softer Brexit.

Tomorrow's Prime Ministers question time could be quite something to watch and will I feel show the depths of the rift in the Conservative party.

lemongrove Tue 02-Apr-19 19:16:12

It’s a rift that can never heal Grandad1943 so she may well
Go all out for national unity.
I would expect some resignations, but the Party could be all the better for them ( in the future.)
We need concensus now...badly!

Grandad1943 Tue 02-Apr-19 19:31:45

lemongrove, I could not agree with your above post more. However, we will need Theresa May to now approach the talks with Jeremy Corbyn with an open mind and be prepared to concede a number of points.

That said, the last time she spoke to other party leaders and parliamentary groups, they all came out of those talks stating "the door is open, but her mind is closed". That will have to change this time around.

There will be huge pressure on Jeremy Corbyn also, as the policy instruction from the Labour party conference was to first seek a General Election. Should it be that an agreed policy does come about between Corbyn and May, then within the Labour grassroots it may well be seen as Corbyn coming away from that Conference policy.

varian Tue 02-Apr-19 19:43:43

It took a long time for Corbyn to commit the Labour Party to a People's Vote, but he did that yesterday. Can we trust him to hold fast to that commitment?

Fennel Tue 02-Apr-19 19:50:15

At last she seems to have caved in to do the right thing.
Brexit is a much bigger issue than simple party political differences.
Talking to the LP at this stage isn't a sign of weakness, just common sense.
I hope and pray something sensible, and acceptable to the EU, comes out of it be'h.

maryeliza54 Tue 02-Apr-19 20:00:39

She could and should have chosen to do the right thing 3 years ago. She is doing it now out of sheer desperation and in the hope that if it goes pear shaped she can shift the blame onto him. At PMQs she has regularly piled personal abuse and ridicule on him - I just hope he can be the better person because she is a complete failure

Fennel Tue 02-Apr-19 20:09:13

That's what my husband thinks, maryeliza.

maryeliza54 Tue 02-Apr-19 20:24:57

If she were genuinely trying to be statesmanlike, she could have spoken privately with JC and they could have issued a joint statement that they were entering into talks together in the hope etc etc etc. That way she could have given him some ‘status’ as a partner at this critical stage. But no

varian Tue 02-Apr-19 20:27:53

"Corbyn 'very happy' to meet May to discuss compromise plan"

Apparently Corbyn heard about this proposal from watching TV.

That must tell us a lot about the way May regards her opposite number.
