Black Lives Matter versus All Lives Matter

There has been much talk about the slogan ‘Black Lives Matter‘ with many people saying instead that all lives matter. I think it’s a good topic for debate and to gain understanding.

To me, saying ‘all lives matter‘ is to deny that racism exists. It denies the experience of many black people who are not treated as white people would have been. Think of the man who achieved the highest office in America. Would anyone have raised the ‘birther’ question had Barack Obama been white? Saying all lives matter also closes down debate on the issue, suggesting that the very particular problems black communities experience are no different from that of anyone else therefore we shouldn’t talk or do anything about it.

The term ‘black lives matter‘ is not saying that only black lives matter. It means that black lives matter as much as other lives, whether that is in the undue violence meted out to the black community, the discrimination they face in healthcare , employment and housing and in many, many other ways.

I’ll put a link on the next post, explaining why saying all lives matter is wrong. If you only look at one item, please watch All Plates Matter. It sums it up in two minutes. Be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

Has anybody read the Vision on the Black Lives Matter website.

Gajahgran Fri 12-Jun-20 07:23:25

I agree with you Sparkling.

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 07:24:11

Are you aware of the racist abuse many black football players experience? Why do you think that is?

Furret Fri 12-Jun-20 07:24:51

What on earth are you on about Sparkling. There are so many muddled (and inaccurate) thoughts in your post that you have completely lost me.

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 07:26:40

I am fed up with people who can't even acknowledge that there is still racism in the UK.

I'm not claiming that it's as bad as it was in the past, but history hasn't stood still. There is still plenty of room for improvement.

Furret Fri 12-Jun-20 07:26:43

Sadly growstuff there is so much ingrained racism in our generation that many just don’t ‘get’ it,

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 07:28:20

Furret I know. It's visible.

Tooting29 Fri 12-Jun-20 08:17:06

Sparkling I agree with you entirely. And before I am branded a generational racist. I will set the context of my experience. I am white 60+. I am fortunate to have mixed race nieces and nephews who have brought a wealth of diversity to our family, we enjoy their culture and fully embrace it. And yes they have faced racism in their lives and this is wrong and is challenged. Their lives matter. At some point in the past they have a slave connection and they and we continue to educate the younger generations. I also have a very close gay friend, who faced prejudice and fear for her career in the late 70s if her sexuality had been known. She still faces abuse and her life matters. I have a granddaughter who is also gay and her and her partner have to deal with paint daubed on their house and abuse frequently. Their lives matter. Their child our great granddaughter may have to face bullying or comment at school as her family does not fit the norm. Her life matters. Lastly I had an autistic and epileptic step son, who faced difficulties and prejudice from people who did not understand his condition. His life mattered. I have another friend who has been seriously overweight all her life, she has faced abuse and judgement and assumptions made on her appearance. Her life matters.
I am proud that my children and grandchildren have been raised to embrace different cultures and accept people as they are. We cannot change history, but we must learn from it. We can protest and pull down statutes, and have the conversation. We can legislate but until all hearts and minds recognise that everyone's life is valued then no further progress will be made.

Gajahgran Fri 12-Jun-20 08:23:03

Growstuff I don't think that generalising and calling a whole generation racist is actually going to promote much racial harmony.

Gajahgran Fri 12-Jun-20 08:41:32

Excellent post Tooting29. My concern is the anarchy we are seeing on the streets. Pulling down statues by mobs cannot be right if we are a civilised country. People will take matters into their own hands to protect the statues and many will be hurt, including the police. I am disgusted that the media are trying to rile everybody up. There needs to be a serious review where everybody can have a voice. We are already trying to adjust our lives to deal with the pandemic and now we have this to cope with.

Starblaze Fri 12-Jun-20 09:28:04

We already know all lives matter. No one would be saying it if black people hadn't asked for their lives to matter too.

Issues need to be dealt with seperately to be heard.

When we remember 911 you don't hear people shouting ALL BUILDINGS MATTER

When we have breast cancer awareness people don't shout ALL CANCERS MATTER

When someone breaks their leg you don't shout at them ALL BROKEN BONES MATTER

We already know those things matter.

Issues need to be dealt with seperately to understand themand deal with them.

Starblaze Fri 12-Jun-20 09:44:20

So if we know all lives matter but one group is saying "we don't feellike our lives matter" then we should be looking into why that is the case and fixing the issue. Then we can say all lives matter because it is true.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:01:21

I see Farage has gone from LBC with immediate effect, proving what we have known all along that his brand of politics is racist

Furret Fri 12-Jun-20 10:03:32

Where did I say ‘a whole generation’?

Grany Fri 12-Jun-20 10:20:22

Do you think it's going a bit far now with UKTV pulling the episode in Faulty Towers Don't mention the war, because of radial slurs ?

And Gone With The Wind Mammy was the first black woman to receive an oscar ?

And other comedy shows.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:34:06

I think it is very dangerous to judge drama/comedy/writings from years ago by today's standards.

The majority of the Worlds Nations are built on pasts that we know would not and should not be acceptable in 2020.

By destroying and hiding away anything that a section of society feels uncomfortable with (we should all be uncomfortable with slavery) puts us all on a very slippery slope that has not got an end in sight.

blondenana Fri 12-Jun-20 10:34:36

The way things are going,it seems now like only black lives matter,it is madness now, pulling TV programmes and changing street names
So many people are so fed up with how this is going they are losing sympathy,

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:37:29

There does seem to be a lack of levelheadedness and judgement which tbh always happens as a reaction.

BLM certainly have not called for these to be axed it is ONLY the decision of the companies.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:41:16

I have just read this on Twitter and it does feel very apt censoring things in the name of political correctness will lead to more extremism than ever before

I hope with all my heart that we can stop before we reach the cliff edge where the only way is down!!!

Anniebach Fri 12-Jun-20 10:48:13

I share your fear GrannyGravy

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Jun-20 10:50:34

As I said a bit of levelheadedness needed.

paddyanne Fri 12-Jun-20 10:54:56

So blondenana you'd be happy to see statues of Jimmy Saville in every town centre? After all he did LOADS for charity ,helped raise funds, gave his time .We should just forget his"murky past"? Lets face it he was a good man ,just misunderstood and child abuse wasn't a huge issue back then ...was it?It was happening all over the place.
Jimmy Saville ruined lives but not a fraction of the lives ruined or ended by the men on the plinths.

By doing good things to appease thir guilt.unlikely, pay for a place in Heaven more likely,or to make themselves feel important and get treated as a superior ..most likely ,should we all forget the evil they perpetrated on people who had no choice with wht happened to them .The statues should go ,into museums or warehouses it where they belong along

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 11:06:25

So what do you suggest Gajahgran? Just let the racists get away with it without being challenged?

Callistemon Fri 12-Jun-20 11:06:59

Does anyone remember that song from South Pacific, the musical? Some theatres decided that it should be removed from their productions but I think that misses the point entirely.

The musical explores the prejudices of that time and the song 'You've Got To Be Carefully Taught' explains how prejudice is passed down through the generations.
It is not necessarily inherent, it is learned.

growstuff Fri 12-Jun-20 11:08:20

Why pick on me anyway? I endorsed what Furret wrote.
