I suppose Starmer's poll ratings could improve

I really like Owen Jones.

He has calmed down and now puts across some excellent points

Maybe he could go into politics.

Someone mentioned politics isn't a popularity contest but I think in many ways, it is.

How someone speaks, presents themselves, looks. These things all matter to a lot of people. And yes, of course it should just be on the manifesto and what people look like is irrelevant but in today's society it does matter

Charisma is important as well. People who don't take politics particularly seriously will notice if a politician is charismatic. And they'll vote for them.

Boris and Corbyn buck the trend but Corbyn held an appeal for the youth.

Boris exudes optimism and can be amusing

I'm no fan of Boris but I think that unless Keir gets replaced before the next election they'll go down like a lead balloon.

I always thought that Andy Burnham would have beaten Theresa May.

Maybe he'll stand in time for the next election.

Won’t bother.

Yes agree with you Owen Jones has calmed down interviewed many on his YouTube channel.

That’s what I said Lin52 and got a ticking off!

Callistemon Sat 08-May-21 21:55:03

Owen Jones? No.

Although perhaps leader of the breakaway Labour1900 Party? He may appeal to the few but not the majority needed to win an election.

Blossoming Sat 08-May-21 22:05:13

Agree*Callistemon*. I don’t think OJ has the staying power.

Oh my God I have found the only people in the world who like Owen Jones. I mean this is satire surely.

You found me before I was lost.

What is satirical about it?

Starmer's only been a politician for a few years, so he doesn't have much experience. He may improve with time, but he needs to get tougher. It's not a good time for party politics at the moment, so he's not in a good place. I think he's a decent, honest guy and we need to give him a chance, but whether he's the man for the job I'm not sure he's dynamic enough. Personally, I like Andy Burnham and would've liked him to be leader.

Galaxy Sat 08-May-21 22:37:53

Because hes so awful. The left hate him because he tried to dump Corbyn, the centre think he is the worst of that part of the party and women dislike him because he is complete misogynist. I just cant imagine who you think he would appeal to.

Gannygangan Sat 08-May-21 22:43:35

I like him! I used to find him irritating but he's improved a lot and I find him interesting and personable. He makes some very good points.

He's a misogynist? Are we talking about the same person?

His million+ followers on Twitter can't all be there because they hate him.

Casdon Sat 08-May-21 22:44:53

Galaxy I agree - to quote my mum, ‘He’s more mouth than trousers’.

Galaxy Sat 08-May-21 22:47:42

Yes an absolute misogynist. He spends a large part of his Twitter life encouraging pile ons on the women who disagree with him. I am afraid you dont know him well if you dont know about how many many women feel about him. Crikey mention owen Jones on the feminist section of MN and see the response.

Gannygangan Sat 08-May-21 22:58:28

Well I have never heard him refer to as a misogynist before and after a brief search couldn't find much evidence.

He's tweeted today in support of Angela Rayner

And I found this article. But there's not an abundance of evidence. Maybe you can find more when you get a minute

Perhaps look at writings by Suzanne Moore, Julie Bindel, Janice Turner or pop over to MN.

suziewoozie Sun 09-May-21 00:09:15

Owen Jones blocked me on Twitter. It is a badge of honour. He is beyond awful.

Grany Sun 09-May-21 06:30:47

I've not hear of him as a misogynistic either Grannygangan

Here is a video telling men to be respectful of women

Men need to stop being violent, rather than women keeping safe

Well Said Owen.

Owen has a twin sister that he loves.

Loving your twin sister has nothing to do with whether whether you’re a misogynist or not.

suziewoozie Sun 09-May-21 08:02:14

Lots of people are on the left of politics like me and they are utter s****. And misogynists , I’m unaware of their love or otherwise for their sisters ?

Galaxy Sun 09-May-21 08:41:08

Yes being on the left or being in the centre or being anywhere on a particular political spectrum doesnt make you a good person. As many of us have learnt to our cost this last couple of years.

Exactly - Owen Jones is not a good person. I think when he first came on the scene he was a breath of fresh air but once he picked up and ran with TWAW he became unbearable.

Galaxy Sun 09-May-21 08:53:29

Yes I have rarely seen a man who treats women with such contempt. It has been one of the harshest lessons of my later life. I actually cant believe I was so naive.

Sarnia Sun 09-May-21 09:39:06

Sir Kier Starmer's plus point is that he isn't Jeremy Corbyn. If Starmer wants to make the Labour Party a viable option for voters then he has to address the issues that affect them directly and not get bogged down with the price of Boris's wallpaper.
