33 days to go .... What’s the Brexit plan?

Something’s afoot!

The SNP’s embrace – with a public show of reluctance – for the idea of sending Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street shows the mounting tetchiness among Remainers that somehow Boris will be able to get around the Benn Act, and thereby leave the UK hurtling towards a no deal by the end of next month unless they take action.

What are your thoughts on what’s going on?

Labaik Mon 21-Oct-19 11:32:26

..strange that people don't believe first hand accounts but believe what they read in the press sad instead....

lemongrove Mon 21-Oct-19 11:36:51

Labaik anyone can put what they like on FB ( as am sure you already know) anything printed in newspapers should be verified beforehand.True, some papers bend the truth, but
By reading various sources something approximating the truth if the situation can be found.
You are as guilty as a person reading something in say, The Sun ( and no other newspaper) and insisting it’s the truth, by believing a person on FB.Ironic really.

Sky news this morning also indicated that Jacob Reece Mogg and Andrea Leadson had an unnecessary police guard. Looks like a stunt to me, especially as Jacob Reece Mogg was again using one of his children to make a gesture.

lemongrove Mon 21-Oct-19 11:41:00

It was only unnecessary because nothing happened to them surrounded by police officers.....if they hadn’t been, it could well have been necessary!

Labaik Mon 21-Oct-19 11:48:31

You forget, lemongrove, that I was there on Saturday. A line of police, at one point, marched through part of the crowd where I was [trying to walk to the embankment through crowds that were so dense it took us an hour to move several hundred yards] and they moved like a knife through butter. The Mogg child was never in any danger with police like that around. There is also a video of the event but I don't think I can put it on here [if I could I would] but I suppose it's a] either fabricated or b]I'm lying. I also fine it a bit sad that people on here are so sympathetic about JRM and yet, when we were verbally abused on our way back from the anti proroguing parliament rally [which did, in the end turn out to be a rally upholding democracy ] I don't recall getting any sympathy from people on here. Maybe I should have taken a small child with me to get some sympathy....

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 11:59:35

The video is on YouTube. I've watched it a few times now. I can hear people shout "No surrender" (the slogan of the EDL) and "Jacob nice one" and "Jacob keep fighting for us". It's true that some people were shouting "Shame on you", but nobody was threatening them. There were EU flags in the background, but also St George (England) flags nearer to where Rees Mogg was. I don't think this quite as simple as people have made out. There is also the question of why he took his son and why he didn't use a car as other MPs did.

Going bake to the title of this thread. Does anyone know what the DUP actually want? I must admit I was surprised to hear they are not going to back staying in the customs union. It seems to Slovenia their problems.

Going bake back to the title of this thread. Does anyone know what the DUP actually want? I must admit I was surprised to hear they are not going to back staying in the customs union. It seems to Slovenia solve their problems.

MaizieD Mon 21-Oct-19 12:19:51

It seems to Slovenia their problems.

Isn't autocorrect fun grin I assume you meant 'solve', GGMK2?

DUP want to be the same as GB when it comes to Brexit and apparently don't care for backstabbers..

Labaik Mon 21-Oct-19 12:21:12

If JRM was so worried about his son's safety why is he smiling? I feel sorry for the child, though.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 21-Oct-19 12:46:20

The auto correct is driving me mad Maizie. Usually I use the laptop except for short periods but I'm not in my craft-room today. I can make enough mistakes without its help!

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 12:57:17

GracesGran My understanding is that if NI stays in the customs union, it will be separated from mainland UK, which the DUP doesn't want. The mainland UK will be able to export to NI, but if goods are then to be exported or become part of something which is going to be exported, they will need to be checked and tariffs will need to be paid. Therefore, there will effectively be a customs barrier between mainland UK and NI. I think they see it as a stepping stone to a unified Ireland.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 21-Oct-19 13:27:23

I understood there might be an amendment adding a customs union for all the UK today, but the DUP are not prepared to back it although, I would have thought, that would solve the challenges of a hard boarder. They have never suggested an answer to this Gordian knot of a problem have they?

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 13:43:14

There isn't an answer - that's the problem.

The DUP doesn't want to be linked more to the RoI than it is to the rest of the UK, but they don't have much support in the border areas, which will be most affected by Brexit.

There won't be a hard border between NI and the RoI, but there will be a border between NI and the rest of the UK.

Apparently, there was a demo in Gibraltar against Brexit over the weekend, but I don't think it was reported in the British MSM.

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 13:45:31

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a customs union for the whole of the UK. There can't be one, if NI and the RoI are going to be allowed to trade freely.

Labaik Mon 21-Oct-19 14:17:05

No; Gibraltar doesn't get mentioned at all; never was.

MaizieD Mon 21-Oct-19 14:36:33

Nice to see Jacob Rees-Mogg get into his chauffeur driven limo this morning outside No10 to be driven to House of Commons. His son was not with him, so presumably he was afraid of doing the walk alone.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 21-Oct-19 14:51:57

I should have listened more carefully growstuff but I understood they meant the UK staying in the EU Customs Union.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 21-Oct-19 14:52:57

He fools people Maizie. He is a bad man.

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 15:05:54

I don't think the ERG and the Brexit mob would ever accept the UK staying in the customs union. It was ruled out fairly in this whole sorry saga.

varian Thu 24-Oct-19 19:20:11

The good news is that all the folk who told us categorically that we would be leaving the EU on 31st October, just like those who said we would definitely leave on some date in March and some other date in April, are wrong yet again.

The majority of British people have rumbled them. These people are wrong about everything. We should stop brexit and Remain in the EU as most of us have wanted for more than two years.

Chestnut Thu 24-Oct-19 20:14:48

varian - by saying this often enough on these boards I suppose you hope some people will believe you.

GracesGranMK3 Thu 24-Oct-19 22:12:56

Meow.

humptydumpty Thu 24-Oct-19 22:18:45

The same could be said of you chestnut. I'm with varian.

This meltdown is symbolic of the waste that is Brexit.
