Before I head off into our garden for BBQ with DD & GC I have a serious question for the political experts here.

As I have turned away from Mr. Johnson and the current Conservative Government am I now a Champagne Socialist ?

Baggs Sat 14-May-22 21:30:49

UC?

Sorry, been out for the day with work colleagues and am now pretty brain dead (tired). It was LOVELY in Oban. So normal. I heard several foreign languages, it was busy and the weather was FAB. So good to see Scotland open again.

Baggs Sat 14-May-22 21:31:07

Universal credit?

Baggs Sat 14-May-22 21:31:43

Yeah, well, anyway. Universal safety net – absoultely.

Mamie Sun 15-May-22 08:03:09

That is interesting Baggs. I have always thought of you as a libertarian, right from the beginning of Gransnet. ?

Mamie Sun 15-May-22 08:12:19

Don't take that the wrong way. Just an observation based on umpty tiddle years of virtual acquaintanceship. ?

Witzend Sun 15-May-22 08:15:51

I’d call myself a gin and tonic middle-of-the-road. That’s in the summer though - in winter it might well be an Amontillado sherry.

I am partial to Laurent Perrier rose, but for special occasions it has always been Dom Perignon. If out to lunch with girlfriends it can be Prosecco or Cava, some are better than others.

We are trying English sparkling, will look into your recommendation Whitewavemark2

That should be Camel Valley btw. We always have their stuff for special occasions.

Also if you are feeling flush have a look at Chaple Down they have some couer de cuvee that sounds good. I haven’t tried it as it is expensive but if it is ok be nice for a very special occasion.
Kent vineyard I think.

Have you had a bottle of sparkling rosé already ???

Cheers ?

I should only do one thing at a time, gg. And remember to flipping proof read.

And I agree with your last post.

Perhaps the Don was more interesting than the drink smile

Maybe!?

So my ideal government is

One presiding over a capitalist economy

One that supports a strong democracy.

One that is strong enough to control the exploitation of resources by this system, which is inevitable in the pursuit of profit, underpinned by a rule of law.

One that provides a rule of law, with an independent judiciary, to which the entire population have access

One that provides a safety net for all the casualties that inevitably arise from the economic system in its normal pattern of peaks and troughs, or for health reasons.

A fair tax system used to generate a society that does not have extremes of inequality.

A government that recognises the right of access to a good available to all health system.

The right to a good tertiary education in all its forms.

The right to housing

That’s a start. ?

WWM2- spot on ! And your wine choice is good, too - Chapel Down is an award winning Kent vineyard.

nanna8 Sun 15-May-22 09:29:32

Durif for me. Especially as we head into Winter here.

nanna8 Sun 15-May-22 09:31:30

I must be mad- I have just agreed to hand out how to vote cards at our election on Sat. Helping a friend out but I’ll be voting a different way to the ones I will be handing out.

Sorry Grany I may have abandoned Mr.Johnson but aligning myself with Mr,Corbyn is just one enormous step too far.

That is interesting too, mamie. I'm afraid I can't return the favour with a political assessment of you! ?

You should be loving our current government then...

I am really shocked that people forget about mixed economies.

Witzend Sun 15-May-22 10:37:20

Sorry, a bit off topic, but it’s surely discriminatory that there’s no emoji suitable for a G&T, while so many other tastes are catered for?
Who do I complain to? ?

You then don’t give consideration to my third sentence?

I’ve just read the article by Corbyn, well skim read it tbh.

It seems that he is arguing for a world wide socialist economy.

I wonder how he intends to achieve that?

Just to expand on what I mean.

My theory is that everything flows from the economic order.

I may not necessarily think it is the ideal, but I think that at present our present level of political maturity only works with a capitalist system.

I recognise that of its nature the capitalist economic system is one of exploitation. Exploitation being used in an objective sense. I also argue that business does not necessarily exploit resources for the common good, like air and soil quality and other such.

Because of this I think we need a strong democratic state, that uses the rule of law to control this exploitation of resources.

So this included resources such as labour, and raw materials, but also air quality, soil quality, etc.

Control may therefore take the form of state managed resources. This can be achieved both by the rule of law e.g. prevention of further carbon exploitation, or by nationalisation, like water - (I think that there is a strong argument for this) or other resources.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "New Economic Order". If you look back in history, the more extreme you get, the more you bump into the other lot of extremists coming in the opposite direction.

I think there is a rebalancing of the current "order", though.
