Lol. Boris won't answer questions because that's what personality disordered people do! If you want a straight answer, don't ask a sociopath or a narcissist, they can only do compulsive lying.
There's absolutely no point in hoping, wishing or expecting honesty or clarity, that's only causing yourself unnecessary upset. Their promises are empty so don't bother to remember them and certainly don't rely on them. Bottom line, don't trust a word they say, focus on what they actually do. 'Actions speak louder than words.'

That's just your disgusting opinion. I suppose you would prefer the Labour/ Marxist alternative run by the abhorrent Corbyn and his cronies who obviously think the rules regarding Coronavirus do not apply to them or are just arrogant enough to ignore them.

Disgusting? That's just your opinion, which in my opinion is disgusting.

There is so little mention of the countries that have handled the pandemic well. We need to look to those and ask where we are going wrong not just saying that certain other countries are having as bad a time as we are. Very little mention in the news these days if South Korea, Germany or even China itself these days.

The so-called (self described) "silent majority" is hardly that silent unfortunately.

These are the people who voted for brexit, voted for Boris, and many of them would just love to vote for Trump.

They are not, nor ever have been, silent and they have done untold damage to this country.

No, the bottom line is that it’s up to everyone of us to play our part. Even those who claim to not understand the rules ( buy a newspaper! The Mail sets the rules out clearly) surely know the Hands Face Space phrase.

It’s all of us doing out bit which will help to slow the spread.

The virus isn’t going away so we will have to learn to live with it until the vaccine is ready.

I agree that people should follow the rules, but I disagree that anybody should be encouraged to increase the Daily Mail's profits by even a few pence.

BTW It's easy to follow the rules (I have done to the letter since the very start) when one doesn't have to earn a living or go into a school. I wonder why even GNers have admitted they've broken them.

Many of the countries which have done well are proper democracies, electing their politicians by a system of proportional representation, very often having coalition governments and therefore representing a true majority and cross section of their populations.

They are therefore trusted far more than dictatorships and governments elected by a minority which still exercise absolute power.

Interestingly, quite a lot of these countries, such as New Zealand, Germany and Finland have female leaders.

The measures seem fairly clear to me but Boris took the wrong action when he opened up the country after lockdown. Encouraging everyone to go out and eat, go out and shop and go back to the office. To much far to quickly and we are now paying the price.
Also to be honest I am sick to death of hearing students talking about their University experience, I thought the point of going to university was to learn. They are now young adults and need to take the good with the bad and take responsibility for
As for Boris, he is a waste of space.

growstuff Tue 13-Oct-20 13:19:38

Currently, the biggest rises in cases are in the 10-24 age group.

When that's broken down, not surprisingly, 19-24 year olds show the biggest rise, followed by 10-19 year olds, ie schoolchildren.

Ironically, this is precisely what Sunetra Gupta and the other fringe scientists are supporting. I'm a bit baffled why there's so much tut-tutting and mixed messaging from people who think we should get "life back to normal", but shake their pearls in disgust when young, low risk people behave as normal.

It sounds to me as though some people are suffering from Johnsonitus, ie they can't make up their minds, so flip flop from one idea to another without thinking things through.

I assume you don't actually know any 18 year olds who went through the nightmare of having their exams cancelled and not knowing until the last minute what their grades would be.

Yes, universities are places of learning, but they're also places to open minds and widen experiences - and students pay dearly for the experience. They're consumers and having a bad deal.

Glenfinnan Tue 13-Oct-20 13:25:56

I think we all know what to do! Just because we are in a medium risk category ( as I am) we shouldn’t take unnecessary risks.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 13-Oct-20 13:27:41

Our County Council is asking the Government to allow it to go into tier 2 not sure we qualify as we only have 77 per 100,000 and the criteria is 100 and above.

I'm in Nottingham. As far as l'm concerned l have been doing what we've been told to do from tomorrow all these months anyway. The students should not have returned to uni they have been the major problem in making this situation worse. We should have got through the winter months and then opened up the universities next spring. We can't take the attitude well that's how it's always been done. We must find new ways of doing things.

