Parliament today. Mask wearing. Or not….

Has anyone noticed that, in parliament today, the Conservative benches seem to be full of people not wearing masks whereas the opposition benches consist of people wearing them. Do we have a Republican/Democrat situation in this country where mask wearing is now a political statement?

M0nica, I’m not sure I understand your question. Are you perhaps in a country that doesn’t yet have Covid.

People on both sides were wearing them. Only the front row of the conservatives were not....

I think you need to look footage of that debate again. It isn’t what I saw.

here you go

there is even a video on this one if you are in doubt

As an adult my choice is to continue to protect myself and others. It would be good to see the government choose to do the same thing.

As you state, as adults it's a matter of choice. Some choose to wear masks, others not to. I have had 6-7 eye infection since wearing a mask and will only wear one if requested eg doctors etc. My choice

Wearing a mask is something one does to protect others - hasn’t this been a government message all along? Clearly it’s the socialists among us who have a care for others - the Tories don’t give a fig for anybody but themselves …

The incidence of COVID is now very low and concentrated in certain unvaccinated groups.

I don't see how you can possibly think that, MOnica. This time last year daily reported cases were running at about 1,000 per day, they are now hovering around the 30,000 per day level. Daily reported deaths then were mostly in single figures, now in double and treble figures and rising by about 10% week on week.

Has the population become deadened to the impact of this disease?

Has the population become deadened to the impact of this disease?

Do you know, I think they have. I think people's recent experiences of younger people in their family and friend group having it and not being so ill wont have helped.

We had to get a taxi back from car breakdown, (RAC rules)-driver was wearing a mask, luckily i always have a few new disposable spares in my bag for us as DD did not have any. ?

Nannan2 Fri 20-Aug-21 12:43:17

How does eye infections equate with mask wearing??

Bijou Fri 20-Aug-21 13:30:00

My nephew posted photos of himself and friends at the Boardmasters gathering at Newquay all cuddling one another and not a mask in sight.
On the other hand my 73 year old son after spending a week at the coast with his grand children isolated himself and will take a test before visiting me next week.

It is a fact that in the majority most young people who catch Covid are not particularly ill
Most double vaccinated who now catch it are not seriously ill with very minor symptoms that once upon a time they would not have given a second thought to
As I mentioned before I was out shopping in a local designer outlet it was now far more relaxed with only 50% or less wearing masks. I didn’t bother with one either much more pleasant experience
Unless we get some massive change the doom mongering will naturally decrease

Masks are not essential in my (and many others) opinion. The MPs were simply making political statements as politicians do! Ignore their posturing! We now have very effective vaccines. As scientists find out more and more about Covid and the results of the various studies are evaluated, vaccines will get better and better. The next wave of vaccines are already in development. Masks were not recommended as particularly effective by the government or the WHO at the start of all this. Vaccination is important until we all carry antibodies against the disease. Then I imagine a seasonal jab like there is for ‘flu will be given to the most vulnerable. Discussion is underway in government about this. We have to learn to live with this virus as we do with many others. If wearing a mask for the foreseeable future helps you to feel safe then go ahead! I don’t mind what other people do or think about this as long as they do not expect me to do/think the same as they do and refrain from castigating me for my ‘lack of social responsibility’. I could ( if I was being nasty-which I’m not!) equally criticise much of what they believe after all.

But you would think that they would realise that they are endangering others at this time, not just behaving like toddlers as per usual.

You can still have covid if you’re double vaccinated. And, if you do catch it you will still have a huge viral load that you can pass on to other people. None of us know how well our immune system has responded to the vaccine until we catch covid.

MerylStreep Fri 20-Aug-21 16:56:34

It’s not obligatory in our Doctors now.

"From the outset we've been told by the government and their advisors that masks are to protect others."

That is why some people choose to wear them.

Masks are useless in protecting anyone from disease. There isn’t one single reliable study to prove they protect anyone. There are studies of the harm they inflict on the individual though.

Good comments.??

What nonsense. If you are indoors in a crowded poorly ventilated space you must wear a mask to protect those around you.

Those who flagrantly go unmasked are making as politcal statement - that they don't care a fig for the people around them.

MaizieD Fri 20-Aug-21 18:19:37

Any clues as to what forms your opinion, Amalegra?

Being double vaccinated doesn't stop you getting covid, or passing it on to others.

AGAA4 all restriction have been dropped in the UK so I can’t see there is any confusion

In England, you mean.
You seem a bit confused.

JaneJudge Fri 20-Aug-21 18:42:15

If I looked this rough all the time, I'd wear a mask sad he looks really unwell and even though I dislike him, I do think he isn't sending the right message as a lot of people in this country are out of shape like Boris

Lucca Fri 20-Aug-21 18:45:39

So depressing that people feel they have to follow their political allegiance with something like mask wearing.
