As a bit of amusement I was trying to work ut how long Boris will stick at the job of PM. He's not big on commitment. I think he'll want to go down in history as the man who did Brexit, but I don't think he'll wnt to stick around afterwards. I think he'll be getting himself bounced up to the H of Lords once it's done. Anyone else want to guess at how long he'll last?

Johnson has a huge majority; his party is now full of fresh faced yes men and women. Most of those who opposed him on both sides of parliament have gone. All he needs now is for his counterpart, Trump to be re elected. He's here for the duration....[heaven help us]

I agree with Lemongrove Urmstongran and others. Cometh the hour cometh the man. I think Boris will want to be remembered as more than just the saviour of Brexit. I see him lasting at least five years, maybe ten. He will want to leave a good legacy, but keeping everyone happy is never going to be easy. He will give it his best shot, help the NHS and try to keep the north happy.
A lot of spinning plates as someone said, but can anyone here think of anyone in any party who is strong enough to deliver on all that?

I agree that he'll be here for the duration

And probably be re-elected

Yehbutnobut Wed 18-Dec-19 15:04:29

And what a man he is!

Yes. I didn't vote to join the common market but came to accept it, but as I said Maarstrict was a step too far.

Apologies. I meant to reply to yehbutnobut.

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 15:09:34

Yes, they should have stopped at Maastricht and then we might have been OK

(sorry, I couldn’t resist grin)

Yehbutnobut Wed 18-Dec-19 15:12:05

Just that a Customs Union (NOT the same as the single market and free movement) would have been a better deal.

That is very like the old CM and would have ironed out the NI problem ... and the Scottish Border in years to come.

Alisue Wed 18-Dec-19 15:24:19

The north only voted for him because he promised brexit by the end of January 2020.. I still don’t believe we will leave the EU on that date. And we won’t be leaving without a deal of some sort. He promised we would LEAVE WITHOUT A DEAL BY THE 31st of October this year ! Did that happen?
AGREAT BIG NO is the answer. HES A LIAR ALWAYS HAS BEEN ALWAYS WILL BE . I DONT TRUST ANT TORIE

Alisue: He promised we would LEAVE WITHOUT A DEAL BY THE 31st of October this year ! Did that happen? AGREAT BIG NO is the answer. HES A LIAR
Weren't you paying attention Alisue? He did everything in his power to leave by that date but the HoC blocked him, mostly remainer MPs. It was totally beyond his control.

I am too depressed to think about it.

Magicnonna Wed 18-Dec-19 15:49:05

Congratulations to Boris. Long may he last!

Jabberwok Wed 18-Dec-19 16:04:18

Hear, hear! Magicnonna!?????

Labaik Wed 18-Dec-19 16:08:40

Can those of you that are jubilant at the thought of no deal please explain to me what that will entail and also how that solves the Irish problem. Also, given that the pound has now plummeted again at the threat of no deal, how can it be such a good thing?

Daisymae Wed 18-Dec-19 16:19:25

2 years. I think he will crash us out of the EU and leave someone else to sort out the mess.

MerylStreep Wed 18-Dec-19 17:27:15

Many have asked: why did the poor/disenfranchised/ vulnerable vote conservative. This might explain. Not my words.

"Perhaps it's because working class people don't want to be labelled as 'vulnerable' and are insulted by offers of 'protection'. Perhaps it's because the elite pity can so quickly switch to loathing and contempt when the very same working class people being pitied deign to express a political opinion.
Or perhaps it's because people want political agency, not charity

SirChenjin Wed 18-Dec-19 17:42:55

Let’s be clear though - it’s older, less educated people who are voting Tory. They’ve given him a chance but I imagine they won’t tolerate broken promises - the older generation don’t take kindly to poor service.

Perhaps it is because these brexitory supporting poor folk read The Sun, The Express and The Daily Mail and have watched endless vox-pops from the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation visiting Labour leave constituencies and hearing the man in Weatherspoons saying "we voted leave. Why haven't we left yet?"

Authoress Wed 18-Dec-19 18:18:05

He will have mucked everything up LONG before next Dec's EU deadline.

varian Wed 18-Dec-19 18:18:08

Out of those who voted Conservative in 2015, the result in the fraudulent referendum of 2016 was -

Leave 61%
Remain 39%

Out of those who voted Labour in 2015, the result in the fraudulent referendum of 2016 was -

Leave 35%
Remain 65%

So we can see that there was a higher proportion of Conservative Remainers than Labour Leavers.

Did anyone ever see the Brexit Broadcasting Corporation do a vox-pop in a Conservative Remain seat?

I certainly didn't.

Jaxie Wed 18-Dec-19 18:20:53

If Keir Starmer has anything to do with the mess of the Labour Party he'll get rid of those fossilised Lefties who are to blame for so many principled socialists leaving the Party. The former Labour Party members who voted for the hypocritical Johnson will soon have cause to regret it.

Chestnut Wed 18-Dec-19 18:33:27

varian - you cannot even say the word 'referendum' without inserting 'fraudulent' in front of it. If it was fraudulent as you maintain then why didn't Gina Miller stop the process? She had the finest legal minds working on it and did everything possible to stop it happening.
She's a liar by the way. I heard her correcting Andrew Neil when he said she tried to stop Brexit. 'No I didn't' she said. 'I was showing that it was not being done legally'. But in fact she had tried to stop it, because she told everyone how to vote to stop Brexit!

MerylStreep Wed 18-Dec-19 18:51:22

Varian
I see you still haven't reconciled yourself to the fact that your beloved wannabe prime minister ex leader of the LibDems lost her seat ? but that the 'posh' Tory boy won by humongous majority and can now more or less push through any legislation he wants. Would that be correct?

Ramblingrose22 Wed 18-Dec-19 18:59:15

Getting back to the original post OP?), I think Boris will stay for as long as he thinks he is popular.

I don't think he'll like the job though - too much like hard work when he's been used to getting others to do it for him and managing the details.

He could last 10 years if we have left the EU and he has splashed lots of money at northern seats. And if he increases the number of GPs and sorts the NHS out I might even praise him.....eventually.

Firecracker123 Wed 18-Dec-19 19:05:07

I don't think Varian and to be fair a few other Remainers on here will ever get over the shock that Leave won the EU referendum and Boris got a stonking majority in the latest General Election and we are finally going to leave the EU 31st January 2020. But we are leaving and Boris won so put that in your pipe and smoke it and shut up. Labour are finished and Swinson lost her seat. Ain't life grand lol.

IT'S GETTING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE BREXIT ? ?
