JenniferEllces European countries has had to cope with problems a good 2 or 3 weeks ahead of us. You would have thought forewarned is forearmed but we didn't think the same problems would affect us. We've missed so many chances to get informed procedures in place early.

Starmer calling for lockdown (Edited by GNHQ)
(263 Posts)Seems that Labour are breaking ranks and calling for a 2/3 week lockdown. Some Sage members agree and Whitty said that we are not doing enough. Personally I would support it, although it's not going to be popular. Looking at the mass gathering in Liverpool last night it's no wonder we are heading off a cliff.
Trisher I had Asian ‘flu when I was at school. I remember being quite ill but neither of my parents got it, nor did my brother, So it can’t have been as contagious as this virus.

The polls I've seen do support another total lockdown.
The "idiots" in Liverpool were increasing herd immunity, which is what some posters think should happen.
I doubt if that was their intention. They were just being idiots as can be expected.
Fennel, I too had scarlet fever in 1945 when I was 5 and was put into an isolation hospital for a couple of weeks.
Also had Asian flu because I was working on a ward where it was in 1957----nobody panicked ! No media and doctors visited homes.
I'm another one that didn't know about the Asian 'flu before reading this thread so onto Google for me.

Probably! Any rule maker has to factor in idiots. If everybody could be trusted to behave impeccably, there would be no need for rules.
However, there are enough "covid deniers" around, including some on GN. These young people were doing exactly what the anti-lockdown brigade advocate - getting on with their lives and acting in a way not untypical of people of their age - so it's hypocritical for people to whine about it.
PS. If one of my children had been amongst them, I wouldn't be best pleased and I'd tell them so.

Doctors aren't visiting homes now. I fail to see the relevance of comparisons with Asian flu.

I don't remember Asian flu, I was a young teenager at the time living in the backwaters of Norfolk and in my case it just passed me by.
Are there any Covid deniers on Gransnet? Can’t say I’ve noticed any. Different opinions about how it should be dealt with, but no deniers that I’ve seen.

Please don't make excuses for this appalling behaviour. Their parents are partly responsible for the way they brought them up not knowing the difference between right and wrong. I don't think the anti-lockdown brigade would advocate them 'Getting on with their lives' in such a mindless, selfish manner and I don't think this behaviour is typical of people brought up in respectable families.
Not necessarily Covid deniers but I do think this constant referring back to fly pandemics when ‘we just got on with life’ is a form of Covid denial. Or not exactly denying it but belittling it.
“respectable families” there is a phrase I haven’t heard since the 60’s??
Flu not fly.....

There has been at least one whom I can remember, who seem to think it's a hoax. There are others who think we should just get on with it and have voiced support for Gupta, Heneghan and Sikora. There have certainly been those who think any rules don't apply to them

What a load of nonsense! I know plenty of young people who were brought up in "respectable families" (as was I) but they and I did foolish things when young.
I take it you reject the herd immunity theory Janpt.

So do I! It's the same old same old! We were more resilient than this snowflake generation blah blah. It only kills about 1% of the people who catch, so what's the fuss about? In the war, we .... [yawn]
Two of the most respectable (whatever that means) people I know have not practised any social distancing since this started. They are over 60 very law abiding, lots of community work etc etc. It has been amazing to watch. I am fascinated to be honest but its nothing to do with respectability.
growstuff so we are in Tier 2 along with London from midnight tomorrow!!! Thurrock and Southend have rising numbers but are not going into/haven't requested to join Tier 2 (I know they are unitary boroughs).
I do not think it will make a difference to the R rate, people I know have definitely got lockdown/regulation fatigue .
Lemongrove As usual, you are the voice of reason.
I see very little point in criticising the government, They won’t get it right whichever way they go. Some think the economy is the priority so criticise if things are closed, while those who think health is more important whinge if there is not a total lockdown.
Also, those who complain that “they are not taking SAGE’s advice’ forget that the government is also being advised by the economists. The other thing is the changing behaviour of the virus and the new facts about it that the researchers discover, It is a very narrow tightrope and, as I have said before, I am so pleased it is not my responsibility to have make those decisions.
I had forgotten about Asian flu. I do remember being miffed because my school was closed down. I don’t know if all schools were closed or just those that had a lot of cases. I didn’t get it either.

Yes, we are. It won't make any practical difference to me. As far as I can tell, the only real difference is that households can't mix within the same house. I live on my own and the only person who has been in my house since March is my son. I guess he could form a bubble with me, but he's in Newcastle now and I won't be going anywhere near him, even at Christmas if he's allowed home, until he's self-isolated for two weeks.
There are loads of people moaning on the local Facebook page, but we were actually warned a couple of weeks ago and still people were saying that masks are a waste if time and that they weren't giving up on previous planned parties and seeing their relatives, etc. I've only been out a couple of times and I saw plenty of people in groups (no social distancing) without masks, sitting outside the pubs and cafes. Some of the questions people have are just daft - it's no flipping wonder that the number of cases in this district have trebled in two weeks. There's even a full-blown covid-denier in the local group, who thinks it's all a plot by a global conspiracy to control us. [sigh]
PS. Maybe they were all brought up in unrespectable families.

Yes, the government could do something!
They could:
1 Transfer Test and Trace to local authorities and give Lady Harding the boot.
2 Liaise better with local authorities.
3 Compensate the people who can't work (as Sweden does).
4 Enforce the rules they've already made.
