Keeping Royal Secrets

We are often told on here that despite the financial or democratic problems with the system, having a Royal Family provides continuity and something to fall back in in times of crisis, such as pandemics. So what do we think of this quote from the Sunday Herald this morning, regarding whether certain Royal papers should be released. In this case it should be noted that the papers already belong to belong to the tax payer but we’re not allowed to see the content.

Protecting the dignity of the Queen and working members of the royal family by protecting their privacy in truly private matters preserves their ability to discharge their duties in their fundamental and central constitutional role, not least of unifying the nations (as was seen during the depths of the current pandemic). Roger Smethurst, head of knowledge and information at the Cabinet Office.

On other words, if we know what they were really like in private, we’d never be taken in by their idealised images. They need to keep some things secret because they don’t fit with the image they want to portray.

Thoughts?

It’s very nice to hear your own words Grany, and expressed in a measured way. There is room, I hope, for many different opinions on GN but I always prefer to hear them in a poster’s own words rather than just a link to propaganda, some of which may come across as very extremist. It is the difference between seeing a poster as a real person with their own views rather than as the face of an organisation.

You really just have to take the rough with the smooth, Gsm and stop thinking that the forum should be run to please you.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Nov-21 13:55:18

Have I ever suggested that it should? Bit of a sweeping statement.

Calistemon Thu 25-Nov-21 14:42:11

MaizieD

^Thank you MaizieD^

It's a pleasure, Grany.

I don't share your views on the monarchy or the *Labour Party, but I really don't see why you should be vilified for posting them.

*I do like them better than fascist views, though grin

It is though.

I know your views on economics and your explanations are your own MaizieD not cut and paste jobs.

Calistemon Thu 25-Nov-21 14:44:06

There's some gardening ones too.

Yes, I have chatted to Grany on other threads. ?
Amicably.

But they didn't come into my head unaided, Calistemon. I have sources that I can link to and what they say will be similar to what I say. Or maybe I do a bit of c & p too wink

It's one thing to be bored by what someone is saying; it's another to say that it's just c & p propaganda*. I think it's a bit unfair.

Anniebach

Who has married into the royal family then decided it’s not for them ?

Mark Phillips has never spoken against them.

Wallis Simpson didn’t have a choice.

?

Disingenuous!

Anniebach Thu 25-Nov-21 17:02:41

Wrong Lucca no one has left the royal family with the exception of Mark .Phillips .

Fergie and Diana divorced but certainly didn’t leave the royal family.

Katherine Kent did stop carrying out royal duties because of ill
health so stopped using her title, she hasn’t left the royal family.

Harry and his wife certainly haven’t left the royal family , they make sure the world knows they are part of the royal family.

I looked at the site because I'm nosy out of interest.

Well, we don't have to read all the spiel I suppose.

Alegrias1 Thu 25-Nov-21 17:19:03

Who mentioned leaving the Royal family? I only said that people had decided it wasn't for them.

A bit like Katherine Kent.

Lucca Thu 25-Nov-21 17:42:02

Exactly. It is quite clear to whom you were referring when mentioning misspelling……

Calistemon Thu 25-Nov-21 17:55:20

And mentioning a new book about royal myths could be of interest to royalists too.

Is this about King Arthur?
I think he was Welsh.

Calistemon Thu 25-Nov-21 17:59:09

Being a bit extreme aren't you, Calistemon?

I've never been called extreme before. How thrilling!
Compared to some on here, I'm normally so middle-of-the-road.

Quite exciting!
???

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Nov-21 18:03:29

We won’t know until Grany gives us her usual helpful link to where we can buy it. I so hope it’s out in time for Christmas, I’m in need of inspiration…

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 25-Nov-21 18:06:00

My daughter in law is half Welsh, so if it were to mention King Arthur she would be thrilled.

Anniebach Thu 25-Nov-21 18:09:23

King Arthur was Welsh, ???????

Bluebellwould Thu 25-Nov-21 18:15:16

None of this matters as we are all living in a locker at Grand Central Terminal ?

Anniebach Thu 25-Nov-21 18:15:46

Do read The Mabinogion, I had too ! King Arthur was buried on Bardsey Island , Llyn Peninsula.

Calistemon Thu 25-Nov-21 20:06:27

We could start a right Royal row about King Arthur, Anniebach!!
?

I've been to Tintagel ......

maddyone Thu 25-Nov-21 21:44:57

I know very little about King Arthur, was it him who burnt the cakes? Or was that Albert? I’m really not very good at history. I know a bit more about the last century, if that’s helpful.

Josianne Thu 25-Nov-21 21:48:06

Alfred?

maddyone Thu 25-Nov-21 21:49:29

You could very well be right Josianne.

maddyone Thu 25-Nov-21 21:51:30

I’ve occasionally burnt cakes myself, but I don’t suppose it’ll go down in history. It’s probably best forgotten anyway.

paddyann54 Thu 25-Nov-21 21:54:40

There is a school of thought that Camelon near Falkirk was Camelot and Arthur roamed the land from Stirling to the west coast .Some nice wee stories about him and the area you can find online .

Anniebach Thu 25-Nov-21 22:00:44

King Arthur , Camelot, Merlin, Gwenhwyfar / Guinevere
maddy ?
