who would you like to replace him - from either side?

Or is he the best of a bad bunch?

Alegrias1 Sun 12-Dec-21 14:16:36

Forsythia

Gove may be dislikable to some as a person but if he is competent and serious as a politician then that is what is needed in these unprecedented times.

I've seen no evidence that he is either competent or serious.

If we did elect Sir Keith - how would he get us through this Covid disaster? No one seems to know what to do for the best. Might as well stick with Boris.

I'm inclined to think that most people would trust Sir 'Keith' to at least tell the truth and take the job seriously.

Forsythia Sun 12-Dec-21 14:17:32

And I have seen no evidence that he isn’t.

Forsythia Sun 12-Dec-21 14:18:24

It’s not Sir ‘Keith’ that is the problem. It’s those who come with him.

And who might they be? Yvette Cooper, Wes Streeting et Al. Crikey, we don’t want people like that in government, do we confused?

I agree with you, we certainly don’t.

I don't want to get sued so won't repeat it, but Gove is well known for his recreational activities. Have I Got News For You seemed to be aware of this given their comment about Gove in this week's episode.

Or spend 5 minutes on Twitter

If it has to be a Conservative I would name Jesse Norman - a good constituency MP and has put his career on the line at times in his voting. However I believe he did vote Boris in.

He wrote a book called "Carting Conservatism" in which he harks back to what he sees as the real spirit of the party that has been corrupted. I think he somewhat naive on this score, in spite of his erudition. However, he does have a discernible sliver of integrity.

If it has to be a Tory then please please God do not let it be Gove.

On the Labour side, Jess Phillips might fit the bill.

Luckygirl3 Sun 12-Dec-21 15:15:05

Caring - not carting!!!!

Andy Burnham (our Mayor here in Greater Manchester) isn’t an MP. He stood down in the GE in 2017.

I know. But he would, IMO, make a good PM, and the question was 'who would we like to replace Johnson', not 'who is likely to replace him'.

Alegrias1 Sun 12-Dec-21 15:21:53

I suggested Tyrion Lannister so Andy Burnham seems a much more viable suggestion.

Lucca Sun 12-Dec-21 15:31:47

As opposed to the current delightful front bench ?

Lucca Sun 12-Dec-21 15:33:05

Sorry that was to Maybee 14.24

Visgir1 Sun 12-Dec-21 16:21:29

Wishful thinking who you would like. But it's the MP's and the Tory party members who make the decision. Any change will happen before next election so 18 months time if it happens?
I reckon complete outsider, not any of the normal suspects.

Good Lord, Maybee!

Forsythia has taken you seriously...

Hetty58 Sun 12-Dec-21 17:23:44

Luckygirl3, I preferred 'Carting', as 'caring' and 'conservative' don't belong in the same phrase, do they?

Jane71 Sun 12-Dec-21 17:31:49

Can't stand the Tories, so can't bring myself to propose a replacement Conservative PM.
Andy Burnham would get my vote, but not sure whether he could be tempted back into national politics.
I like and respect Jess Phillips a lot, but don't think she's PM material. It's about time the Labour party had a woman leader though, and yes I know about people like Margaret Becket, but she was just in a holding position.
Shame Caroline Lucas isn't in the Labour party.

sodapop Sun 12-Dec-21 17:32:31

Doesn't seem to be anyone standing head and shoulders above the rest does there. Especially not Gove. I agree with Visgirl an outsider none of the usual suspects.

EllanVannin Sun 12-Dec-21 18:25:48

As a speaker I like the forthright Angela Rayner and would have liked to have seen her leading the Labour party. If she was ever chosen you'd see an increase in voters.

MayBee70 Sun 12-Dec-21 18:35:05

I can’t help but feel that many people still think that being PM is about charisma and not decency and competence. Strangely enough, I saw a poll that said if the electorate could have an ex PM as leader now would vote for Gordon Brown who, if I remember right people thought if as being a bit boring.

humptydumpty Sun 12-Dec-21 18:35:39

EV I have to respectfully completely disagree with you - can't stand Angela Rayner, loud and talks over interviewers (and I'm a labour supporter)

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 12-Dec-21 18:43:05

I imagine Gove is still coming to terms with his new lifestyle, but would be awful anyway. Liz Truss is trying to emulate Mrs Thatcher by being photographed in a tank, so Mr Hunt it is then. Mr Sunak, as I’ve said before, is far too short. Not that I’m shortist.

Jodieb Sun 12-Dec-21 18:52:03

Graham Brady. Big, strong and comes across as reliable.
