Feeling politically homeless (new thread)

I have never felt as much despair in our politics as I do right now.

The Tory Party currently in power is led by a man who quite clearly isn't up to the job, who is well and truly out of his depth. He could just about bumble and bluster his way ahead pre-pandemic, relying on his staff and ministers to come up with solutions to problems, but that isn't working any more.

The party and its leader are feeding us an absolute load of drivel, issuing countless meaningless soundbites and making equally empty statements about the state of the country that don't stand up to even the most basic scrutiny by anyone with half a brain.
In fact, proper scrutiny of the statements now being made is frankly extremely worrying - the supply problems and the resulting shortages in the shops, both now and for some time to come, are finally being acknowledged, but a narrative is being created to say that this (and the inflation that is set to get worse) are a necessary and expected part of our leaving the EU and ridding ourselves of the cheap labour in order to rid ourselves of uncontrolled immigration, something that we as a country voted for, and for which we must therefore accept the consequences.

Recent statements suggest that they are trying to absolve themselves of all responsibility for both for the depth of the current crises (yes, plural), and of Government responsibility to help ease them.

I fear that we, both the people and businesses struggling as a result of these crises, are being thrown to the wolves.

Meanwhile the Labour Party is in pieces. It is totally fractured, and can't even lead itself at the moment, let alone a country.

As for the Lib Dems - do they even still exist? I doubt if the majority of the population could even answer that question with absolute certainty, so far out of the public eye they seem to have fallen!

The only other party that most people could probably name is the Green Party, but I think it will be some time (especially under the first-past-the-post voting system) before they can be in a position to hold much political sway.

I feel utterly homeless, politically, and really do despair about what is happening in British politics.

Shinamae

Totally given up on the lot of them and now I find myself washed up on the shore of indifference….

And living happily in your nice new summerhouse.?

Tempting Shinamae- but I just can't because it is about my adult children's and my grand-children's future.

Well I’m afraid that’s exactly where I am at the moment

Labour, Greens and maybe the Libdems need to form a coalition. As someone up thread said, the majority do not vote Tory. A chink of light on the horizon however, apparently UKIP is on the move again so there is a small possibility they may split the Tory vote.

That won’t happen now that we have left the EU.It will be a race ( as usual) between the two big parties.
Nobody has to decide anything for the next three years.

I heard one of them talking on LBC on Saturday. They seemed to have every intention of being actively involved in party politics.

Grammaretto Mon 04-Oct-21 17:11:50

Another in Scotland here where PR has made a difference.
The Greens are actually in Government and yes I know they aren't perfect but nobody who goes into politics is.
Power corrupts.

Urmstongran Mon 04-Oct-21 17:37:20

There won’t be any kind of political alliances made. I thought it was just us Brexiteers who believed in ^sunlit uplands and unicorns’!
?

3 years to go - unless of course Boris is riding on a high any time soon and calls a snap election. This is a possibility.

Labour are just eating themselves.
Lib Dems are still a waste of a vote. Sorry.
The Greens? No way José.
The Tories? I’m reserving judgement.

Ooh hang on - what about the Reform Party.
And that other one whose name escapes me. Not Gina Miller’s. Totally ineffective & a waste of a vote for a fringe group.

Urmstongran Mon 04-Oct-21 17:38:40

The Scottish Greens are completely bonkers. Heaven save us from that down here at least!

Kali2 Mon 04-Oct-21 17:56:19

''Labour are just eating themselves.''

yep, agree, and that is the tragedy of it all. Johnson and the Tories know this, and are washing their hands in glee- as they know, more than anyone, that they are in deep, deep terrible doodoo.

Alliances will have to be made, that is the reality. Labour left will never agree.

I truly, deeply despise the current appalling Tories - and yet, if they win again, I will blame the Labour Left even more than the Tories. Because Labour has a real chance, for the first time in a long time- to beat those destructive, tax evading Tories who are prepared to scupper the country and destroy the NHS and abandon 10s of 1000s of the poorest and most vulnerable in society. And Labour is prepared to throw away that chance at opposing this - by fighting each other rather than the above! And come up with the utter nonsense that Starmer is just as bad as any Tory and has the same aims.

I know I have said it before, but I truly despair.

Grammaretto Mon 04-Oct-21 19:10:00

Meanwhile in Scotland:
I am grateful for the influence of the Green pressure on the SNP who need to be kept informed and are far too up themselves.

I am getting old now but when I speak to my young friends and DGC I am aware that integrity and moral fibre is what they are looking for in a leader. We need a strong opposition as well as a competent government. Westminster is lacking in both.

Ro60 Mon 04-Oct-21 22:01:46

Having just watched Panorama it looks like it's not the politicians running the country - they're just the puppets for corrupt businessmen. ?

