ALPHABETICAL FOOD AND DRINK (Jan 26)
Am I the only one who is sick and tired of Brexit. I am not into politics or wanting a debate. I just want things to get back to normal
Oops - wrong thread! Sorry.
Will re-post.
Answered most of your points but very willing to see others step in.
Meantime........
Non-auditing of accounts?
Cf protection of tax havens by opting out of eu regulation/ financial misrepresentation eg red bus figures.
Tampon tax?
All vat receipts are redirected by Holyrood to benefit women's charities (and free sanitary protection for students.)
Hoovers with a bit less 'suck power'?
Frankly my dear I don't give a damn!
The EU is strangling the UK in burdensome regulations:
like the rule that you can’t recycle a teabag, or that children under eight cannot blow up balloons, or the limits on the power of vacuum cleaners, or VAT on tampons.
Oh, goodness, Ug!
Recycling teabags? Is this some sort of a joke or do you seriously want to dry out the teapowder and the little bags for reuse?
Most teabags are virtually unrecyleable (i.e don't biodgrade) because they contain plastic. Not only non-biodegradeable but also not very healthy as they release plastic particles into your tea when immersed in boiling water...
www.countryliving.com/uk/create/food-and-drink/news/a3291/plastic-tea-bags-environment/
I can't actually find an EU directive which forbids recycling them. Can you point me at one?
The EU doesn't ban children under eight from blowing up balloons. Here, straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak:
europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-11-698_en.htm
(Anyway, if they did, how on earth would they police it)
I have a very efficient 100 watt vacuum cleaner and an 800 watt one that would suck you into its dust bin if it got the chance.
What does the EU have to say about vacuums:

Tampon tax?
EU voted to allow member states to set their own VAT rates on sanitary products in 2016, including zero rating:

Corruption in the EU set up. They haven’t had their accounts audited for nigh on 20 years.
They have had their accounts audited every year since 1995

Where do you get all this inaccurate information from, Ug?
I think probably nearly everyone is frustrated and anxious about the current state of affairs.
However, in my view anyway, the fact that this issue has created so much uncertainty and unease indicates that a final decision should not be hurried through just because some people are bored and uninterested.
Thank you maizie I wonder if we have, in our own little ways, assuaged some of UG's concerns?
When I've asked leavers for answers I have never received succinct and relevant answers within minutes!
Yes eloethan just as Kenneth Clarke has been saying for months.
The UK could keep the money it currently sends to the EU
For every £1 we give the EU they let us have 38p back
And it is calculated that for every £1 we 'give' to the EU we gain £10 in export income.
Also, if we leave, will have to duplicate all the agencies and regulatory bodies which we now share with the EU 27, which means we will have to spend probably more money than our current share of the EU costs (economies of scale in play at present)
And, part of our contribution can be counted as a contribution to the UK's annual overseas aid budget. That will have to be repatriated.
You do realise that our contribution to the EU is less than 2% of the UK's total annual budget?
And, FFS, if I join a club and pay an annual subscription I don't expect to get any of it back in cash...
Well, they’ll have a few days to look at it....
Hopefully the deal will be accepted by the majority of MP’s and we can move on to the next stage of the negotiations, without all the uncertainty.
I wonder if we have, in our own little ways, assuaged some of UG's concerns?
I doubt it, I really doubt it, mcem. I, and others, have been debunking this nonsense for over 3 years now, but it falls on completely deaf ears...
And, FFS, if I join a club and pay an annual subscription I don't expect to get any of it back in cash...
Just as well MaizieD because other EU countries are definitely the beneficiaries already - Poland was the biggest net recipient of the EU budget (getting more back than it contributed in the first place), followed by Greece, Romania, Hungary and Portugal.
Luxembourg and Belgium, two of the richest EU countries, are also on the list of EU budget net recipients, because they receive a high proportion of the funding for administration as many EU institutions, such as the Commission and the European Parliament, are based there.
(From a BBC website)
The tampon tax nearly derailed Boris’ deal. Negotiations went on until 2am one day this week, discussing VAT implications for N.I,
Finally it got resolved which will ensure Northern Irish women can benefit from a zero percent VAT rate on the sanitary products after Brexit.
Michel Barnier told EU27 ambassadors on Wednesday evening that VAT was the outstanding issue holding up an agreement with the UK after negotiators worked through the night and into the early morning.
But the EU's chief negotiator did not reveal the central role of the Tampon Tax, which, thanks to EU law, forces British women to pay a 5% VAT rate on sanitary products.