No mention of Cummings or Johnson’s father then I see.....

They were not part of the topic of conversation but my comments would apply to them too.

I believe that's what SAGE advised, but the government put pressure on the universities to open.

A friend of mine visited Liverpool a few weeks ago. He was shocked that "no-one" was wearing a mask in any social setting. Just saying....

Am I right in thinking you're in Essex? The rate is higher than 77 per 100,000 in the north west of the county.

Juana Tue 13-Oct-20 13:38:03

I wish people would stop criticising Boris and the government .We are in an unprecedented situation as are many other countries who are also blaming their governments. If certain people had adhered to the rules instead of selfishly doing what they wanted we would not be in the situation we are in now. People queuing outside Costco in Manchester at the weekend were clearly oblivious of safety measures, no social distancing , hardly anyone in face coverings, if this is happening elsewhere no wonder cases are surging.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 13-Oct-20 13:40:51

Yes growstuff I am. Tendering is up to 90.5 where I am it’s half that.

MayBee70 Tue 13-Oct-20 13:43:12

So it worked. The government persuading people that it was their fault that Covid isn’t being controlled not their handling of the pandemic. And I’m tired of people referring to Johnson as Boris, as if he’s some sort of cute cuddly kitten. He’s a grown man who’s responsible for our lives and, thus far he’s not handled it very well. Maybe if people are ignoring the rules it’s down to the person who is actually governing this country and that’s Cummings.

varian Tue 13-Oct-20 13:44:40

We can surely criticise the people who ignore the rules and also criticise our appalling incompetent government.

I do wonder how many of the rule breakers also belong to that so-called "silent majority" who voted for Boris because he's "a good laugh" and consider themselves to be "freedom-loving Britons".

Barmeyoldbat Tue 13-Oct-20 13:45:37

Growstuff, actually I do know 18 year olds who have gone to uni, two of my GC, one in year 3 and the other just starting. So please don't assume I have no experience or knowledge of students.
I agree that they are getting a bad deal with regards to education but that doesn't change the fact that they need to act in a more responsible manner and keep themselves and others safe from the virus and they are not at uni just to have fun and party.

maddyone Tue 13-Oct-20 13:51:22

Interesting what lizzypopbottle and Juana said about Liverpool.and Manchester. Yesterday trisher was told off on Gransnet for saying people in the North won't follow the rules. It would appear that she has a point.

MayBee70 Tue 13-Oct-20 13:51:46

Johnson constantly goes on about how he hates imposing rules: he did so again on tv last night yet again giving mixed messages. And then we have Hancock supposedly drinking in the commons bar after ten and making Covid related jokes (which haven’t been denied to my knowledge).

dirgni Tue 13-Oct-20 13:57:25

Boris the bumbler ! Why is it that a country like Italy has managed to get on top of it and we haven’t?

NannanTo4 Tue 13-Oct-20 14:04:42

Exactly the same (I am 64 next week)
I have only left my home since March a Hangul of times. In my car from my drive to my 2 daughters and young grandchildren.
I am intelligent. I listen. I am confused.
I have sat back and watched it all going on and my belief is that all was well until Dominic Cummings disrespected the whole country. Until then, even the sceptical were following lockdown. Once he did that (and got away with it) the naysayers had the green light to do as they wanted.
I will sit and wait it out. It has got the better of my anxieties. I am aware I am alive - but every day is groundhog.

Please can we stop the playground left v. right drivel & concentrate, as some contributors have, on the question of whether the current restrictions are correct.
In a situation which is constantly changing of course the government has to adapt. Saying you don’t understand any government advice is Not a great advert for a person.

These are not unprecedented times other than our Worldwide reaction to yet another virus.
Nobody seems to remember Hong Kong flu over 2 winters in the late 60s , killing 2 million worldwide, yet everyone, everywhere got on with work & life.
And it passed as this will.
