New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

What I can't understand is now certain posters seem to know exactly the percentage of people who wish they had voted diferently, Has there been a national poll that has given this information? If not, how does anybody definitely know what every person of voting age thinks? Newspaper statistics, even in the sainted Guardian can, shock horror, be inaccurate! Everyone I know is a pleased as can be to be finally free from the bully boys that make up the EU.

It’s who you mix with probably. Polls should be more objective.

Jaberwok Sat 02-Jan-21 17:18:38

Oh here we go again, veiled insults. I could say the same about you, but tbh, when people are so ill mannered, I simply can't be bothered.

What on earth are you talking about!!

Most of the people I mix with and live near are remain voters and are aghast at the government, but I wouldn’t say that is an objective assessment unlike polls which are.

Callistemon Sat 02-Jan-21 17:23:32

Everyone I know is a pleased as can be to be finally free from the bully boys that make up the EU.

Many people I know aren't although some are.

However, it is dependent on WHY those polled are not happy with the deal.

Smileless2012 Sat 02-Jan-21 17:41:58

I was thinking the same thing Jaberwok, thought I must have missed the national poll.

I live with a remain voter who has been aghast at the EU's attitude following the referendum result and would have voted leave, had there been another referendum.

biba70 Sat 02-Jan-21 17:47:32

goodness how will Brexiter feel if Boris bulldozes the White Cliffs of Dover?

Smileless2012 Sat 02-Jan-21 17:48:13

When there's a poll on any given subject, the results are the % of those polled not a % of, for example everyone of voting age
which is why they are often misleading.

MaizieD Sat 02-Jan-21 17:50:25

Really?

83% of the population think Johnson has made a real mess of the Deal- and 73% of Brexiters are satisfied with it- what an indictement!
and 73% of Brexiters are NOT satisfied with it.

^ ^ helps.
David had no choice but to quote the wrong figures
Yes he did
Better than perpetuating a mistake which someone immediately corrected.

But of course, I knew you'd argue
???

And I suppose I should have known that you would nit pick. It was perfectly obvious what he was referring to.

LauraNorder Sat 02-Jan-21 17:50:43

I am very pleased, as are 100% of my friends who voted to leave the EU and also most of those who voted to remain are saying that they are glad it is over and we must move on.
I have a large group of calm, intelligent and democratic friends of all ages. I don’t personally know anyone who threatens to aggressively campaign to overturn the will of the people.

Jaberwok Sat 02-Jan-21 17:53:57

Why would Boris do that biba? has he threatened to? I must have missed that as well as the nationwide poll!

Oh, for heaven's sake, biba, please give us a link to the poll you are quoting. It might stop this pointless bickering.

As has often been said here on GN if so many people were against Brexit, why did the Lib Dems do so badly in the last GE when they were campaigning for us to stay.

Casdon Sat 02-Jan-21 18:01:24

Jaberwok your comment about everybody you know being pleased as can be to finally free from the bully boys that make up the EU did make me smile. This was what it brought to mind:

``Certainly, my dear, nobody said there were; but as to not meeting with many people in this neighbourhood, I believe there are few neighbourhoods larger. I know we dine with four and twenty families. '' Nothing but concern for Elizabeth could enable Bingley to keep his countenance’.

Surely if you only mix with people who think exactly the same as you do, you are disqualified from having an informed view of the situation?

Jaberwok Sat 02-Jan-21 19:10:05

Oh dear, now some body knows who I mix with, which disqualifies me from having an informed opinion! Actually you don't know anything about me, still less who I mix with and why, anymore than I do you! I don't have to explain myself to you or anyone else, so lets leave it at that?

Casdon Sat 02-Jan-21 19:14:59

You opened yourself up to it by what you said so vehemently I’m afraid, but I agree probably best left at that.

Callistemon Sat 02-Jan-21 19:18:47

Not satisfied.
73% are not satisfied; biba made that clear.

And I suppose I should have known that you would nit pick. It was perfectly obvious what he was referring to.

No bickering - it was a typo, then corrected.
Not everyone reads every post apparently.

I'm renowned for my nitpickery.

MaizieD Sat 02-Jan-21 19:57:12

Aaah. This little deflection. Was it strategic?

Seem to have lost sight altogether of the difficulties of post Brexit trade for importers and exporters both...

Anyone like to comment?

Anyone like to say that they'll have to learn to live with it, in that truly empathetic Leaver manner?

As has often been said here on GN if so many people were against Brexit, why did the Lib Dems do so badly in the last GE when they were campaigning for us to stay.

Maybe because of our voting system. I’m a paid up member of the Lib Dems & have voted Labour at the last 3 general elections. I have no choice - I live in a marginal which does switch between Labour and Tories. We have a very good Labour MP at the moment & I was happy to lend him my vote.

With Lib Dems having been so punished at previous (pre-Brexit) elections and FPTP it is often impossible for their supporters to vote for them. I cannot vote a Lib Dem into my constituency but I can keep a Tory out.

If we had PR I suspect the Lib Dems would gain a far larger percentage of the vote.
