Crikey. I’ve just Wikipedia’d Len McCluskey! He’s been threatening to disaffiliate unite from Labour for years. Was responsible for Ed Milliband being chosen over David.. Then fell out with him. Oldtimer, I think you and he will be very happy together!

I honestly don’t understand why the leader of a very large union should not be well paid. And champagne is really nice and far too good to be only drunk by capitalists.

I have no idea what the salary of Len McCluskey would be, but he leads an organisation of over one and a quarter million members and his annual remittance for that is debated on and approved by the Executive Committee which is the highest lay member committee in the organisation. That I learned from all what has been sent to me since joining the union.

Len McCluskey the General Secretary of Unite wishes for the Labour Party and union movement to remain as one joint political organisation so as to be a single electable body for the left of politics in Britain. However, in his actions, Starmer is making it increasingly difficult for McCluskey's message to carry weight within Unite and he is also shortly to retire. Howard Beckett a hard left Executive Committee member is standing for election to replace McCluskey and he has made it very clear that should he be elected he would fight for the Unite Union to break with the present Labour Party.

Steve Turner who is very much in the political mould of McCluskey has been favourite to be elected as his replacement, but due to Starmer's recent actions and behaviour Taylors election seems far less likely and should the election of Beckett come about the Unite Union will move hard to the left and in that away from Starmer's Labour Party.

So, what happens in the Unite Union may well decide whether the left of politics in Britain has one or two parties seeking support at the next General Election, a situation that Starmer has brought about.

The Bakers and Rail unions are also to ballot their members on whether to break with the present Labour party and a large group of Corbyn supporters have begun legal action against Starmer regarding the suspension and removal of the Whip from Corbyn.

Yes, Unite really are an interesting and outright campaigning organisation. Very glad I joined as there is a huge amount of information to be had on all sorts of matters once you are a member. you can read subjects from other members who have a very different but dedicated point of view.

But is it democratic that someone like McCluskey wields so much power when it comes to choosing Labour leaders etc. Anyway, congratulations Oldtimer in turning an semi anti Tory thread into an anti Labour one. And you wonder why Labour don’t win elections any more. Anyone would actually wonder what side you’re on. And how do you feel about Johnson dressing up and doing photo shoots all the time?

Unite having an input into the election Labour leaders is all part of the party being one joint body with the trade unions and other organisations, well, at least for now.

As for Boris having photoshoots and giving interviews while in Hi-Vis jacket etc at workplaces. I feel it makes him appear acceptable and in touch in the eyes of many who perhaps do not take a deep interest in politics. Opposed to that is Starmer's suited Westminster based approach, but that is where I came in on this thread.

I think politicians have been aware of this ( and doing this) for a very long time.

lemon no politician has (as the thread title says) ever presented themselves in so many different outfits/situations before. There has always been the idea that politicians had to kiss babies and make speeches, but Boris has brought something new to the issue. That is the ability to pose and perform forthe camera without actually saying (or doing) anything at all. It's the cult of personality brought to politics.

I agree with your post trisher and cult is very much the operative word. It sucks people in, they implicitly believe in it and totally accept the accompanying rituals.
It is clever marketing, media driven and orchestrated by a huge team of image makers. The same applies to celebrities, it's how it is these days.

He has been doing it for 20 plus years, it was what the whole Have I got News For You thing was about, its what using his first name only is about.

By the same token Rishi is heading that way somewhat.
