What I think will happen tomorrow

That the SNP will do well
That Labour in Wales will do well
That Laurence Fox and Shaun Bailey will be humiliated in London
That my local council will stay LD
That Labour will hang onto its Mayors and do badly elsewhere

This is not a difficult prediction

Labour lost Hartlepool

52.5% of people voted for Labour in Hartlepool in 2017 and 37.7% people voted for Labour in 2019, a figure which has now collapsed to 28.7%.

This is the lowest vote share for a Labour candidate since 1943
This is a 16% swing from 2019 to the Tories
The Tory vote is up 23% since 2019

Some people will blame Corbyn for this result

Think the hard left Momentum is to blame. People dislike them as much as the hard right.

Lin52 it would really help if you referenced the post/poster you are responding to. You could use the Quote facility. As it is, I often can’t make head nor tail of your posts

I do beg your pardon, am new on here and didn’t know about the Quote. Don’t worry have learnt it now.

Good grief MazieD! Whatever echo chamber you are in must be an alarming experience. Where I live (NW) we are progressive, pro the idealism of socialism, with a small s, and despite the pandemic, there is a huge expansion in jobs, a steady growth of independent businesses, well cared for green spaces, improved living conditions for renters, and support for working people of all stripes. Many really interesting initiatives to benefit our community have not only been proposed but initiated. It's great to live in a city that's on the rise. And all thanks to Labour.

Same can be said about my area, very involved with renewables, producing more green electricity than anywhere else in the country, business moving to the area, film . All under a Conservative council.

General election is whats need but they darent have one.

Is it that the people of Hartlepool feel that getting on for fifty years under Labour was more than enough time for them to show what they’re made of, in terms of getting things done?

A journalist was in the town earlier, speaking to people about how they voted and why.
Those who had voted Tory made the point that Boris said he would deliver Brexit and he did. He was also praised for the vaccine rollout success, so they could see for themselves which political party had a proven track record for getting things done.

Interestingly the journalist also noted how many people referred to the PM as Boris which I think is an indication of how they feel about him.

It’s been said many times that people don’t know what Labour stands for any more, other than latching on to the latest daft bandwagon which has no significance whatsoever for the majority of people.

I thought Kier Starmer looked like the rabbit in the headlights.
As in: where the hell did that come from ?

Why was it a treat ? I’ve got a decent bottle of Bordeaux waiting for me this evening, that’s a treat.?

Is that to drown your sorrows or to celebrate that it wasn’t worse. That’s if it could have been ?

I like your last sentence ?
Personally, I’m over the moon that the people of Hartlepool have given the Labour Party the finger.
The Westminster elite have had contempt for these people for how long?
But now at long last those people have shown their contempt for the Labour Party.

Surely the Westminster elite comprises more than one party? And it's not the LP that has the majority. Or have the Tories suddenly developed a true understanding of the working poor?

I have no sorrows to drown - no surprises overall as yet.

Keir Starmer will be welcomed in Wales, Labour are doing well here, bucking the trend in England and increasing vote share in a number of the seats declared so far, I’m glued to my seat. The nations of the UK are dividing politically, it’s going to be interesting to see what happens next.

Watching Grant Shapps on tonight’s briefing looks like he was in the new briefing room.

It is being reported that it’s tighter than expected for the London Mayoral election.

"Labour cannot ignore 'verdict of the people', says Lord Adonis."

Hmm.

The same Lord Adonis who is still having a mental breakdown over the EU referendum in 2016 and was more than willing to ignore the 'verdict of the people'.

I do think that those folks who do not/have not voted/supported Conservatives are at a loss regarding what they or their MP’s, Councillors (or prospective MP’s Councillors) can now do to engage with the electorate.

Maybe listening to them would be a good starting place?

Casdon Fri 07-May-21 18:34:26

I didn't vote Conservative and I'm not any kind of loss. The Conservative county councillor lost his seat - probably because he didn't listen to the electorate until a couple of months ago. Serves him right!

growstuff Fri 07-May-21 19:11:19

It would be great if my Conservative MP lost her seat at the GE because I'm not sure she even knows where the constituency she allegedly represents is situated. Sadly, her majority is so huge I doubt if it will happen.
