I wonder that anyone doesn't recognise what was behind the original concept of the welfare state that if you feed, clothe and house people properly they will be more able to contribute to society, they will cost less in health care and will pay back the money spent on them in the end. So actually not providing food isn't a good way of saving money, it costs more in the long term.

We need a coup
(513 Posts)Whether it is an internal Tory overthrow or another political group, we need the current criminal incompetents removed from power. They are willfully causing needless C19 deaths and in-full-view pocketing tax payer money with only the flimsiest of attempts to pretend they're not.
I'm no Tory (god forbid) but bloody hell, what we need now is a Margaret Thatcher to sort this unholy mess Boris and his buddies are making.
Janpt What you say is basically admirable only have children you can afford though things are not that easy not that black and white with over 10 years of Tory austerity, a political choice not a nessessity. Now covid, Brexit a right wing criminal government in power. Newspapers mainly right wing printing popaganda too for their own benefit owned by billionaires against the people's nterests the media going along with it. The programme about people living off benefits is sad really, they probably find ways and means to get by with the help of their friends, it's the only way they know The programme makers are making fun of these people at their expense having a laugh its called poverty porn to get viewers to focus on a few people seemingly living off benefits though what programmes and newspapers should focus on and don't is the rich getting away with not paying their taxes hiding their money away off shore. A film by Ken Loach I Daniel Blake is about the difficulty people have getting benefits they are due and it highlighted the conscious cruelty of the Tory government the DHSS sanctioning people at the least excuse. The people having to wait 5 6 weeks to get pension credit and some people have starved waiting for their benefits got into debt some comited suicide and become homeless. Food banks now people having to go to them. So like the OP rightly says what is to be done about this government. There are still good people trying to do good do the right thing to help. Socialism needs to spring forth.

The back's a bit wonky but I can't see that!
Nothing can be done about any government until a General Election.
Socialism was roundly rejected by voters last time around.

No, it can't be - I agree. I also agree that the voters rejected socialism in the last election (as did I). However, I'm not sure that they actually voted for what they've got now. To be honest, I don't think the voting public ever votes for any -isms or big ideas. They're remarkably ignorant about politics, unless something affects them,
Hello Ladies - am not quite old enough for Pension Credit as yet, they have just removed my Income Related ESA so am no longer entitled to any of those things, although I was getting my feet done via the NHS but they are shut!! No reason why they should be shut, am hardly breathing over them! Dentist has removed all my teeth due to Sjogrens Syndrome, have been shut since and have since lost my entitlement, so no teeth going forwards!
I am definitely getting al I am entitled to - have been to every charity there is for help, but am in a very peculiar situation sadly ....
At least I should lose a bit of weight on Monday as they are removing my kidney!
Grany totally agree with your post of 23.15.
I meant universal credit I knew it was something credit ha.
Thanks Curlywhirly

I have a feeling that MiY won't be entitled to any more Universal Credit than she's already getting, although she might be entitled to a loan to help with the mortgage, although that will need to be repaid. I checked on the NHS low income scheme and she's probably not entitled to that because you need an income below £4,000 a year (ie the maximum Universal Credit).
MadeinYorkshire have you had a recent benefit check since the income-related ESA was removed?

I don't know why you think austerity makes it harder for people to only have children they can afford ! I also don't know why you call the government criminal. I remember the last Labour government on losing the election leaving a note to say 'sorry there's no money left'. There is no reason for anyone to starve in this country. There was also a programme which showed that people can get an advance on their benefit and do not need to wait weeks for it!! You have obviously been indoctrinated to think the way you do but you should be able to make your own decisions about the injustice of Socialism. We certainly don't need it to 'spring forth'. We have already had an example of Socialist behaviour and certainly don't need anyone like that involved in running the country !

Janpt Universal Credit is paid five weeks in arrears. Claimants can indeed receive an advance, but it's in the form of a repayable loan, so people then have to lose some of the pittance they receive.
That's not indocrination, by the way. It's fact.

The maximum amount of Universal Credit is currently £94 a week until next April, when it will revert to £74 a week. Out of that, people have to pay a proportion of council tax, probably some rent, utility bills, transport, food and any other essentials. These days people have to have some form of internet connection because benefits are claimed online, so they'll need a phone/tablet as a minimum. People who can manage on that long-term really should be offered a job in the Treasury because they're obviously very good at housekeeping.

Sorry!
I'd far rather discuss democracy and Cromwell/Civil War, but nobody seems interested.
Growstuff - yes had a change in circumstances, my daughter moved out so I reapplied for my Severe Disability Premium which I can't have because I withdrew some of my pension to keep me afloat ....
Is there any way you could take a lodger MadeinYorkshire? The rent for furnished room up to £7500pa is tax free.
Jantpt, you are the poster in this discussion, who has been "indoctrinated to think in a certain way".
You're posts are extremely judgemental and your views seem to have been heavily influenced by the kind of poverty porn programmes which any decent person would reject as cruel and aimed to show the people who take part in a dark light.

I am not naive enough to believe a word of the propaganda that comes out of China EV
I think we cannot continue with the lock down approach to dealing with the virus. More people are dying from other things now than the virus, we are creating a disastrous situation for our children's future and that of our grandchildren. We need to look more toward supporting vulnerable people and start a gradual return to a more normal way of life for others.
Couldn't agree more, soda pop.

I saw the programme about a job centre which showed a man drawing his advance out of a cash machine which was over £500 and smirking about going to spend the lot. It should be made harder for people like that to be given such a large amount in one go and questions should be asked about what the money is spent on with receipts to show. Social workers should be trained to know when it's better to be cruel in order to be kind.

I had my hair cut in the garden. Washed it myself, let my hairdresser come into the garden by the side gate, we both wore masks. She cut the back and sides (I do the fringe so no face-to-face), then she left, and I washed it again and then blowdried it myself. First proper cut since February.
Sorry but if I didnt laugh I would cry. It would make you despair but taking one look at marcus rashfords twitter feed shows that most people all across the country are responding in the opposite manner. Thank god.

I did not need to be indoctrinated to know the difference between right and wrong, justice and injustice, unacceptable words to use if you are the Deputy leader of a political party and carrying out your rule in the House of Commons. I did not need to watch a programme to know why some people are in a situation where they cannot afford to feed their children. It's pretty obvious.