There's none so blind as those who will not see.
On another note for another poster.
It's the voltage not the wattage that matters in vacuum cleaners.
Don't be a sucker
Which as I pointed out earlier is used for the benefit of women's charities North of the border because Holyrood chose to do that. What has Tory WM done to help?I
Struggling a bit UG!
Tampon tax?
All vat receipts are redirected by Holyrood to benefit women's charities (and free sanitary protection for students.)
That might be all well and good for some but I ask why? Why should I pay a tax for my own sanitary protection and them pay again for someone elses effectively? When I was a student I never went without a tampax or pad. Something isnt right in this. I question the premise on which this notion of period poverty is based. So why should I pay for Hollyrood or anyone else for that matter?
Indeed why have VAT. Its an EU tax.
Hoovers with a bit less 'suck power'?
Frankly my dear I don't give a damn!
Speak for yourself it matters to me. I know many others who this matters to as well. Such rules are not popular amongst many .
So what is your motivation Ug, for such passion?
Tampons, Boris, Polish Builders?
Seriously, i just don't get it
Some people will never get it grapefruitpip. For others it is quite clear. You will just have to live with it. Its your problem I think
Amongst many other concerns gfp and what’s wrong with that? I gave some examples. There are many more, but at this stage it’s boring to list them all.
It doesn’t matter if you get it or not grapefpip......all that you need to do is to accept it, as the democratic vote was to leave the EU.
But the EU's chief negotiator did not reveal the central role of the Tampon Tax, which, thanks to EU law, forces British women to pay a 5% VAT rate on sanitary products.
See what I mean, mcem? Post a link which says that in 2016 member states were given the power to VAT rate sanitary products however they liked and Ug's still going on about VAT on tampons...
Perhaps the UK government didn't choose to change the rate...
Just as well MaizieD because other EU countries are definitely the beneficiaries already - Poland was the biggest net recipient of the EU budget (getting more back than it contributed in the first place), followed by Greece, Romania, Hungary and Portugal.
The whole point of the payments to poorer EU member states was to help them to invest to improve their economies. Which is in the interests of the whole EU (including us) as they become better markets for our goods and services. Clearly rather too altruistic for the penny pinchers...
And as their economies improve they contribute more to the EU, contributions being a percentage of GDP, and need less financial support..
Why do you think we give aid to countries outside the EU? It's not pure benevolence on the part of the UK..
I accept, I don't care
mcem - ~I've answered this point on several occasions. The accounts have been audited - they have been qualified for minor errors, concerning expense claims. There has been no suggestion of fraud, just organisations finding it difficult to comply with some of the documentation. Mind you I might add a qualification of my own - a certain Farage who has overclaimed expenses and has had to repay monies to the EU.
April rose - I'm very sorry to read about your husband but surely his problems have been exacerbated by austerity over the last ten years. The figures coming out, seemingly every day, show what dire straits the mental health services are in.
As regards the young people getting degrees but there are no jobs, there are all sorts of reasons for that. The conversions of polytechnics to universities and the resulting thousands of young people chasing hundreds of jobs. This has also led to the reduction in apprenticeships.
Back in the 60s my younger brother decide to become a set designer. He went to art school for 5 years - there was at that time only one course with about 13 students on it - but even then not enough jobs for those students. Now hundreds of youngsters do a similar course but there aren't hundreds of jobs for trainees.
