EU Election Results

lemongrove, what about all the disaffected Con and Lab voters, , who have quite obviously decamped to LD and Greens?
It's very obvious in my own area - always a toss up between Con/LD, where the LD and Green votes have shot up at the Con expense, but particularly the LD.
So I don't know why so many people are saying or assuming that disaffected Cons have largely voted Brexit.

On the opposite side, huge swathes of London that were always staunchly Labour have turned very decisively to the LDs.

Funny how those who claimed that 80% of us endorsed Brexit in the silly election called by May are the first to cry foul when experts like Sir John Curtice show that in fact those parties with a sole manifesto of Remain garnered the highest number of votes.

Stop the world, I want to get off! At least we here in Scotland saw sense...

All that this election hs shown is that the country is as divided as ever it has been. The Brexiteers claim they won and want a no-deal Brexit, the Remain parties did well and want another referendum. So the result is just another indication that this argument will continue.

I am delighted that Libdems did so well. They were the only party (apart from Farage et al) who had an honest manifesto, no ifs no buts. Labour and Tory parties got the kicking they deserve but it is unlikely that either of them will learn anything from it. Was interesting to hear Alistair Campbell say he had voted LibDem and Emily Thornberry could barely hide her fury with Corbyn. As for that woman who was ex UKIP, so much for loyalty eh? Couldn't wait to distance herself from them. The one thing that did disappoint me though was the ghastly Widdecombe getting a seat in EU.

Parliament isn’t resisting taking the whole thing back to the people, .labour and conservatives are.

The sight and sound of Ann Widdecombe is enough to spoil my day! But delighted to see Tommy Robinson lose his deposit and wasn't brave enough to stay for the end of the count - coward.

Corbyn got a much-deserved kick up the bum.

Watch Labour do an " about turn " to appease their voters in the next GE ! Tactical.

WWMk2. That just about sums it up. I also think that despite all his bluster and trumpeting ( in his smart well fitted suit paid for by GG54 generous donation) that Farage knows he will not be able to duplicate this 'success' in a GE. He will never be able to screen and interview that many candidates. The handful he gathered up to achieve the additional 4 seats last night are quite a cross section of capabilities and character. And yes, all you Faragistas, before you point out that he doesn't do all the interviews himself, well we all know quite well what happened to UKIP when Farage left.

What happens next? The margin looks similar to 2016 but now we have one new vote Leave party versus a group of established vote Remain parties. Neither has the right to ignore the other.
I hope but without much confidence that the mistakes of 2016 aren't repeated. Different people voting Leave wanted different things. Different people voting Remain had different reasons. Looking further into all these reasons seems the obvious way to break the impasse, but what hope of that when the two largest parties at Westminster are intent only on rebuilding their own support?
Perhaps we could let the newly elected and much changed European Parliament sit for a couple of years? It was probably voter indolence that led to all those Ukip MEPs last time, with their negative stance and 0 contribution.

As the results came in, it was mooted that Scotland, whose SNP got an excellent result (well done ??) might make another push for independence on the back of it.

The result was a boost for Farage but wasn’t the expected landslide, and shows how fed up people are with the state of play in traditional politics. What it doesn’t show is overwhelming support for one thing or another, and no one should pretend it does. If the Brexit party has been led by Anne Widdecombe and Farage has been nowhere to be seen it wouldn’t have done as well with the male, pale and stale voters, it’s a one man band.

North of the Border, I say the sooner we cut ourselves free, the better! It is clear that there is a huge difference in the way Scotland feels compared to the rest of the UK in political terms these days.

Isn’t the message of the EU elections very simple? There is no unambiguous majority for anything without making assumptions about the Conservative and Labour vote. We therefore need to take our time as a country and work out what we actually want and what is actually deliverable.

I saw that on Twitter White and often see him talk simple common sense. But of course some would say you shouldn't take notice of anyone who is an expert at anything.
