So much evidence out there being ignored by the racist press

And yes, as a Jewish person I was also offended by the coded antisemitism the Tories and their media allies used to attack Ed Miliband. Not just the bacon sandwich, by the way. More the constant references to ‘north London’ and the fact he was going to ‘stab Britain in the back’.

I have never thought of 'letter box' as an obscene word.

When I drop in my Christmas cards I'll remember that.

EllaKeat Wed 27-Nov-19 19:55:06

Callistemon 'letter box' used correctly is not offensive, but if you are slim and I called you a stick insect, or plump and I called you a blob, then stick insects and blobs would be offensive in those circumstances, would they not?
Not the best comparitors, but my battery is down to 3%, so thinking quickly!

Nught everyone - be kind to each other ?

Penguins are lovely too, wonderful creatures.

However, I don't think that offensive and obscene have quite the same meaning.

Letter box and penguins are not obscene terms.

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 19:58:03

But not obscene.

Chestnut, Yes lots of threads attacking Boris, Farage and the Tories. It just proves how fanatical and aggressive the far left are. Sure thing luv. It's the left-wing that are wrong, not those with neo Nazi links (Farage) or making PUBLIC racist comments (Boris).

Baggs, I did some looking up and found that I had heard previously about ultra orthodox Jewish women wearing wigs because of a rule about covering their hair. (Yup, NOT for fashion or practical reasons) I don't recall hearing about the two fridges thing but I expect it's to do with keeping different kinds of food separate, (Keeping kosher).

No one's worrying about wig wearing Jewish ladies. Plenty of 'em in Gateshead parks where I spend a lot of time with DG.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:11:33

Because, Chestnut, it's personal choice (head/face covering).

Who the f**k is a racist, wife beating man, who impregnates women and then leaves them with the child, taking on NO fatherly responsibility, to tell ANY woman what she should or should not put on her head?

IF the Tories want to take the morally high ground over non existent anti semitism in the LP, they should have picked a whiter than white (pun intended) leader.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 20:13:24

I went to a school where nuns wore full-length clothing and headwear. But their faces were not covered. The requirement or choice, wherever it comes from, for women (always just women, never men) to cover their faces as well as everything else, is weird. It is hard to understand. I do understand the liberation idea about being covered/hidden by a voluminous garment. But faces and facial expressions for human beings, for all primates, a extremely important. Face coverings, except for protection in extreme conditions, are weird.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:16:44

So you're deciding HAIR covering is OK but face isn't?

It is and should be, for the individual to chose. Not THAT difficult to full-face slap. Botox, thick foundation, false eyelashes, caked on lipstick, fake tan changing skin colour from pale white to darker than Afro Carribean. Still totally covered. Plenty of Geordie women walking around like that. No one complaining.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:17:12

Grr, NOT difficult. DIFFERENT.

Baggs Wed 27-Nov-19 20:20:22

Yes.

I wear head coverings, i.e. hats, all the time outside. As did almost everyone until very modern times. That's about warmth or keeping the sun off or just for looks.

No-one is complaining about those other things you mention, gagajo, because facial communication and recognition, vitally important to all primates, is still possible.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 20:24:13

wife beating man

I do not think there has ever been a hint of physical violence against his wife, although other accusations could be made against BJ.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:37:09

Eh? Don't you remember the screaming, thumping and throwing out of his PARTNER (maybe not wife) recently in the media?

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 20:38:22

Oh! I thought she threw him out because he spilt red wine on a white sofa. It was her doing the screaming.
Quite right too, however, I would have had him scrubbing the sofa all night.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:40:13

Oh yes. Very poor expression there (mine)! Sorry.

GagaJo Wed 27-Nov-19 20:42:19

Not so sure I believe the excuse given though, given his track record.

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 20:47:46

oh, I don't know
You should have heard me when DH spilt red wine on our new sofa.

CoolioC Wed 27-Nov-19 21:04:29

Now Gonegirl do we still have free speech? It appears the press or one person or another can’t go a day without being offended by someone else. With everyone asking one another to apologise. Smacks of playground stuff to me, causes me to laugh daily. Whatever happened to the British sense of humour when we were able to laugh at ourselves.

A burka can’t look like a letterbox, simply because they are red.

lemongrove Wed 27-Nov-19 21:11:32

Gaga you had the wine spilling episode all wrong but were still wading in there all guns blazing.
Too much aggression going on all round.hmm

Gonegirl Wed 27-Nov-19 22:05:56

I just wanna know how she got that foreign writing on here. It's quite clever and she never strikes me as being very clever confused

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 22:16:55

Google translate, copy and paste!

Callistemon Wed 27-Nov-19 22:18:22

I could do it myself but I haven't worked out how to copy and paste on this new device as I'm not that clever
grin

Chestnut Thu 28-Nov-19 11:22:48

The Arabic phrase which grapefruitpip posted means 'God willing'.
Why she/he posted that in Arabic I don't know, or what God is willing I don't know. Just trying to look clever I suppose.

Callistemon Thu 28-Nov-19 12:54:56

A colleague of mine many years ago used to use that phrase every night when we used to say a cheery 'Good night, see you tomorrow' but he said it in English.

I see no need to start using Arabic on GN, there may be a few people who can read it, but most can't.

Prynhawn Da smile

Callistemon Thu 28-Nov-19 12:55:35

I meant to put a wink

Gonegirl Thu 28-Nov-19 13:21:43

That's a new one. "Message deleted as it quotes deleted post". Haven't seen that one before.
