I do wonder- is this what the Brexiters wanted?

Free Movement of people agreed with India in exchange for Deal?

Alegrias1 Tue 18-May-21 21:00:53

People can use their hard earned money to do whatever they like. I certainly do. And I was always taught to appreciate what I have.

But now that everyone seems to have decided I posted something that I didn't, I'll just toddle off and let you all get on with it.

Urmstongran Tue 18-May-21 21:03:23

Hmm. That’s convenient ?

Callistemon Tue 18-May-21 21:07:15

Some folks horizons are further afield than the EU, they are used to paperwork and visas.

We got taken to the front of the immigration queue last time when entering Australia.

"You British?"
"Yes"
" Here you go then, we'll open another gate for you""

I think we just looked old and weary grin

Urmstongran Tue 18-May-21 21:11:10

❤️ it Calli!

Callistemon Tue 18-May-21 21:12:48

I'm delighted for anybody who's got a lovely apartment in any part of the world to which they can toddle off and have a lovely time.

No, just visiting family. Their spare bedroom.

I'm delighted for those who have family within a short distance too.

It doesn't mean we don't have empathy or give help to those we know are struggling and in need. One doesn't negate the other. Should I sell my house and donate the proceeds to a homeless charity? Thus rendering myself homeless and able to feel more empathy?

Kali2 Tue 18-May-21 21:25:01

Peasblossom

But Kali was complaining about a lack of empathy. Nobody cares about her problems. People are just selfish and only concerned about what they want.

It does work both ways. What you give you shall receive??

My problems? I have never talked about anything being 'my problem'- but about the many others who are currently seeing their dreams dashed and are very hurt by this.

@15.50 today.
Ive been trying to think of a way of putting this that isn’t rude ....... but I can’t think of one so apologies first
You said it. It’s there for all to see.

Callistemon Tue 18-May-21 21:30:28

I don't think it is Kalis problem in particular.
I think people have empathy where people endure real hardship too.

It's just that this is added niggling bureaucracy which, as I posted previously, wasn't apparent pre-EU but which those who have family further afield are used to negotiating.

It's annoying but not insurmountable.

Urmstongran Tue 18-May-21 21:32:10

Peasblossom - Kali2 is not only a (? Swiss) Europhile she is champion of Remainers disappointed by the Referendum result of 2016.

We had a referendum and Leave won.
We then had a GE in the UK and Leave won again (Get Brexit Done).

Yes it’s sad for those affected and disenfranchised by the result. But if the EU membership was so wonderful Leave wouldn’t have won (twice) so decisively would it?

In life - nothing stays the same.
We know this.

Callistemon Tue 18-May-21 21:34:46

A few years ago I heard Polly Toynbee talk about some research she'd done that showed that the more "comfortably off" people were, the more they thought they were ordinary and everyone was like them.

Oh to be as comfortably off as Polly Toynbee!!

You had plenty to say in 2016. The ferries/ planes will stop working therefore making it difficult for you to visit your children/grandchildren in the uk.
It’s all there in print.

I missed the bit where Kali2 said she was Swiss. Would you like to point me to it?

This thread has become Platitude Paradise.

And British too I believe.
Dual nationality.
Like many of my family. Very sensible.

And don’t forget ‘the isotopes’ MerylStreep.
Armageddon was approaching.

Quite incredible. Yes, where, please?

You must just think we’re as green as we’re cabbage looking.
You’ve been rumbled.
Days ago.

I think my last post will get me reported. By someone.
And a lifetime ban will be slapped upon me.

It’s happened before to. A. N. Other.

Urmstongran

How do i spend my time Dinahmo?

Good heavens, there’s wine to be drunk, people to see, meals to be eaten, books to be read, walks or swims to be had, places of interest to visit. Like most people’s lives really. Just very little housework and no gardening!
#lazygran

Thank you.

Kali2 Tue 18-May-21 22:53:47

Weirder, and weirder.

*What is wrong is the 'I am alright Jack attitude' re others who have made different choices. Who have worked hard and done lots of planning, and now find all the goalposts have moved. Now THAT smacks of hypocrisy and total lack ot empathy for others.^
It is not a case of 'I am alright Jack attitude' at all.

The goalposts are the same for Urmstongran as for others.

It's a question of riskzztaking too. I remember durhamjen's words when Brexit was approaching that it depends on your attitude to risk. I thought about that a lot.
I am Mrs Cautious but I'd love to be braver.

And if we all had crystal balls we'd worry even more.

I do to seem to remember durhamjen supporting brexit though.

MaizieD Tue 18-May-21 23:57:21

I don't think she did, MayBee

MayBee70 Wed 19-May-21 00:05:25

Sorry. Late at night. Of course she didn’t ! That’s why it irritated me that she was being used as an example. Thanks Maizie..

Ellianne Wed 19-May-21 01:22:17

I think people who accuse others of an "I'm alright Jack attitude" have got it completely wrong. Urmstongran has shown no complacency or desire to get ahead on this thread. She is simply making a choice to enjoy life. Owning a second home seems to rankle so many.

I am currently renting a large house in Cornwall and have invited a couple to stay who cannot get to see their daughter in Australia until goodness knows when. On my return to Devon in June every weekend is booked with people from London staying at my house who cannot get away for one reason or another.
I might be alright, but I share my good fortune with others who are less fortunate than I am. I will also offer my holiday home abroad for free this year (if allowed) for just a cleaning charge, it is the least I can do.
Small gestures maybe, but that's what makes the world go round.

growstuff Wed 19-May-21 01:37:29

In my case, it's absolutely nothing to do with owning a property abroad. It's to do with people who couldn't give a stuff about others. In some cases, it's also to do with people who can't even get their facts right. Many people have been affected by the new regulations brought in by EU countries, but as they're in a minority and they don't affect some, apparently people aren't supposed to be bothered. Well, yes they are and have every right to be annoyed.
