Well

Starmer is talking to the DUP in the hope that a new alliance can be formed which will, it is hoped, force the government into a softer departure or/and confirmatory vote on whether to leave at all.
The softer departure will take the form of a customs union, which is obviously attractive to the DUP.

It is thought that there is enough cross party support for a CU. amendment.

Johnson is trying to rush through all stages of the Brexit legislation before the EU summit pencilled in for next week, but parliament may reject this rushed timetable because it doesn’t give sufficient time to scrutinise such a hugely important bill, and there will be a vote on this tomorrow. It is hoped that parliament will insist on giving itself more time over the extended transition period.

Johnson is attempting to get parliamentary backing for his Brexit deal in a straight yes/no vote today. Hoping to show support for his agreement. But it is expected that a Bercow will enforce parliamentary rules that say that parliament can’t keep bringing the same vote back, as was voted on, on Saturday and Johnson lost.

One suspicion is that if Johnson can get a meaningful vote through he will withdraw his extension letter.

Anyone willing to go and pick the rotting fruit and vegetables for 2p. a fortnight?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 21-Oct-19 15:56:42

As an aside. The illegality of leave U.K. and it’s flouting electoral rules is being brought up in the QS..

That’s Johnson, Gove etc.

Ten days to go, go, go.....!

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Oct-19 15:59:35

Time for a GE as soon as possible, UK cannot continue to be governed by "Bercow the Burke"

Whitewavemark2 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:03:20

Oh dear gg13 the tone has just dropped.

Labaik Mon 21-Oct-19 16:03:27

You mean Bercow who has a sound knowledge of parliamentary procedure unlike the PM who either doesn't understand it or, if he does, thinks he can just ignore it....

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:11:39

We have a parliament which is not able to pass any legislation at all.

MPs from both sides are only interested in "grandstanding".

A speaker who is enjoying every last minute he has in the limelight. He might have commenced his career in "The Chair" as impartial, but he is certainly not ending his career as impartial.

The only way out of this stalemate is to have a GE, but Jeremy Corbyn and Jo Swinsom know that they will lose seats and are running scared.

Is it any wonder that the general public are sick of the lot of them?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:13:34

The Tories have only themselves to blame.

On Saturday the government could have accepted the Letwin amendment, but they were too petulant/puerile/pigheaded to do so.

The could have brought the bill to division but didnt - they flounced out.

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 16:15:20

Exactly!

Bercow's a star! grin grin grin

Whitewavemark2 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:18:21

Bercow, just like the judges is following the law.

From some posts you might make the judgement that some people would prefer the law was flouted

Whitewavemark2 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:25:33

Where’s Johnson?

MaizieD Mon 21-Oct-19 16:27:46

We have a parliament which isn't passing legislation because the legislation they are being asked to pass is crap and contrary to the national interest.

They are well able to do this because there is a minority government; which is doing its best to ignore and subvert the British Constitution (as it was under the previous PM, BTW). Do let me remind you, once again, GG13 that Parliament is Sovereign, not the government. That is why governments usually comprise MPs from the party which has the over all majority in Parliament, it's enormously helpful in getting their legislation through.

You only think the Speaker is not impartial because things are not going your way. But you have to understand that the Speaker is on the side of Parliament, not the government. The Speaker's job is to prevent the abuse of government power and maintain the Sovereignty of the House of Commons.

We'll have a GE when JC is good and ready. He's not going to indulge the charlatan from No. 10.

Apparently, Bercow pulled out a note sent to him by Rees-Mogg when he (Bercow) stopped an attempt by May for a meaningful vote in similar circumstances. Rees-Mogg in March told Bercow: 'May I say how delighted I am that you have decided to follow precedent'

Whitewavemark2 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:32:42

I have it on good authority that Johnson can be found in a ditch - place unknown.

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 16:35:51

I'm not sick of the lot of them. I have the greatest respect for some of them, including Starmer, Grieve, Bercow and some others. The only ones I'm sick of are Johnson and his sycophants.

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 16:36:32

Don't be silly Whitwave. You know he doesn't keep his promises.

growstuff Mon 21-Oct-19 16:37:16

He's holed up with Cummings, thinking of the next stage in the cunning plan.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:37:38

MaizieD thank you yet again for your patronising lecture on Governmental Procedures and the sovereignty of the H of Cs.

GillT57 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:42:21

A few people who are bleating on about 'the will of the people' and about democracy in general need reminding that this country is being held hostage by a minority group of MPs within a less than minority government. Doesn't sound much like democracy to me. Sadly, this idiocy within parliament is being aided and abetted by the most ineffectual, weak, opposition leader Corbyn. What a mess it all is, and bloody Cameron should hang his head.

Peonyrose Mon 21-Oct-19 16:44:18

?

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Oct-19 16:54:16

GillT57 agree re Cameron, he was a coward to walk away.

Urmstongran Mon 21-Oct-19 17:04:40

More than a coward GG13 he showed he only wanted to lead and represent the Remainers of our country. The rest of us were of no account to him so he walked (humming as he left).
?

MaizieD Mon 21-Oct-19 17:05:27

I'm glad you enjoyed it, GG13.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 21-Oct-19 17:32:07

Urmstongran beginning to think it is only those who voted remain that matter, according to many posters on here.

Nonnie Mon 21-Oct-19 17:35:52

GG13 may I make an alternative suggestion? Perhaps the posters on here reflect the 'will of the people'? If so many of us share our views then it is possible that we are right unless you think we are all stupid? Just a thought
