Does anyone else think that Jo Brand's "joke" was in bad taste? Talking about the milkshake throwing she said "Why bother with milkshake when you could get some battery acid"
I appreciate she is anti-Brexit and she is entitled to share her views on that but surely this "joke" was a step too far.
Nasty no-joke woman.
Police to take no further action over Jo Brand encouraging people to throw acid over those they do not like.
Well that tells us all that there are no longer any boundaries ...if you preface your remark with "This is comedy". That means you can insult, injure and murder people of colour, religion, gender, anyone you do not agree with ...the list is endless...but just remember to say that you are a comedian and as such are above the law.
Come to think of it, the Metropolitan Police (who are refusing to prosecute Brand) are past masters at skipping around the law.....like they did when they murdered Jean Charles Demenez at Stockwell station....and dozens of other innocents since. Their excuse "We thought he was a terrorist" and lied through their back teeth about him as they tried to cover up their crime.... "He was wearing a heavy coat" (he was actually wearing a T-shirt, no coat), "He jumped over the barriers"... but CCTV shows him doing no such thing...he just walked into the station, went through the barriers and behaved normally. So lies from start to finish....the result.... he is dead with 8 bullets in his head and the anonymous killers ("officers" in the police) are rewarded with holidays, and they promote the one that ordered the killing (Cressida Dick) by making her their chief. In the real world the murderers would be locked up and so would the gangmasters (senior officers) that ordered the killing. Funny old world. You can bet that since she ordered the execution/murder Cressida definitely does not travel to Brazil. I wonder how long before Brazil travels to her? Has she told her female lover to keep an eye out for visiting Brazilians when they come calling?
Labaik: Farage has nevcer incited anyone to physically harm anyone. Stop making excuses for the like of Jo Brand.
May 2016 'If people feel that voting doesn't change anything then violence is the next step' Farage. Can you explain to me why that comment will not incite people to violence And, I'm not making excuses for Jo Brand, just pointing out that there are other people far more dangerous than her out there....
max, in an ideal world what action would you have liked?
She went too far, yes, but I'm sure lots of us would have liked to see something worse thrown than milkshake, just not that much worse! Comedy often exaggerates and unfortunately she chose a bad alternative in her exaggeration. I hope this error doesn't finish her career as I think she is a very funny and perceptive comedienne. And yes, I do generally agree with her political views and would still probably have laughed.
ELVIVE: In a ideal world the police would be accountable once it was proven they lied to cover up their crime. The anonymous offiders identified and put on trial for murder along with their senior officer ...and locked up.
Jocork: So you would "still have probably laughed" at the someone havig battery acid thrown over them. You are SICK.
maxdecatt the police do not prosecute anyone, that is the decision of the CPS. Police gather evidence which is passed to CPS who decide whether or not to proceed. The police are often very disappointed that cases are not pursued or the charges are dropped to much lower categories.
While I'm disgusted by the "joke" especially as it was recorded on the day NF had the milkshake thrown at him, I don't think it warrants prosecution, and would be unlikely to secure a conviction.
Sorry Mad, My question was related to Jo Brand ?
I don't really see how you could make saying ill timed and potentially offensive things illegal?
There would hardly be anybody left out of jail.
BJ and Jim Davidson would be early casualties.
Jannipat. You are wrtong. The Metroplitan Police Service (The MPS, or the Met) decided not to take any further action....that is they themselves decided not to refer the matter to the CPS, so the CPS never actually had to make a decision. That tells us that the Met support Jo Brand and protect her from the attention of the CPS, so her incitement to violence goes unchecked and opens the door to other rabble rousers like her. Says it all about the boys in blue, does it not? No doubt the next time a gang of terrorists run amok with knives and call it "Comedy" the Met will stand by and applaud their artistic endeavours in the name of edgey comedy. LOCK HER UP.
These chants of 'lock her up' remind me, worryingly of Trump's 'drain the swamp'....[and seem to appeal to the same sort of people...]
I recently saw Annette Fagon who was both funny and offensive. Should she be locked up?
How would this work? Would there be a sort of 2 minute test like an X factor audition with a panel ,who could press a go to jail buzzer?
Of course she shouldn't be 'locked up' - what she said was not funny and was quite offensive imo, considering the number of people whose lives have been destroyed by acid attacks, - but she has apologised.
Never heard of Annette Fagon, she is obviously not as high-profile as JB.
Some of the comments on Farages twitter page are interesting eg one of his fans saying acid should be thrown over Jo Brand because it might improve her looks....
No, she's not. I just mentioned it because it was recent, offensive and funny. It is possible to be the last 2 simultaneously.
Well, I suppose you could say that the late great Dave Allen was offensive, but that was about the Catholic church, not about acid attacks on people.
I can see the difference.
A charge of incitement to violence has clear guidelines and this referral obviously did not reach the bar over which a successful prosecution is likely to be achieved.
Different officers on a different day may well have reached a different conclusion, as we do on here.
She (JB) clearly did not advocate throwing an acid filled drink at anyone. The suggestion that acid would have had more impact than milkshake was a very stupid remark but did not breach those guidelines.
I am not an admirer of Jo Brand but her earlier comedy was funny at the time, if a little near the knuckle.
Jo Brand has twisted her so-called apolgy. Most on here have taken her apology at face value....exactly as she inteneded they should. But she then included a caveat to the apology when she said she made a mistake. THe caveat was, "I do not think I made a mistake". Those extra words were omitted in most media reports, but not by all.
So you really need to ask yourself....if she does not think she made a mistake it must mean that she believes she was right to suggest throwing acid over people she does not like. I repeat. LOCK HER UP.
if we lock up everyone whose humour we dont like where do we draw the line? I remember (bad taste) jokes about Biafrans in the 80's and didn't Joan Rivers make jokes about the Twin Towers days after the event .I dont recall anyone yelling LOCK HER UP .The prisons are overcrowded as it is we'd need to build hundreds more to accomodate the bad joke tellers. She wasn't inciting violence ,she was on a programme thats known for being near the knuckle on humour and her audience laughed .
If the remark had been aimed at Corbyn, would the same posters still be saying ‘pearl clutching’ on here? I think we all know the answer would be a no ( sometimes the hypocrisy on GN is astounding.)
I thought it has been pointed out that it was a comment about milkshake throwing in general, not necessarily at Farage? And I still don't think anyone has condoned it; just pointed out that lots of people do and say pretty bad things but they don't get the publicity that this has.
It was a stupid thing to day. She has apologised. It would be utterly insane to lock her up.
Oh for Gods sake let's try and keep Corbyn ( he's rubbish, he's a Marxist, I hate him) out of this " discussion"
You cannot lock people up because they say something unfunny/mistimed/stupid.
I found the opening 3 or 4 minutes of Fleabag offensive, uncomfortable viewing. Guess what? I switched off.
