Does anyone else think that Jo Brand's "joke" was in bad taste? Talking about the milkshake throwing she said "Why bother with milkshake when you could get some battery acid"

I appreciate she is anti-Brexit and she is entitled to share her views on that but surely this "joke" was a step too far.

Grandyma Fri 14-Jun-19 19:01:47

Hi Brands “joke” was absolutely disgusting and she shouldn’t have said what she did. However, this was not a live broadcast so why did the BBC decide to let this go out and not edit it out??

Helen2244 Fri 14-Jun-19 19:39:13

Jo Brand "joke" very bad taste, could have significant effect on those who would think it is something they should try out.
She deserves to be criticised . No one should say such things. Not sure she cares about what people say or even if her "jokes" rebound. Arrogant.

Jo Brand preceded her 'joke' about substituting milkshake for battery acid by saying some people are very ,very easy to hate.Well I prefer my comedy to be based around anything but hatred. There are so many other ways to raise a laugh.
And with the sneering tone of voice she meant hate.I have laughed many times at her on the past, but this went way too far and I actually gasped when I heard it.I have no respect for her at all

EmilyHarburn Fri 14-Jun-19 20:10:54

The comment is unacceptable. People in the public eye should be vary careful to set a good example. she should not have made this comment.

Calistemon. On the contrary - I have been too busy doing voluntary work in several countries. When my daughter was a tiny baby we lived on a small island in the West Indies with no running water. The local hospital frequently ran out of blood... I learned to get on with it and raised a kind, intelligent daughter. My husband and I were heavily involved with Normandy Veterans for many years: pushing wheelchairs, escorting elderly people to the lavatory, attending church services, funerals and Remembrance Sunday events. I have dined with homeless people and lords and ladies. No doubt, I have also imbibed a fair amount of Champagne. In my mind this is living life to the full! Not a hedonist, just an ordinary wife and mother.

farview Fri 14-Jun-19 21:22:34

I always liked her...but no more..we only have to remember the people who have suffered life changing injuries due to acid attacks..not funny Jo..not at all...

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 22:26:17

Well done, Glammy57, that is living life to the full in a good way.

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 22:31:55

perhaps you should try getting out of your living room and interacting with those who may have a different opinion than your own. Personally, I have found that people who have a social conscience are very kind, they don’t sit behind a keyboard and complain; they go out and try to improve the lives of those less fortunate than themselves!
However, I'd just like to add that, unless you know lemongrove and what she does or did in life, there was no need for that remark about getting out of her living room and interacting with others.

Really, we do not know anyone's circumstances unless they tell us - posters could be dipping in here occasionally in between their busy lives helping others and doing charitable works, or they could regard GN as a lifeline because they are unable to leave their homes due to disability.

The police are not taking any action. Common sense prevails.

loopyloo Sat 15-Jun-19 07:13:02

Surely not just bad taste but an incitement to violence. Yes the BBC should have edited it out.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 15-Jun-19 07:31:36

Ms Brand made a very silly and thoughtlessmistake in what she said, she has apologised, the police say there is no action to be taken.

The pearl clutching and moral panic can now cease over this matter.

Anyone like now to discuss Farage incitement to violence?

Now would anyone like to

Ironmaiden Sat 15-Jun-19 07:40:56

If you listen to the joke in context it wasn’t that bad. She made it very clear that she meant it as outrageous humour and said she wasn’t actually going to do it, it was just a fantasy. I have fantasies about what I would do to right wing politicians but wouldn’t dream of saying them out loud let alone doing them! But I am not a comedian, she is. The show she was on encourages close to the line comedy.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 15-Jun-19 07:55:34

ironmaiden right. Comedy is often supposed to shock, it has ever been thus. And I hope continues to shock because we will have truly come to a serious situation if it is stopped.

oldgimmer1 Sat 15-Jun-19 08:10:25

So - Jo Brand, a subversive and controversial comedian, makes a close-to-the bone joke on a programme that, let's face it, very few people have heard of, let alone listen to.

An attention- seeking politician takes offence and rebrands (no pun intended) the joke in a tweet. Said politician is no stranger to causing offence himself.

And this is headline news? Really?

Day6 Sat 15-Jun-19 08:27:46

An attention- seeking politician takes offence

As did most of the UK when it hit the news! How can you make so light of it?

Why shouldn't he and the rest of us be horrified? Jo Brand is the culprit here, and she knows it. We know it too.

I cannot be the only one who has noticed a certain section of GN posters will deflect away from the matter in hand to disparage anyone but Jo Brand even if their 'crimes' slipped under the radar - ie: didn't make headline news - as Brand's has.

Makes you wonder.

Throwing acid at people because you 'hate' them. How can anyone defend the indefensible? hmm

Whitewavemark2 Sat 15-Jun-19 09:08:35

Still pearl clutching I see.??

Anniebach Sat 15-Jun-19 09:15:39

Kenny Everet said on tv ‘Kick Michael Foot’s stick away ‘

It was thought to be very funny

WadesNan Sat 15-Jun-19 09:19:40

Jo Brand makes a tasteless and offensive comment in a public broadcast and those on the left come out in droves to protect her "free speech".

Jim Davidson posts a tweet about Khan having ruined his home town and is bombarded with abusive comments (Spot the difference)

Gonegirl Sat 15-Jun-19 09:24:19

Whitewavemark2 Define "pearl clutching".

eazybee Sat 15-Jun-19 09:34:02

According to 'one insider' (un named) from the BBC, 'Jo Brand is a much-loved comedian and part of the Radio 4 family - she will continue to be so, and will continue to appear in our programmes.'
So that's all right then; your licence fee is in safe hands.

Callistemon Sat 15-Jun-19 10:12:31

oldgimmer the BBC made it headline news!!

Callistemon Sat 15-Jun-19 10:17:26

your licence fee is in safe hands grin

No wonder over 75s are going to lose their free licences - the BBC wouldn't be able to afford to pay all these multi-millionaire "entertainers" otherwise!

maxdecatt Sat 15-Jun-19 10:21:49

Wavemark. So comedy has always been meant to shock. Really? True comedians do not set out to shock, their craft is to amuse. Types like Jo Brand have no real craft, they rely on smut and obscenity and the laughs they get are, in essence, nervous because the audience does not know how to react. She is a master of manipulation with her self imporant smugness feeding the baying mob with inflammatory remarks. It only takes one idiot among the many that "!love" her to spark an attack that destroys a persons life. LOCK HER UP.

Jabberwok Sat 15-Jun-19 10:23:00

Not by me Annie!?

Labaik Sat 15-Jun-19 10:55:59

'She is a master of manipulation with her self imporant smugness feeding the baying mob with inflammatory remarks. It only takes one idiot among the many that "!love" her to spark an attack that destroys a persons life. LOCK HER UP.' Bit like Farage then [imo]...
