“Speaking ahead of the visit, Mr Johnson said: 'When I stood on the steps of Downing Street one year ago, I pledged to be a Prime Minister for every corner of the United Kingdom.

'Whether you are from East Kilbride or Dumfries, Motherwell or Paisley, I promised to level up across Britain and close the opportunity gap.

'The last six months have shown exactly why the historic and heartfelt bond that ties the four nations of our country together is so important and the sheer might of our union has been proven once again.'”

Will his visit be a success or is the SNP too close now to going it alone?

I think I’m right in saying that the PM has to grant permission to Scotland to hold yet another independence referendum.

I think that’s unlikely to happen, certainly not in the near future.

biba70 Thu 23-Jul-20 16:44:10

I do believe that if Scotland gets independence- money, business and industry, + agriculture - will pour in - from the EU and others who want to access the EU. And tourism will thrive as never before.

mcem Thu 23-Jul-20 16:50:30

biba I look forward to reading about your move north.

To Jabberwok et al -
if you (pl) and we agree that separation and sovereignty suit us then why is WM so desperate to hold on to Scotland?
Simple question. Are you able to answer in tones that don't reek of "Little Englander"?

biba70 Thu 23-Jul-20 16:52:27

Jennifer Eccles - if he refuses, there will be a revolution.

Sussexborn Thu 23-Jul-20 16:57:01

Was just about to say the same Jabberwok. If I could vote Scotland would be independent by now under the leadership of Frau Sturgeon. Hopefully we would not be subjected to her whinging and whining whilst she finds the reality of dealing with Germany’s domineering behaviour and can kowtow to them along with France. She can share the crumbs with Italy and Greece when Germans are installed to tell them how to run their economy and their country.

growstuff Thu 23-Jul-20 17:14:56

I didn't realise Nicola Sturgeon has German ancestry. hmm

Jane10 Thu 23-Jul-20 17:18:21

Noooo Sussexborn-don't condemn us to life under that useless lot. We've had 13 years of their mess while simultaneously talking themselves up. Empty pots make most noise and they certainly do!

JenniferEccles Thu 23-Jul-20 17:20:32

Is the possible increase in support for independence just a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to the feeling amongst some that NS has handled the pandemic well?

Isn’t it likely that once we are more or less back to normal that people will view the situation much as they did over the previous two referendums and realise that they are so much better staying?

As I said before Boris has to give permission and he’s going to resist as long as he can isn’t he?

trisher Thu 23-Jul-20 17:31:29

I'm still in favour of having the border moved back to Hadrian's Wall then when Scotland goes independent I'll be with them. Nifty Nicola instead of Bumbling Boris-Yes Please!

lemongrove Thu 23-Jul-20 17:46:55

You could move there trisher there are no border controls.

mcem and Granny23 you are sounding very defensive about things....Nessie, who mentioned it first and isn’t that nonexisting beastie a huge source of tourist revenue anyway?
Braveheart Boris was a joke btw.
Jane10 good for all to remember that not all Scots are dead keen on Surgeon and the SNP.

Well said Jennifer and I think you are right on all counts.

Jabberwok Thu 23-Jul-20 17:56:39

No one has said that N.S has German ancestry! confused! The border is not Hadrians wall, its Marshall Meadows bay (east) Solway Firth (west)
God knows why Westminster is so keen to hang onto Scotland! some romantic dream about one big happy family perhaps? totally unrealistic of course even on a good day! How strange it is that it's commendable to be a patriotic Scot (a little Scotlander but to be a patriotic Englander just provokes the usual sneers and jeers!
It's a pity the referendum, when it comes, doesn't include the whole UK. Bye bye Scotland would be a certainty then!

Urmstongran Thu 23-Jul-20 17:58:39

I love Scotland and the Scottish people. My 87y old stepfather is from the West Highlands. He wasn’t allowed to cast a vote in the Indy referendum (even though he still owns a house up there) because he lives in England. He said he wouldn’t have voted SNP or for leaving the U.K.

I think Sturgeon is trapped. She knows Scotland won't vote for independence once the transition is over and we're out the EU proper.

Scots won't take Scotland out of the UK while we are out of the EU. Sturgeon knows this, hence her desperation for an extension.

Independence is dead, on the sword of Brexit. Sturgeon can try and spin it, but she and the others at the top of the SNP know Indy is slain.

vegansrock Thu 23-Jul-20 18:03:24

Amazing how deluded some folk are.

Jabberwok Thu 23-Jul-20 18:11:03

I would have thought N.S would have to have a cast iron agreement about joining the EU before contemplating leaving the UK! Falling between two stools comes to mind and that could last for some time. That would certainly be in the EU's interest as the more desperate the nominees the more increasingly impossible the conditions for joining could become! Maybe not,but it would be a risk, unlike last time when there was someone else to turn to, this time that person is very unlikely to be there.

vegansrock Thu 23-Jul-20 18:12:26

Ooh just like the cast iron oven ready deal Johnson claimed to have ?

Jabberwok Thu 23-Jul-20 18:16:33

He did, as has been proved. We've left in case you hadn't realised! No one said that the trade deals were oven ready which is what I presume you're talking about?

J52 Thu 23-Jul-20 18:17:07

Urmstrongran we own a house in Scotland and one in England and can register to vote in both places, but are only allowed to choose one place to vote, per election.

Jabberwok Thu 23-Jul-20 18:18:28

Oven ready referred to the WA, which it was, not the trade deals!

Urmstongran Thu 23-Jul-20 18:21:03

He chose to vote in England J52 - he’s worked and lived down here for 60 years - he just used to go ‘home’ for the holidays!

MaizieD Thu 23-Jul-20 18:21:09

No one said that the trade deals were oven ready which is what I presume you're talking about?

No. it was the Withdrawal Agreement that he's now trying to renege on.

Of course, it's signed and is an international treaty. I don't fancy our chances of making any deals with other countries if he succeeds. The UK will be regarded as totally untrustworthy..

I think Scotland will declare UDI if needs be...

vegansrock Thu 23-Jul-20 18:22:10

But did people realise that Johnson’s deal was the same as May’s which he voted against and not an actual trade deal? No - many thought it was all done and dusted and we’d be like Norway as promised. Another lie.

J52 Thu 23-Jul-20 18:25:38

Ahh, I misunderstood‘wasn’t allowed’.

MaizieD Thu 23-Jul-20 18:29:37

Not quite the same as May's deal, vegansrock.

It moved the border to the Irish sea, cutting off NI and making it the border of the EU. So that now there will be all sorts of complications with passage of goods between them and mainland Britain.

And, of course it threw NI under a bus...

Jane10 Thu 23-Jul-20 18:36:55

Don't underestimate the silent majority in Scotland who know that independence is daft. The EU has already said Scotland can't join it.
