Starving in Africa

Apparently the U.K. is not going to send any more money anywhere to the poorest people in the world.

The need has never been greater.

I thought the UK had set a certain percentage of money to be used for aid every year. Am I wrong?

The Conservative government reduced it I believe. Even Conservative MP’s were horrified by it and some voted against it I think. They certainly spoke out against it in parliament.

MayBee70 Wed 27-Jul-22 17:09:10

Andrew Mitchell might have been one of them.

Virtual signalling on Gransnet me thinks makes some feel good about themselves I suppose. What are you doing personally for the starving in Africa?

MayBee70 Wed 27-Jul-22 17:10:47

It was Andrew Mitchell. I’ve just checked my emails. I think he used to work with Jo Cox and was very upset by the reduction in aid.

I see the spirit of Live Aid is well and truly dead and buried….

Aid isn't about the starving in Africa.

Which you would know if you took the tiniest moment to find out about it. But you won't, will you?

Maudi Wed 27-Jul-22 17:13:16

Yes all those upset about the starving in Africa on GN what are you doing about it or are you just giving it word service? Or getting a few digs in about other posters who don't agree with you probably.

volver Wed 27-Jul-22 17:14:34

Its not about the starving in Africa.

Maudi Wed 27-Jul-22 17:16:46

Well that's what the thread is called. Well what are GN posters who are upset about the money being stopped doing?

volver Wed 27-Jul-22 17:18:15

READ THE LINK. ??‍♀️

Maudi Wed 27-Jul-22 17:22:57

No thanks. I'm pleased they are cutting the aid.

Smileless2012 Wed 27-Jul-22 17:24:03

Then the thread title should be changed volver and perhaps the OP should have contained more information.

volver Wed 27-Jul-22 17:24:07

Like I said....don't confuse people with facts when they have already made up their minds.

Galaxy Wed 27-Jul-22 17:24:58

I know volver is desperately trying to give the facts but can I also say there is something pointless about asking people what they may personally be doing. Does this apply to all subjects? Am I allowed to express a view on domestic violence if I dont volunteer at a refuge, am I allowed to express a view on child labour if I am personally not storming the factories.

My goodness what an unpleasant comment.

You have no idea what individuals are doing. Neither is it any of your business.

Well the OP can read the link too. And we can all learn something.

As far as I recall WWM2 isn't at all averse to actually basing her opinions on reality. Unlike some.

maddyone Wed 27-Jul-22 17:25:59

Thanks for the information Maybee.

BlueBelle Wed 27-Jul-22 17:26:06

I could tell you Maudi …..but I know I ve done one hell of a lot more than you including one of my children VOLUNTEERING there for a year Don’t judge what you don’t know
Anyway anyone who thinks we shouldn’t help others worse of than ourselves needs a heart transplant

Jaberwok Wed 27-Jul-22 17:27:35

Not a word of criticism about the dictator governments who steal aid from their own people leave them starving and destitute. Robert Mugabe anyone? Yes I know he's dead,at last, thank goodness, but his successor isn't much better despite the promises. If governments had spent aid wisely and fairly, these countries would be thriving after all these years, but corruption and terror makes sure that the poor stay poor and true democracy is a distant dream for most of the population.. Isn't the name of this thread Starving Africa? so why the accusations of misunderstanding?

Its not about the starving in Africa.

Well, to be fair, that's what the thread title is 'Starving in Africa'.

Just don't expect open minds from some posters..

Whitewavemark2 Wed 27-Jul-22 17:29:26

Right I’ve just come back into this.

Rory Stewart said on his podcast that the U.K. government has decided to cut all foreign aid, because they are “helping” Ukraine

He also said that it was an outrageous thing to as Africa is in a worse state than the past 40 years. Think drought etc. They are being devastatingly hit as a result of our carbon emissions. Not theirs - ours.

You are virtual signaling again, you know nothing about me or my lovely family, perhaps you should watch what you say about other posters.

Open minds or coherent thought.

Maudi Wed 27-Jul-22 17:33:11

I think Ukraine are in greater need than Africa at this present time.
