who would you like to replace him - from either side?

Or is he the best of a bad bunch?

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Dec-21 10:48:45

gill that sounds brilliant.

Caleo Mon 13-Dec-21 11:00:57

It would be nice if Sir Keir Starmer were to cross the Floor for the sake of the country.

MollyF Mon 13-Dec-21 11:06:50

But I like Boris! The media, particularly the BBC, have been doing a hatchet job on him ever since he took office.

Johnson's damage is largely a function of his upbringing, through the highly charged abandonment to prep school then Eton. I hope that the conservative party picks someone who has escaped this awfulness, and so might have a saner worldview...

Alegrias1 Mon 13-Dec-21 11:10:19

Caleo - if the leader of the opposition was to cross the floor then we would be living in a parallel universe.

MollyF - I like Pete Wishart but I wouldn't want him running the country.

Just remind me again how many times he has stood for election to the House of Commons and lost? 5,6 or is it 7?

Nigel Farage…I loved Maggie. Didn’t always agree with her ideas but she absolutely did what she thought was in the country’s best interest and wasn’t playing politics to make herself popular!!! She stuck with her principles and was a strong leader. She’d have eaten this pathetic EU crowd! And we were respected internationally when she was around (whether you liked her or not) Don’t agree with all Nigel says but I do think he believed he was doing the best for us. There, that’s opened up a can of worms….

coastalgran Mon 13-Dec-21 11:20:29

Not sure if I want dishy Rishi replacing Boris, at least politics isn't grey and boring anymore in the UK. US politics always seemed more interesting than us before Boris came along. Now it's illegal NO 10 parties, 7 children, wife No 3, losing his lines, backhanders for pals, the list is endless and colourful, who cares if he can actually run the country.

Pepper59 Mon 13-Dec-21 11:20:34

OP, you ask a very valid question. At the moment I cannot think of anyone to replace him. I do not know enough about Keir Starmer to comment and where are the Liberal Democrats? I cannot remember the last time I saw their leader anywhere. Ive seen more of their Scottish leader.

“Doodledog

Luckygirl3
Patel! - [head in hands icon here]
Well, quite. But I remember a while ago jokingly saying that we might get a tripe whammy of Trump, Brexit and Johnson as PM. I genuinely thought that all three needed people's votes, so common sense would prevail, but look what happened.”

Ironically, my husband and I had the same “joke” Cringe !! grin

Jess20 Mon 13-Dec-21 11:23:32

Keir would be my choice as he's an intelligent speaker and I believe he has integrity. Not looking for some great charismatic charmer, just thoughtful and intelligent leadership which has the interests of the majority of the country at heart - not just big business cronies or popularists.

sandelf Mon 13-Dec-21 11:24:09

Well I thought Theresa was good but nobody else seemed to see it. And honestly (odd word to use in this context) I don't think he's too bad (we knew what we were getting) - anyone would have been knocked sideways by 'events, dear boy' over these years.

I am happy to join in with the philosophy of this very interesting thread where posters recognise politician's strengths irrespective of their political party, but I draw the line at anyone thinking Farage is a contender, really???? Couldn't get into parliament, even standing in Thanet which was a very strong Brexit constituency, has stood 7 times I think?

Really? Who's that?

Because we don't see much of him up here.

Lesley60 Mon 13-Dec-21 11:31:55

I know Andy Burnham is Labour and not even an MP but I would love him to be PM

Pippa22 Mon 13-Dec-21 11:35:03

All Richi has done so far is hand out money which is pretty easy. I wonder how he will behave when he has to get really tough and start clawing it
back with much higher taxes etc .

winterwhite Mon 13-Dec-21 11:38:00

Out of the likely contenders I rank Hunt well ahead of Gove, Sunak or Truss. The sheer idiocy of getting rid of Grieve, Gauke and Stuart is a huge blot on BJ's record.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 13-Dec-21 11:38:01

Sunak won’t introduce higher tax. But he will introduce further cuts and austerity. Which in return will suppress the economy.

Grantanow Mon 13-Dec-21 11:38:27

I think if there is a Tory leadership ballot then the Tory MPs have a choice of Truss, Patel, Gove, Sunak and ANO but the Tory grassroots then choose between the top two in the Tory MP's ballot. That suggests to me they would choose an anti-immigration/low tax candidate. If it were a General Election and Labour won (doubtful) I'd prefer Hilary Benn, David Lammy or Keir Starmer as PM but I won't get that choice! All in all, I think Boris will soldier on and - given the elapse of time by the next GE - may well deliver a Tory victory because the electorate will be so glad to be out of Covid (if we are) they will vote for the proverbial donkey: as a famous Chinese premier said, ' I don't care of the cat is black or white so long as it catches mice.'

Dinahmo Mon 13-Dec-21 11:42:20

Pippa22 He's already started clawing back money with the iniquitous increase in NIC - aimed just at those in employed.

Tell you what, you can have any of our shower. Daniel the Dictator Andrews locally or a Missing in Action PM. Take your pick.
