Do you want a halo Ellianne?

David Frost proving to be as dim as the rest of them - he didn’t realise how much disruption Brexit would cause to N.I.

Plus, if it’s so great why do the government need to employ an “ advisor” on huge salary to discover and highlight anything positive about Brexit ?

Don't be silly growstuff. I am not going to lower myself to argue.
Just to say, I do "give a stuff" about others.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 19-May-21 07:22:53

Ellianne your generosity is admirable, well done you ???

Ellianne Wed 19-May-21 07:29:59

Thank you, GrannyGravy, but I doubt I am the only one to share their good fortune.
Sadly I cannot change Macron's stupid new rules for those concerned, sadly I cannot make covid disappear for the world, but we can all spread a bit of happiness for others.

Urmstongran Wed 19-May-21 07:33:11

I always say that ‘money makes nice people nicer’ because it can and your generosity bears me out on that Ellianne. When we are fortunate in life it’s good to share.
?

vegansrock Wed 19-May-21 07:38:13

It’s good to share - maybe tell that to the U.K. government cutting foreign aid

Mamie Wed 19-May-21 07:40:47

Ellianne you of all people should know that these are not "Macron's new rules". They are rules for third country nationals now being applied to the UK. The same, but more expensive in Spain, similar in Italy.
The application of these rules is entirely as a consequence of Brexit.
We are upset about them because it will make visits from our children and grandchildren harder and will rule out spontaneity.
It isn't the end of the world, but the things that we laughed off as young people are a bit harder when you are older.
Il faut faire avec.... but it doesn't make life any easier.

Ellianne Wed 19-May-21 07:47:50

I do feel sorry for you Mamie, and yes excusez-moi the rules are new to us in the UK as a result of Brexit, not Macron.
It's not the inconvenience of form filling, it's not the cost of the paperwork ....... those things are do able. It's the human aspect where family, particularly grandchildren are concerned. And yes I do understand that and wish I had a magic wand.

Lucca Wed 19-May-21 07:52:38

So we’ve agreed the new rules are down to Brexit yes ?

Mamie Wed 19-May-21 07:55:08

Thank you Ellianne that means a lot. We chose Normandy to make it quick and easy for family visits and this rule will make it harder. Our French friends are all shocked by it, as you know, family is hugely important here.
On a brighter note our son is about to become Spanish so there will be no form filling involved and I have told him he will be responsible for international parent rescue. ?

It's not Macron's "stupid new rules". It's about UK citizens being treated like all other non-EU visitors.

What has your boasting about your own generosity got to do with restrictions placed on UK citizens because the UK is no longer part of the EU?

MawBe Wed 19-May-21 08:52:30

What has your boasting about your own generosity got to do with restrictions placed on UK citizens because the UK is no longer part of the EU?

And what have sneery comments (not you) about flats abroad got to do with anything anyway?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 19-May-21 08:59:32

growstuff you see boasting whereas others just see sharing

MerylStreep Wed 19-May-21 09:02:03

This is GN at its worst. Genuine kind people are castigated for just wanting to help less fortunate people. Shame on you all.

Totally agree.

Alegrias1 Wed 19-May-21 09:32:28

OK, help me out here....

Its OK to tell people to try harder when they don't understand a post, or to accuse people of not caring about the underprivileged with no evidence at all for that, or to call other countries' Heads of State stupid when they have nothing to do with the issue at hand. But its not acceptable to point out humblebragging...

I wish somebody would just write the rules down for me....sad

GrannyGravy13 Wed 19-May-21 09:38:39

Oh dear would you accuse all folks who do good deeds and share them as humble bragging ?

I would love to share what my family and friends have done throughout Covid and lockdown, but I will be damned if I am going to be accused of humble bragging !!!!

Alegrias1 Wed 19-May-21 09:46:11

Who accused you of that GG13?

Many people do good deeds but not all of them tell everyone about them on public internet forums.... smile

Nothing at all wrong with that of course....I'm just trying to sort out what (who) we can criticise and what (who) we can't. Although I'm being disingenuous really....I know the rule hmm

MerylStreep Wed 19-May-21 09:47:55

GrannyGravy
‘Twas ever thus on GN. Nothings changed.
We have to accept that there are some very bitter people out there who just despise people with money.
Btw to all those people: I didn’t steal my money from anyone.
Like most of us we worked hard and got lucky.

Nobody accused me, another poster has been though.

I just find it rather like a school playground at its worst!

Alegrias1 Wed 19-May-21 09:51:32

"Twas ever thus"....you mean all those posts about the Good Old Days on GN aren't true. shock

Who are you suggesting stole their money MerylStreep ?
Not me I hope. The things people say on GN, honestly.

(off to nurse my wrath to keep it warm.....)

Alegrias1 Wed 19-May-21 09:52:01

Lucca

So we’ve agreed the new rules are down to Brexit yes ?

Too simplistic though really Lucca smile. This country decided to Brexit and in doing so became a "third country". These rules apply to all third countries.

So all those who are complaining but voted to leave did not know what they were voting for or they would not be complaining now.

So the rules are because we chose to be a third country. I didn't and over half the population didn't. Some of the countries in the UK didn't but we now know that some of those that did had not bothered to understand what it meant.

So, if they want to look like they knew they are going to have to stop blaming "anyone but themselves". That person doesn't exist.
