Shall we have a thread about it?

It will be interesting (I hope)

Farzanah Wed 07-Sept-22 13:42:33

I agree about The Speaker HPQ.

MaizieD Wed 07-Sept-22 14:03:08

I was a bit startled when she told the person from a modest background, who, through his own efforts, became a top barrister and Director of Public Prosecutions, that his party wasn't a party of 'aspiration.'

Nothing like trotting out a tired old cliche...

FannyCornforth Wed 07-Sept-22 14:03:42

And I agree with everything that you just said Farzanah
This is all going terribly well, isn’t it? smile

Starmer charismatic ??? Never!

I didn't say he was, charismatic. Just that she made him look it in comparison with her.

Callistemon21 Wed 07-Sept-22 14:05:39

I'm off out, what a shame ?

I look forward to catching up with this thread when I come home.

I think Hoyle is a dreadful Speaker, and always has been.

Ian Dunt of the Independent has just made a similar point about the gulf between how Truss talks (bland) and the policies she is talking about, which are anything but.

I’m picking up the dropped aitches…….

Although he may have been making allowances for the excitement of the new term and the new leader, I thought that The Speaker was very poor in controlling the noise, especially when anyone non Tory was speaking. There is always a fair bit of racket, but today Starmer sat down at least once, looked to Hoyle for guidance and had to stand up and continue during the baying. As for Cleverley, what an idiot he looked with his jeering and hand gestures. Truss did speak better than I expected, but that's all she did; speak. She didn't really say anything.

Yet again Speaker only came down heavy on the opposition even though the government benches were as noisy as ever. So nothing has changed there then. I must admit that I found Truss quite competent.

I have just listened to PMQs and I am pleasantly surprised because she sounded quite grown up. Still, she speaks as if her government is taking over from years of incompetency ....oh wait, it is. I hope she has a well developed sense of irony.

I’m wondering if Therese Coffey , who apparently likes a drink and a smoke and is overweight is the best person for health minister….

Barmeyoldbat Wed 07-Sept-22 16:53:03

I found she spoke quite well but then I am comparing her with Johnson

Wasn’t Ken Clarke Health minister (1988-1990) I do not recall anyone objecting to his waistline, drinking or cigar smoking.

Obviously not but her physical characteristics and her personal habits make not a jot of difference to her ability to get the job done

MrsKen33 Wed 07-Sept-22 18:06:15

It’s the slightly manic Truss smile that gets to me.?

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Sept-22 18:07:53

Just heard Penny Mordaunt speaking. So much more authority and confidence in her voice.

This is just my personal opinion but, for the NHS to survive more needs to be done to make people more aware of the need to be responsible for their own health via eating healthily, not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight etc. I don’t see how that can possibly be achieved if the person in charge of the nations health disregards all of those things.

Farzanah Wed 07-Sept-22 18:30:12

Yes I agree GSD think she’d have made a better PM.

Farzanah Wed 07-Sept-22 18:32:25

Sorry didn’t mean to call you a dog. Slip of the finger?

Barmeyoldbat Wed 07-Sept-22 18:38:57

Maybe I agree, she really needs to set an example not do as I do but as I say springs to mind

Zonne Wed 07-Sept-22 18:39:50

I am genuinely not bothered about Coffey’a looks. I am bothered that she has, according to my husband, said she will be good at her role, as she ‘pays attention to detail, and already knows the bulk of NHS work is done by GPS, dentists, and chiropractors’ (my bold).

I would laugh, if it wasn’t so important to get a competent person in charge of both health and social care.

I agree MayBee70, you don’t see overweight, smoker Public Health spokespeople, that’s because in very senior roles in Health they are expected to set an example so the health messages they provide are seen to be regarded, and generally they do practice what they preach. I’ve been racking my brains, I can’t think of an overweight smoker since Ken Clarke, and he was there over 30 years ago.
