“Speaking ahead of the visit, Mr Johnson said: 'When I stood on the steps of Downing Street one year ago, I pledged to be a Prime Minister for every corner of the United Kingdom.

'Whether you are from East Kilbride or Dumfries, Motherwell or Paisley, I promised to level up across Britain and close the opportunity gap.

'The last six months have shown exactly why the historic and heartfelt bond that ties the four nations of our country together is so important and the sheer might of our union has been proven once again.'”

Will his visit be a success or is the SNP too close now to going it alone?

Urmstongran Thu 23-Jul-20 18:47:18

J52 no it was my fault for not making myself clear! Sorry.
?

Many proud Scots I know wish the SNP hadn’t hijacked the Saltire. Nowadays they don’t like what it seems to represent which is a shame.

Jabberwok Thu 23-Jul-20 18:47:25

The EU is trying to stitch us up more like and Boris isn't having it! Brilliant!
Jane 10 if that's the case and independence is achieved, then what??????

Urmstongran Thu 23-Jul-20 18:49:07

Spain say they will veto Scotland joining the EU anyway because of the Catalonia issue.

Jabberwok Thu 23-Jul-20 19:03:56

And the Basque region apparently which straddles the border between France and Spain ?!!!!!

Granny23 Thu 23-Jul-20 19:32:19

Fake News from Urmstongran8 and Jane 10. The EU has *not said that Scotland cannot join. Indeed they have stated that if Scotland is in the process of becoming Independent during the transition period then Scotland will be able to remain in the EU, rather than have to rejoin.

Similarly, The official Spanish position is that A) they have neither the right nor desire to interfere in another country's internal politics (because they do not want other Countries interfering in theirs) and B) they recognise that Scotland is an ancient Nation, unlike Catalonia, which is and has been, a mere region or province. The Spanish Government has stated that it would not oppose Scotland remaining in and rejoining the EU.

It may not be an admirable sentiment, but I believe that the EU member states would take great pleasure in welcoming Scotland to their ranks, if only because it would be a poke in the eye for the British PM and retribution for all the difficulties and delays they have had to endure during the prolonged Brexit process

I stand corrected Granny23.

An opinion from Scotland

Granny23 Thu 23-Jul-20 19:45:34

The SNP has not hijacked the Saltire - the Party colours remain black on yellow. The much wider Independence Movement have adopted the Saltire as their own, which is certainly appropriate as it is Scotland's flag and they are fighting to protect their Nation from dominance by another Nation.

How can it be claimed that there is a silent majority who do not want Independence when recent polling shows that 54% of Scots are in favour of it? Unless this 'silent majority' have taken a vow of silence which prevents them from responding to pollsters!

Jabberwok Thu 23-Jul-20 19:47:25

Think I'd want that in a proper legal document signed and sealed! From what I've read the EU changes it's position fairly frequently over everything!

GillT57 Thu 23-Jul-20 20:02:12

Don't underestimate the silent majority in Scotland who know that independence is daft. The EU has already said Scotland can't join it, you have hit the nail on the head there. Many members of my family live in Scotland, and without exception, they do not want independence, cannot abide 'wee Nicola' and are in despair as Scotland's once superior education and medicine is run into the ground. The independence movement is a distraction from the mess of Scotland's finances and my family were in despair about their voting choices at the last GE; either SNP or Tory with its associated NHS sell off, austerity etc. Sorry Paddyanne, you may be a big voice on GN but many, many Scottish people do not agree with your views on 'oor watter, oor oil, oor fish' as my late aunt used to say ( she hated the English too, despite two English sons in law!)

vegansrock Thu 23-Jul-20 20:36:39

The EU have been constant in their position - it’s the U.K. which keeps chopping and changing.

varian Thu 23-Jul-20 20:48:30

I do not believe that there has ever been any intention on behalf of the UK government to negotiate honestly. The so-called negotiators just keep demanding all the benefits of EU membership after we have left.

Of course that was what was promisised by the Leave liars and sadly far too many guillible voters believed we could have a "cake and eat it" brexit.

varian Thu 23-Jul-20 20:51:11

Meanwhile, the so-called negotiators, taking their orders from the disaster capitalists, are actually heading for a disastrous no-deal brexit.

'stitch us up' Jabberwork. How, where, when - could you clarify please.

mcem Thu 23-Jul-20 21:04:06

I like the reference to the silent majority of less than 44%!
I'll settle for that!

Jane10 Thu 23-Jul-20 22:27:29

Don't worry mcem the silent majority is far higher than that. Polls are very limited instruments of public voting intention.

Jane10 Thu 23-Jul-20 22:29:37

BTW Granny23 your info re the EU is either out of date or wishful thinking.

lemongrove Thu 23-Jul-20 22:37:51

You certainly can’t rely on polls, notoriously unreliable.

So Johnson flew to Orkney for a couple of photo ops in a remote area and then flew home in time for tea - and that’s a “visit to Scotland”? Why not Glasgow or Edinburgh where a lot of Scottish people actually live? I think we know why. This visit definitely a vote winner - for the SNP.

Is that all he did ? Why ? Was there a point to the visit ?

Yes please do.

vegansrock Fri 24-Jul-20 07:59:25

I think the point to the visit was that he could make a bumbling speech about the union surrounded by security and a few nodding dogs, a group waving Saltires and EU flags kept well away. He held a crab and visited an RAF base. That’s it - back to London for tea. He can now say he’s “visited Scotland”.

quizqueen Fri 24-Jul-20 08:03:15

Boris doesn't visit Northern flooding areas, he's in trouble. Boris visits Scotland, he's in trouble. The man can't do anything right in some people's eyes. I read that Scotland have been given extra money to help with cv-19. Why? They have their own budget already and not that many cases in comparison with England.

In answer to anther poster, Scotland have more MPs proportional to size/population than England so boundary changes are needed all round; in England too. The majority of the people of Scotland have never seemed to like the English throughout history so it's time for them to go, I think. What divorce settlement are you offering as it seems to be the Leavers who have to foot the bill for everything like in Brexit terms!

Urmstongran Fri 24-Jul-20 08:06:07

Didn’t Boris go up to Orkney as £50 million was going to the Outer Hebrides as part of the ‘levelling up’ process?

mcem Fri 24-Jul-20 08:12:20

"The man can't do anything right in some people's eyes".
At last, QQ, you've seen the light!
