Dianne Abbott gaffes again

I see Ms Abbott has claimed the female activist seriously injured at a party at 3am was shot due to her campaigning for equal rights for black people. Turns out she was shot by black males shooting from a car - probably gang related.

I wonder if the lady herself would still want the police to be defunded seeing as they are working hard to find the culprits. Maybe if they had been stopped and searched before they were able to drive about shooting indiscriminately it wouldn’t have happened.

I wonder if Ms Abbott will rectify her initial statement?

JaneJudge I haven’t seen any evidence of anyone on here saying white people are being ‘got at’ as you put it. If a person of colour and an MP at that, makes a judgement that this shooting was because the lady concerned was campaigning for equal rights on behalf of black people and that judgement is wrong there should be a retraction.

Addressing black on black violence would be far more beneficial than trying to divert attention away from such a serious problem.

Until there is any evidence about why she was shot I think dismissing death. threats against an activist like Sasha Johnson as irrelevant because the shooter was black is just an example of racism. Just as harping on about black on black violence rather than inner city violence and gang culture is racist.
If death threats were made (and many have said they were) they should form part of any investigation and shouldn't be dismissed. And no one should be castigated because they raise the fact that death threats were made.

I am not a huge fan of hers, mostly because she never seems to have the full facts and figures when being questioned on a topic. Having said that she is well thought of by her constituents and has kept her seat for many years. It seems this poor lady was in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is a court case on at the moment where a young Middle Eastern girl with a promising future as a lawyer was shot by a hitman who was targeting a boss from a tyre company. She was in his line of fire and was shot and killed. Tragic events, both of them. Unfortunately, with Dianne Abbot saying the shooting was due to her campaigning, she ignites those who will jump aboard the 'racism' train. It has nothing to do with it. It was gang related.

tickingbird Wed 26-May-21 10:48:10

Trisher yet again you start accusing others of racism whenever Dianne Abbott or any issue involving a black person is being discussed. Dianne Abbott has, as per usual, got this wrong. It’s been stated quite clearly that Sasha wasn’t the target. The police have stated there’s no evidence she was the target. Very similar to the New Year’s Eve party in Birmingham several years ago when young girls were shot and killed by black men shooting at rivals. I’d rather the powers that be try and solve the problems rather than have their hands tied by those that shout racism at every opportunity.

JaneJudge Wed 26-May-21 10:58:05

It is a fair enough point to make though. If someone is targeted because they are in a minority group or because they are a certain race, something which will happen regular, it is fair to question as a first point of call- whether the attack on this woman was racially motivated and due to her activism, even if that assumption is wrong.

There have been posts on this thread about white people feeling 'got at' but I'm loathe to go through and quote people as it just causes upset.

I have no strong feelings about Diane Abbott one way or the other, she is not my MP so I have no knowledge of whether she serves her constituents well. However I do think she should not have posted that tweet before knowing the details. It seems she just assumed this was an attack on a woman for her activism.

None of us know what really happened and I would rather wait until the police have finished their investigation before jumping to conclusions

Like everyone else, I hope the young woman makes a good recovery

That's what I did, same style but different colours, but my boss did point it out to me; I told him he was very observant ?

You could have claimed it as your "look" for the day.

No-one else noticed or were too polite to say so.

The elephant in the room gun and knife crime is primarily black on black in London.

Very true, and also the case here too, as it was reported that a group of four black men entered the party in the back garden and did the shooting. It may or may not have been the case that she was the target.

She needs to go - she has been a liability from day one. I wonder who will have the courage to sack her.

Now there's a profound understanding of the electoral system!
She's an MP people voted for her. She can only lose an election no one can sack her.

Callistemon Wed 26-May-21 19:31:45

She may be a popular, efficient and caring constituency MP but if her TV interviews are not doing her any favours, I wonder who it is who keeps booking her to express her opinions on air?

Jack Monroe has an interesting take on the treatment of Ms Abbott by the media:

Good for her, I say.

i once cycled to work, wearing cut-away at the ankle trousers with stirrup strap, so showing quite a bit of sock.
in my haste i had inadvertently put on one black and one white sock.

I regularly wear odd socks deliberately. If the dog has eaten one, or one is lost in the wash I see no reason to discard the other. There again, I am not a public figure.

Callistemon Wed 26-May-21 19:55:52

Yes, I do know about her impressive record but she does have a problem with interviews at the moment and that needs to be recognised. Perhaps she should not be booked to comment on TV when she clearly is having a struggle with the media at the moment.

And yes - she does scrub up well, even if her shoes don't match which can happen to us all.

trisher Wed 26-May-21 19:55:56

Thanks for that Blinko a great statement about a fantastic woman. I wanted to cry for her.

Remember, this is from a woman who once managed to wear two shoes from different pairs!!!!?

I did that once (I went to work in them).

But TV reporters tend not to ask me my opinion so it doesn't really matter.

I did as well. DH had been on nights, he came to bed 6.30 I got up for work at 7 and he was asleep. Basically I got dressed in the dark, shoes were same style but different colours.

Just think Luckygirl could have said that to a TV camera!

Luckygirl Wed 26-May-21 22:20:50

Sack her from the cabinet. Clearly she will continue to be an MP as long as people vote for her.

Alegrias1 Wed 26-May-21 22:22:37

She's not in the Cabinet....

She's not even in the Shadow Cabinet...?

theworriedwell Wed 26-May-21 22:23:14

She isn't in the Cabinet. She's a Labour MP, our government (God help us) is Conservative.

What????

What?? Well DC is having fun destroying ABJ so you have a look round desperately thinking oh oh let’s find a Labour person we can have a pop at to make ourselves feel superior again. I know, let’s diss DA. She’s always good for a dig. It’s pathetic schoolgirl bullying. Find the weak girl and pull her hair.
