I think this is about much wider issues than whether Scotland stays in the UK actually, I think it is one of a number of signals of the way Truss views people and countries who don’t share her vision. Hence the stupid statements about taking on Putin, the EU, etc. etc. We are in for a very rocky ride.

Yes, the Scottish referendum is a red herring in this debate.

As I said, I find the prospect quite frightening. I hope she will have advisers who manage to rein her in if she becomes PM.

They absolutely HATE being part of the UK & want independence ASAP.

Robin49 and Kandinsky - we will go, just as soon as possible, and many would appreciate any assistance you can provide in that respect.
And as far as I am aware, "being free of England" and becoming a member of the EU are two separate issues - you seem to have rolled these together.

I am neither particularly a SNP or NS lover but will vote for whichever party appears to have the best interests of Scotland at its heart.

To have someone in the running for PM who cannot show basic respect in public for the First Minister is completely wrong. People in these positions shouldn't need to be told how to behave.

And as a nation we usually get along quite well with our neighbours so its relatively unusual to be hearing that some of our neighbours want to push us collectively into the North Sea. Although I can see that others would like the border to be brought further south. Best watch out - if that happened, we might then be able to push some of England into the channel !

The local pay for public service workers and the £10 fine idea are just on the hoof, unworkable, ill thought previously rejected policies, where both candidates are trying to outdo each other in the race to the bottom.
We are stuck with this stupidity for the next two years sadly.
I can remember the fines for missed appointments brainwave and it is clearly impractical and if ever carried out would be the start of paying for some free services - thin end of the wedge. I know my GPs wouldn’t mind a few missed appointments, they have too many per hour as it is and always over run.

Hospitals and GP surgeries show quite a high percentage of no-shows. Yes, the people who are waiting will get a quicker turn. Though the appointment could have been given to someone else, not on the day but by notification in the usual way.

It would be more to the point if Sunak acknowledged that the NHS is at crisis point, underfunded, understaffed and overloaded with work.

Missed appointments aren't necessarily the fault of the patient. There are plenty of stories here on Gnet of appointments missed because of letters that didn't arrive until after the date or that went to completely the wrong address. And people turning up for appointments only to find they've been cancelled. It's all symptomatic of a service being run on a shoestring with out of date IT and overworked staff.

But that's what the tories want because it's an excuse for privatistion.

There have been lots of no-shows here because the texts, emails and letters went out after the appointment time.
So should a patient be given £10 because their appointment was delayed as a consequence?

We did go through all this a day or two ago, when it was volver who used the taboo word. One or two people did object on the thread, which was fair enough, but it was reported and deleted all the same.

Any idea why they don't show?

Maybe because their appointment letter arrived too late, or not at all?
Or their bus, on which they depend, didn't show up?
Or they were given their appointment so long ago that they have forgotten it? (My hospital check up appointments are given a year in advance, BTW)
Or they have cognitive impairment and didn't even know they had an appointment?
Or they are scared?
Or their car broke down?

Or are they all just missing them on purpose because they don't care? There needs to be an understanding of why people are missing appointments, not instant sanctioning.
