God help us! She’s very good at the photo opportunity but there doesn’t seem to be much between the ears

Thank you, GG13

So you have no arguments or disagreements about Brexit with your friends because you don't talk about it.

But here on this forum we are not talking to a mixed group of friends. We're not down the pub having a natter. We're talking, in some cases very seriously, about the effects of Brexit. Which makes for arguments and disagreements.

It would be naive to expect it to be nonstop sweetness and light.

I shall meet several people who voted for Brexit and intially backed Johnson. I won't talk about it, and if they do, I will deflect, and even walk away if 'goaded', as might happen with one of them. I know the others have all changed their mind, and have reached out to us and said hos disappointed they feel with Johnson, ashamed even- and have also come to realise they were lied to and taken in by the promises - and went with it all to protect their large assets.

I will not get into any arguments- what would it achieve in a family setting?

I find it strange that people say they normally don't discuss politics with family/friends. Really? Surely it is Brexit that has changed what we discuss. It has become the elephant in the room. In the groups of people I meet (not family) it is no longer broached; yet during the referendum it was. What has changed is that many leave voters find the topic very uncomfortable, therefore it is better avoided. Nobody wants to create a strained atmosphere.

I was only thinking of that yesterday. For years I’ve had friends for various reasons: some because of shared sporting interests, parents of my childrens school friends, work colleagues etc etc. But it is only since brexit that politics has been discussed within the framework of those friendships (the exception obviously being political friends). I distanced myself from one of my oldest friends because her husband was an arch brexiter, very vocal about it and ( this is the important bit) had always been a bit racist. Because of the pandemic we hadn’t met each other anyway, but I’ve just heard that she has Alzheimer’s and I’m in shock about it. But also, on other forums, politics is mentioned more than it used to be and, on top of that people have become almost tribal in their views on covid restrictions/vaccines etc. Divide and rule seems to be working well I’m afraid.

Not a strange memory a very good one. In fact the poster also told us that she had stopped talking to family in America because they ( the relatives) had voted for Trump.
Can you believe it, cancelling your own family for the way they vote ?

Kali2 Thu 23-Dec-21 21:32:16

I remember that one- that poster said she had stopped talking to relatives in the USA because of the extreme racism they expressed when Obama was elected, and confirmed in strong terms during the Trump campaign.

This article from the BBC above just happened to turn up on my page today- and I felt it confirmed things I have read recently about younger people finding it VERY difficult, and at times impossible, to continue the conversation. I couldn't do that- but I can understand it.

I believe it. We have a poster on this thread, who, in a previous life told us she wouldn’t mix with anyone who voted for Brexit.

Yep I remember them and the post very well.

Ah yes! That poster.?
GG13 GN political Brexit threads are as Groundhog Day?

So we both have a strange memory
But obviously talking about the same person. Strange, isn’t it.

Perfect! Just the right size to slip into my handbag to have with my lunch on the beach. Six glasses was always a bit too much for me. Hic hic.

It won’t be champagne though???