Rowsie Tue 05-Oct-21 11:14:41

Totally agree! I have no idea who to vote for, they all seem to be useless and although I have resorted to voting for the Green party in the last 2 elections, I rather feel that this is a wasted vote and even their policies don't stand up to scrutiny.

crazygranny Tue 05-Oct-21 11:20:46

I really hope UKIP isn't on the rise as has been suggested. Losing them was the only benefit of the way the Brexit vote went! UKIP was offering respectability to some of the vilest racist elements of our society.
Ever since Blair destroyed the identity of the Labour Party I too have felt politically homeless. I am voting for the Green Party now. At least it has a valid, identifiable purpose. In Germany, it has grown in strength and will be part of the balancing act of the next coalition. It's what I hope for here in the long run.

Hermia46 Tue 05-Oct-21 11:23:48

So agree with these comments, the country feels rudderless and is just drifting. I am despairing at the level of incompetence being shown by the government and their inability to get a grip. A hopeless bunch of middle managers.

MaddyB Tue 05-Oct-21 11:26:18

Goodness! All Tory haters on this thread!! I would just love to know where we would be if Boris had not got us out of the EU. As it was we could manage Covid without the constraints of those unelected EU dictators. And now, if there is any crisis, it is blamed on Brexit! Despite many of the current problems being EU wide. The mind boggles at how Corbyn would have dealt with Covid. And don’t get me started on Sturgeon.

Cagsy Tue 05-Oct-21 11:32:57

There's an organisation called COMPASS that is working with all progressive parties to try and form alliances and have some sort of agreement before another general election. I'm not sure that Labour will get on board though and with the first pass the post system and the tinkering Boris & co are doing eg photo ID, I think we could be stuck with this lots for some time.
I keep hoping the electorate will wake up to what's going on, but it seems apathy reigns.

frenchie Tue 05-Oct-21 11:35:51

Another Tory hater here! How can anyone say Johnson is doing a good job??????

graykat Tue 05-Oct-21 11:39:48

If we were still in the EU we would have full shelves in the supermarket, full petrol pumps, staffed hospitals, abattoirs, farms, restaurants and cafes, better Covid mitigations, easier travel and the right to live, study and work abroad. What has Brexit brought?

Castafiore Tue 05-Oct-21 11:41:34

Iam64 Do you really belive this? Corbyn put forward a traditional social-democratic programme, and tried to include all factions of the party in his shadow cabinet. Most refused to serve, or served then resigned, and plotted to challenge his leadership. Talked down his election prospects around the TV studios. Starmer pledged to keep to Corbyn's programme, and many voted for him as leader because they thought he looked more acceptable to the media, who might actually focus on policies instead of personal attacks. But he's expelled or suspended as many leftists as he can, including many Jewish Labour Party members, and has reneged on all his pledges. That's why he got heckled by a nurse, who wanted to know why he didn't support a pay rise for nurses.

polnan Tue 05-Oct-21 11:44:30

I admit that I have not read all the posts here..

but is it "party"? is it that the quality of people coming to Parliament leaves so much to be desired?

would anyone, really want to be a Politician with the state the world is in?

and it is not just England,, the USof A also.

Nanna58 Tue 05-Oct-21 11:45:38

Anyone who has ambitions to be a politician shouldn’t be allowed to be one , that awful blend of egotism, false self belief and complete lack of common sense and empathy that seems to embody them should render them barred!!! In an ideal world people who excel in say business or health are would be approached regardless of political leanings and offered the appropriate ministerial positions - well I can dream!

soldiersailor Tue 05-Oct-21 11:46:13

MamaCaz has explained things perfectly and these reasons are precisely why, when we had the general election, that instead of voting Tory as I generally do, I simply could not vote at all. My close friend said 'Yes, but you simply HAVE to vote!' My response was to ask that given the choice between Hitler and Stalin which would he choose? I could see that the Tories were turning a nasty shade of Green and as for Corbyn...
But now the chickens are coming home to roost and it seems to me that only the Reform party offers some hope whereas the others are utterly hopeless or totally deluded.

Like in the House of Lords you mean?

Nanna58 Tue 05-Oct-21 11:54:22

If those in the House of Lords fall into my categories above then they shouldn’t be allowed there either- I don’t want useless self serving people in positions anywhere: I’m picky!?

MaggsMcG Tue 05-Oct-21 11:55:04

I wouldn't support the Green Party if it was the last Party in the country. During the last election campaign I really liked their manifesto but then spent three hours trying to get their local candidate to tell me where they would get the money to fulfil all their promises. He would not admit that they would have to raises taxes by a lot, but would not deny it either.

You highlight the problem that all the parties are economically illiterate. As is most of the electorate.

Taxes don't fund spending...
